What error code 0xc0000005 means—and what it doesn’t
Blizzard Support describes C0000005 as an “Unhandled Exception: Access_Violation (C0000005)” and says, “This is a standard exception error that can be caused by a bad file.” That is a general explanation of the exception, not a diagnosis of a particular Modern Warfare II crash. It does not establish that a game file is damaged or point to any one cause.

Activision’s Modern Warfare II PC troubleshooting guide, dated April 26, 2023, and its general crash and freeze guidance, dated March 5, 2024, offer steps for PC crashes. They do not document a guaranteed, code-specific fix.

Start by recording when the crash happens
Before changing settings, note the exact error text and where the crash occurs. This helps distinguish a launch or shader-preload problem from a crash after entering a match, and gives support useful details if you need to report it.

- Write down whether the crash happens on launch, during shader preloading, in the menu, or during a match.
- Record whether you use Steam or Battle.net, your Windows version, GPU model, and GPU driver version.
- Note any overlays, recording tools, input remappers, or hardware-control utilities running when it happens.
Try these fixes in order
1. Confirm Windows support and minimum requirements
Check that your PC meets the game’s minimum requirements and uses supported Windows 10 or Windows 11. Activision says Modern Warfare II does not support Windows 7 or Windows 8. If your system does not meet the minimum requirements or runs an unsupported Windows version, address that before trying more involved troubleshooting.
2. Let shader preloading finish
Restart the game and allow shader preloading to complete before playing. Activision says, “Shader Preloading is an important part of the first boot process.” Its PC guide warns that leaving the Main Menu interrupts preloading and can lead to performance issues. Stay in the menu until the process finishes, then test the game.

3. Repair the game files in your launcher
Use the repair option for the launcher where you installed the game. Activision points players to these routes:

Let the check complete, then launch the game again. A repair is a sensible file check, but a damaged file is not proven to be the cause just because this error appears.

4. Test without background apps and overlays
For one troubleshooting run, close other applications that could interfere with startup or gameplay. This includes overlays, recording tools, input remappers, and utilities that monitor or control hardware. Activision warns that third-party applications may interfere with Call of Duty gameplay or startup; closing them is a test, not proof that any particular app caused the crash.
Activision specifically names NZXT CAM, MSI Afterburner, and Razer Cortex as potential conflicts. If you use one, close it and test the game before changing or uninstalling other software. If Razer Synapse is installed, Activision’s PC guide also recommends updating it.

5. Check antivirus interference narrowly
Security software can be worth checking if the crash persists. Activision suggests adding the entire Modern Warfare II game folder to your antivirus exception list. Only add the legitimate game installation folder; do not disable antivirus protection broadly. If you are unsure which folder is the real installation, locate it through Steam or Battle.net rather than excluding a wider drive or directory.
6. Update Windows and your graphics driver
Install available Windows updates and check for a current graphics driver directly from your GPU vendor. Activision’s April 2023 PC guide lists particular Nvidia, AMD, and Intel driver versions, but those are historical recommendations—not a reliable statement of the latest drivers in 2026. Do not downgrade to an old version solely because it appears on that dated page.

7. Try a clean boot if the crash continues
A Windows clean boot starts Windows with a reduced set of startup programs and services, which can help test whether background software is involved. Activision recommends this step if the problem persists. Follow Microsoft’s current clean-boot instructions for your Windows version, and record any startup items you disable so you can restore them afterward. If the game works in a clean boot, re-enable items in groups to narrow down the conflict.
8. Check ASLR only if it was disabled
Activision’s PC troubleshooting guide recommends re-enabling ASLR if it was turned off. Do not change unrelated Windows security settings as a speculative fix. If you do not know whether ASLR was disabled, leave the setting alone rather than making broad security changes.

If Modern Warfare II still crashes after these checks, submit an Activision PC Crash Report. Include the launcher, Windows version, GPU and driver version, the stage where the crash occurs, and which troubleshooting steps you tried. Activision’s crash guidance also directs players to report persistent PC crashes.

Blizzard’s general C0000005 guidance mentions driver and operating-system updates, security-software exceptions, closing other applications, disk-permission repair, and reinstalling as possible troubleshooting measures. Those suggestions are not MWII-specific instructions; in particular, the disk-permission advice does not establish a Modern Warfare II fix.
Fixes to avoid
The official sources cited here do not prescribe copying DLL files into the game folder, broadly disabling security protections, editing the registry, or replacing PC hardware for this exact error. Avoid treating those steps—or a hardware purchase—as a confirmed fix without evidence that it addresses your specific problem.
