MultiVersus returned in 2024 as a free-to-play Warner Bros. platform fighter built around 2v2 teamwork, a broad roster and cross-platform play. A contemporary PS5 review found its combat responsive and its characters distinct, but also noted grindy progression and confusing menus. The biggest qualification today is that online service ended on May 30, 2025: continued offline play was reported to require a final update and a local save created before shutdown.
What was MultiVersus?
MultiVersus is a platform fighter that brings together characters from Warner Bros. properties. The game relaunched globally as a free-to-play title on May 28, 2024, for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store. Warner Bros. Games announced cross-play and cross-progression at launch. Warner Bros. Games’ launch announcement also listed 2v2, 1v1, four-player free-for-all and co-op options.
Its distinguishing idea was to make teamwork central rather than treating two-on-two as a side mode. Characters have individual moves and mechanics that can help a partner, giving team composition and coordination a meaningful role. Players could also choose one-on-one matches, local multiplayer or the solo Rifts mode.
How good was the 2024 relaunch?
In a review of the PS5 version published June 4, 2024, Stephen Tailby of Push Square described the return as “MultiVersus is back and in a much better place.” He praised its satisfying, responsive combat, varied roster, distinctive character kits, rollback netcode and Rifts solo content. Push Square scored the game 8/10. These are the outlet’s assessments of the May 2024 build, not a claim about the game’s current online state. Read Push Square’s review.
The combat and roster
The review’s strongest case for the game is how its characters feel different and how their abilities can contribute to a teammate’s success. That makes MultiVersus a natural fit for players who enjoy learning character-specific tools and coordinating in pairs. Its other announced match formats offered alternatives, but the 2v2 emphasis is the clearest expression of its design.
Solo play and progression
Rifts gave players a solo activity alongside competitive-style matches. The review welcomed that mode, but criticized Battle Pass progression as grindy. It also found the menus confusing and the presentation rough around the edges. Taken together, the assessment is of a compelling fighting core with friction around the experience built around it.

Is MultiVersus still playable?
Not online. GameSpot reported that Season 5 was the final content update and that online features ended May 30, 2025, at 9 a.m. PT; the game was also delisted from digital storefronts. That date has passed, so availability should not be assumed for someone trying to obtain or access the game now. GameSpot’s shutdown report describes the announced closure and remaining local-play conditions.
Can you play MultiVersus offline?
GameSpot reported that players who downloaded the Season 5 update and logged in before shutdown could create a local save for continued play. After the online service closed, the reported local options were solo matches against AI or local play with up to three other people. The report does not establish that a new player can now download the game, create the required save, or recover access if those preparations were missed.

The cited shutdown reporting establishes the final season, the online-service end date and the delisting, but does not establish a definitive reason for Warner Bros. Games’ decision. It would be speculation to attribute the closure to a particular cause based on these facts alone.

Judged as the 2024 relaunch, MultiVersus offered a persuasive team-fighting concept, responsive combat, distinct characters and a welcome solo mode. Its progression and interface could be frustrating, and its online-first format now has a decisive limitation: the service is over. The 8/10 PS5 score captures the contemporary review, not a recommendation that online matches remain available today.
