If Modern Warfare 2 on Xbox shows Sys_Error. Disc read error [8.7]: 'ww_global.ff', the message alone does not prove that a game disc or your console’s optical drive is damaged. Xbox players have reported it while troubleshooting Campaign Pack 1, but their results are mixed and the available reports do not establish a confirmed cause or a current official fix.
What the Xbox error does—and does not—tell you
The error names a file, ww_global.ff, and says “Disc read error.” That wording is not enough to diagnose a physical disc or optical-drive fault: the same message appears in Xbox campaign-pack discussions that include digital content and an Xbox Series S report. The reports point to a possible content-pack installation or registration problem, but they do not prove that explanation.
There is no substantiated incidence rate or verified diagnosis for this specific error. A separate 2023 Xbox discussion about a Building 21 DMZ crash concerned another mode and error context; it does not show that installing every mode pack resolves this campaign issue.
Xbox Campaign Pack 1: a reported step with mixed results
In a Reddit discussion posted in February 2025 about campaign trouble after a Campaign Pack 1 update, players suggested checking the pack through Xbox Store or the console’s game-management interface, then uninstalling and reinstalling it. Some commenters said the process worked; others could not find a Store “Get” option or said reinstalling did not fix the error. These are individual reports, not a confirmed remedy. If your installed content appears incomplete, checking the installed MWII packs and reinstalling the affected campaign pack through Xbox’s own management interface is a reasonable reported troubleshooting step. Use the console’s current menus rather than relying on a specific Store listing: a June 2025 update in the thread said the Store-page method no longer worked in most cases after an Xbox Store update. That update was a user report, not an official public status announcement.
One commenter described an unusually small initial download followed by a larger campaign-pack download after reinstalling. That is a single user’s observation; download size is not a reliable diagnosis, and a missing Store listing does not establish what caused the error.

DMZ retry advice is anecdotal, not a demonstrated error fix
In a May 2025 Microsoft Community discussion about accessing MWII modes through Game Pass, a community advisor suggested installing DMZ, launching it, canceling at the connection screen, and retrying to see whether the MWII mode selection appeared. The questioner later said multiplayer and co-op were accessible but campaign was still missing. This advice was not demonstrated to fix the ww_global.ff error or restore campaign access. Read the Microsoft Community discussion.
Why PC file-verification advice does not translate to Xbox
A November 16, 2022 guide to an older MWII Sys_Error issue mentions verifying or repairing files through Steam or Battle.net. Those are PC-client procedures, not Xbox console instructions, and the guide does not establish that the 2025 Campaign Pack 1 reports share the same cause. Read the dated Touch, Tap, Play guide.

Where to look for current guidance
The reports cited here do not confirm the current official status of this particular campaign-pack error. For up-to-date steps, check Activision Support and Xbox Support. If you contact support, include the full error text, the Xbox model, whether you use a disc or digital access, which MWII modes or packs are installed, and what happened when you tried managing the campaign pack. Those details help distinguish a content-access problem from a disc-specific issue without assuming the message itself identifies the cause.
