Cannot read MMDxShow->dll and There is no MMDxShow->dll in data folder are MikuMikuDance errors. If Windows reports that mmdxshow.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair the MikuMikuDance installation before touching any Windows system folder.
Which fix applies to you
Use this decision list before changing anything:
- The file is absent from MikuMikuDance’s
Datafolder: replace the complete MMD installation. - The file exists, but MMD cannot read it: check whether you installed the correct 32-bit or x64 edition, then check blocking and antivirus quarantine.
- MMD starts, but AVI export fails: install the legacy Visual C++ and DirectX components required by your MMD edition, then test codecs and plugins.
- Only one project fails: test a new scene. The problem may be the project, model, plugin, or video output configuration.
- Several unrelated programs fail: repair Windows components with DISM and SFC.
- You found a standalone DLL download: do not use it as the first fix. A random copy may be malicious, incompatible, or built for the wrong architecture.
mmdxshow.dll is associated with MikuMikuDance, not with Windows. It should normally be inside the MikuMikuDance installation’s Data folder, not in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
1. Check the MikuMikuDance folder first
Close MikuMikuDance and any launcher or video encoder associated with it.
- Open the folder where MikuMikuDance was extracted.
- Look for the program’s
Datafolder. - Confirm that the path resembles:
C:MikuMikuDanceDatammdxshow.dll
The exact parent folder can differ. The important point is that mmdxshow.dll belongs under the MMD installation’s own Data directory.

If the Data folder is missing, nearly empty, or contains only part of the expected files, the archive was probably extracted incompletely. Do not copy a DLL into a Windows directory to compensate.
Rebuild the complete MMD folder
- Preserve your
UserFilefolder, models, motions, accessories, and project files. - Obtain the matching MikuMikuDance package from its original distribution.
- Create a new local folder such as:
C:MikuMikuDance
- Extract the entire archive into that folder.
- Open the new
Datafolder and confirm thatmmdxshow.dllis present. - Start the executable from the new installation.
- Open a new scene before testing an old project.
A complete re-extraction is safer than replacing one DLL. It restores the files that may load alongside mmdxshow.dll, preserves the intended folder layout, and avoids mixing files from different MMD releases.
If MMD opens and a new scene works, restore your projects and custom resources gradually. If the error returns after copying one plugin or codec, that addition is a stronger suspect than the base MMD installation.
2. Match the MMD executable and DLL architecture
MikuMikuDance is distributed in standard 32-bit and x64 editions. The executable and its DLLs must belong to the same architecture.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows, but a 64-bit executable cannot load a 32-bit DLL. A file can therefore exist in the correct Data folder and still produce a load error.
Check the package and executable you are using:
- Open the MikuMikuDance installation folder.
- Identify whether you launched the standard executable or the one marked
x64. - Do not combine the standard package with files from the x64 package.
- If uncertain, extract a fresh complete package rather than replacing only
mmdxshow.dll. - Launch the executable included with that package.
Do not attempt to solve an architecture mismatch by renaming files or copying a DLL from another MMD installation. The matching package is the correct repair.

3. Install the legacy runtimes required by MMD
Older applications may require older side-by-side runtime components even when newer Visual C++ packages are already installed. Installing the newest package alone does not necessarily provide the libraries expected by an older MMD build.
For the x64 MMD edition, the official MMD requirements identify these supporting packages:
- Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 x64
- Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 x64
- DirectX End-User Runtime
Use Microsoft-hosted downloads:
- Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable security update
- Visual C++ 2010 package reference
- DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer
Install Visual C++ packages
- Open the Microsoft download page.
- Verify that the package matches your MMD architecture.
- Download the required installer.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Choose Repair if the installer reports that the runtime is already installed. Otherwise choose Install.
- Restart Windows.
- Start MMD and test a new scene.
The 32-bit MMD edition may require the x86 Visual C++ runtime rather than x64. Follow the architecture required by the application, not only the architecture of Windows.
Install the legacy DirectX components
- Download the DirectX End-User Runtime from Microsoft.
- Run the downloaded installer as administrator.
- Accept the license and allow the installer to complete.
- Restart Windows.
- Test MMD again, including the AVI output path if that is where the error appears.
The legacy DirectX package supplies older components used by some applications. It does not replace the core DirectX version built into Windows.
If an archive contains a DirectX setup program, extracting the files is not the same as installing them. Run DXSETUP.exe when that is the installer provided by the package.
4. Unblock the archive or DLL
Windows can mark files downloaded from the internet with an attachment flag. This is a community-reported cause of loading problems, not a guaranteed explanation for every MMD error.

Check the archive first:
- Right-click the downloaded MMD archive.
- Select Properties.
- On the General tab, look for an Unblock checkbox or button.
- Select Unblock, choose Apply, and select OK.
- Extract the archive again into a new folder.
If the archive was already extracted, check the file:
- Right-click
mmdxshow.dll. - Select Properties.
- Select Unblock if the option appears.
- Choose Apply, then OK.
- Start MMD again.
If no unblock option appears, continue with the clean extraction and runtime checks rather than changing Windows security settings broadly.
5. Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine a file, block its loading, or flag an incomplete or altered copy. Do not automatically assume a detection is false.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the MikuMikuDance folder or
mmdxshow.dll. - Verify that the file came from the original MMD distribution.
- If its source is uncertain, remove the installation and extract a fresh copy instead of restoring the file.
- If the copy is demonstrably legitimate, use the available restore or allow option, then test MMD.
Do not disable antivirus protection permanently. If the same original package is repeatedly quarantined, scan it and verify its source before creating an exception.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems6. Separate an AVI-export problem from a missing DLL
Reports commonly associate mmdxshow.dll errors with AVI rendering or video export. If MMD opens normally but fails only when exporting, the DLL may not be the only component involved.
Use this isolation test:
- Start MikuMikuDance.
- Create a new, empty scene.
- Use the default camera and a simple test animation.
- Try the same output operation.
- If it works, open the original project.
- Disable third-party plugins and repeat the export.
- Test a different output folder and filename.
- If available, test another output mode or codec.
If only one project fails, investigate its model, motion, accessory, plugin, or codec. If every project fails at the same export stage, revisit the MMD package, runtime installation, and video-output dependencies.

7. Repair Windows components only when other apps are affected
mmdxshow.dll is not a protected Windows component. SFC normally will not recreate it. Use Windows repair commands when other applications also show unexplained startup failures or Windows itself appears corrupted.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows.
Run SFC
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows and test MMD.
Success means DISM or SFC reports that component repair completed, but that does not prove mmdxshow.dll was restored. If MMD still reports the file, rebuild the MikuMikuDance installation.
If you repeatedly hunt through repair logs and rerun SFC or DISM without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show what it finds; its full version performs the repair. It is optional, and reinstalling MikuMikuDance remains the definitive fix for this application file.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Check drivers only for broader graphics or export failures
A driver update is not the normal cure for a missing mmdxshow.dll, but it can matter if MMD also crashes during rendering, DirectX initialization, or video output.
To check graphics drivers manually:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- Test MMD with a new scene.
Do not remove a working driver solely because this DLL is missing. If the driver update introduces problems, return to Device Manager, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver when available.

It is optional, and it will not replace a missing MikuMikuDance package.
Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
Do not run regsvr32 mmdxshow.dll as a generic repair step. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, typically COM or ActiveX components.

There is no verified indication that mmdxshow.dll requires registration. MMD normally loads it from its application directory. Registering it from a system folder can create confusion and does not fix a missing dependency, wrong architecture, incomplete extraction, or blocked file.
What not to do
- Do not copy
mmdxshow.dllintoSystem32. - Do not copy it into
SysWOW64. - Do not scatter it into unrelated application folders.
- Do not mix standard and x64 MMD files.
- Do not trust a file’s reported size, version, or hash from an unverified index.
- Do not replace only one DLL when the MMD archive is incomplete.
- Do not install only the newest Visual C++ runtime and assume old dependencies are covered.
- Do not disable antivirus permanently.
- Do not use a standalone DLL download when a complete official MMD package is available.
FAQ
Is mmdxshow.dll a Microsoft file?
No verified evidence identifies it as a Microsoft Windows component. It is associated with MikuMikuDance and belongs in that application’s Data folder.
Where should mmdxshow.dll be located?
Normally here:
MikuMikuDanceDatammdxshow.dll
The installation may be stored elsewhere, but the DLL should remain inside the MMD folder structure.
Can I download only mmdxshow.dll?
A complete, matching MikuMikuDance package is safer. A standalone file may be malicious, incomplete, the wrong architecture, or incompatible with your MMD build.
Why does the error appear only during AVI export?
MMD may not load the video-output dependency until rendering begins. Codecs, plugins, legacy runtimes, and project contents can also affect export.
Is the x64 version always required on 64-bit Windows?
No. A 32-bit MMD edition can run on 64-bit Windows. The important rule is that the executable and its DLLs must match.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What details should I provide if the repair fails?
Record the exact error text, MMD edition, Windows edition and architecture, the full location of mmdxshow.dll, whether the file is blocked, antivirus history, and whether the failure occurs at startup or only during AVI export.
