That sequence follows the continuity Activision describes: Modern Warfare II is an indirect continuation of the 2019 story, while Modern Warfare III directly follows Modern Warfare II. Start with Modern Warfare III only if its Open Combat Mission format is your overriding interest and you are willing to enter the story at its third chapter.
How the reboot continuity fits together
The 2019 game is the starting point for this modern continuity. It establishes the rebooted setting, its version of Task Force 141, and the conflict that later campaigns expand. Activision’s October 2022 launch overview calls Modern Warfare II an “indirect continuation” of the 2019 story and places its events three years after Task Force 141’s original formation. The August 2023 campaign announcement describes Modern Warfare III as the direct sequel to the events of Modern Warfare II.

That wording matters. “Indirect continuation” means the 2022 campaign advances the same reboot timeline without being presented as a scene-by-scene handoff from the 2019 ending. “Direct sequel” gives the 2023 campaign a tighter dependency on what happens in its immediate predecessor. For a first-time player, chronological release order therefore provides the clearest introduction and the least risk of meeting characters, alliances or threats before their context has been established.

The three campaigns at a glance
| Game | Place in the reboot story | Core premise established by official materials | Campaign identity | Best reason to choose it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019) | Beginning | Special forces and freedom fighters work to recover stolen chemical weapons in Europe and the Middle East. | Foundation of the reboot timeline and its central task force. | It is the cleanest entry point for a newcomer who wants the whole story. |
| Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022) | Second chapter | A foreign general’s successor, an international cartel and stolen U.S. ballistic missiles drive the conflict. | Indirect continuation set after Task Force 141 has been established. | It develops the 2019 campaign’s world and follows Task Force 141’s next phase. |
| Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (2023) | Third chapter | The direct continuation of Modern Warfare II’s events. | Combines traditional cinematic missions with Open Combat Missions that support different approaches. | It is the right choice for players specifically seeking the newer open-ended mission structure. |
What each campaign contributes
Modern Warfare (2019): the proper starting point
The 2019 campaign introduces the reboot’s version of the world through a crisis involving stolen chemical weapons. Its protagonists include special forces personnel and freedom fighters operating across Europe and the Middle East. That premise gives the game a broad geopolitical frame while establishing the relationships and operating assumptions that the sequels inherit.

Choose this game first if you care about narrative setup more than any single gameplay feature. You will encounter the rebooted cast in the order the new continuity presents them, see how the initial crisis is framed, and understand why later campaigns refer back to this period. The game is also the safest choice when you do not yet know whether you want to continue through both sequels: it functions as the beginning rather than requiring knowledge from another entry.
Modern Warfare II (2022): the middle chapter
Modern Warfare II advances the reboot timeline as an indirect continuation of the 2019 story. Its setup involves the successor of a foreign general, an international cartel and stolen U.S. ballistic missiles. The combination creates a larger, more interconnected threat than the chemical-weapons recovery that launched the reboot.
This is the campaign to play after 2019 when your priority is following Task Force 141 as its mission develops. Starting here can expose you to the central conflict without the first game’s setup, but it removes the context that makes the reboot’s progression easiest to follow. If you have already played the 2019 campaign, the 2022 game is the natural next step rather than a side story.
Modern Warfare III (2023): the sequel with two mission structures
Modern Warfare III is explicitly positioned as the direct sequel to Modern Warfare II. Its campaign combines the series’ traditional cinematic missions with Open Combat Missions. Official campaign materials describe the latter as supporting varied approaches, so the player is not always confined to a single prescribed route through an objective.

That design distinction is the strongest reason to select Modern Warfare III before the earlier games. If you mainly want to experiment with approaches in a more open mission format, it is the entry whose official announcement specifically highlights that option. You should still expect the story to assume that Modern Warfare II came first; the newer structure changes how some missions are played, not where the campaign sits in the timeline.
Why chronological order is the default recommendation
It preserves character and faction introductions
The reboot is one connected narrative rather than three unrelated military scenarios. The first campaign establishes the world and the initial version of Task Force 141. The second builds on that foundation, and the third follows the second directly. Playing in that order lets each escalation arrive after the events that motivate it.
It avoids title confusion with the original trilogy
The reboot shares names with the earlier Modern Warfare games but is not the same continuity. Always use the release year when buying, installing or discussing an entry: 2019, 2022 and 2023 identify the reboot campaigns covered here. A listing that simply says “Modern Warfare” can refer to the 2019 reboot or an older game, depending on the store and edition.
It gives the third game its intended context
Because Modern Warfare III is described as a direct sequel, beginning there means meeting a continuation before seeing the campaign it follows. You can understand its immediate objective in isolation, but you will not have experienced the preceding setup in the order the developers published it. The same concern is less severe with Modern Warfare II, which Activision calls an indirect continuation, but the 2019 campaign still provides the clearest foundation.

Choose a starting point based on your priority
If this is your first time with the reboot
Start with Modern Warfare (2019). It is the only option that begins the reboot timeline and introduces the chemical-weapons crisis that frames the first chapter. Continue to 2022 and then 2023 if you want the complete sequence.
If you have already played the 2019 campaign
Go directly to Modern Warfare II (2022). Its role is to continue that story rather than restart it. Afterward, play Modern Warfare III (2023) to follow the direct sequel.
If mission freedom matters more than story order
Choose Modern Warfare III for its combination of cinematic missions and Open Combat Missions. Treat it as a gameplay-first decision, not the recommended narrative order. If you later decide to experience the story properly, return to 2019 and proceed through 2022 before replaying or finishing 2023.
If you are deciding whether to play only one campaign
The 2019 game is the most self-explanatory single starting point because it begins the reboot. The 2022 game is the logical choice when you specifically want the middle chapter’s conflict involving the cartel, the foreign general’s successor and stolen ballistic missiles. The 2023 game is the targeted pick for Open Combat Missions, but its direct-sequel status makes it the least suitable first exposure to the narrative.

Mission structure: cinematic routes versus Open Combat Missions
The official materials distinguish Modern Warfare III from its predecessors by naming two campaign formats in the same game. Traditional cinematic missions deliver the tightly directed set pieces associated with the series. Open Combat Missions provide more than one possible approach to an objective, allowing players to vary how they move through a scenario.
That description establishes a design difference, not a claim that one format is universally better. The available campaign information does not establish which game has the shortest campaign, the easiest difficulty, the strongest reviews or the most satisfying ending. Those are subjective or separately measurable questions and should not be treated as consequences of the mission labels alone.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Confirm the release year in the product title; “Modern Warfare” without a year is ambiguous.
- Check that the listing includes the campaign, rather than a multiplayer-only product, add-on or bundle whose contents are unclear.
- Match the edition to your hardware generation and account region.
- Review the current installation requirements and updates shown by your platform store, since those details are not fixed by the campaign chronology.
No single current price, retailer listing or edition is established by the campaign descriptions themselves. Treat a store page’s price and availability as time- and region-specific rather than permanent features of the games.

A spoiler-conscious play plan
- Begin with Modern Warfare (2019). Use it to learn the reboot’s setting, the initial chemical-weapons crisis and the first version of the Task Force 141 storyline.
- Move to Modern Warfare II (2022). This is the indirect continuation, with the cartel, the foreign general’s successor and stolen U.S. ballistic missiles forming its central setup.
- Finish with Modern Warfare III (2023). It directly follows the second campaign and adds Open Combat Missions alongside cinematic missions.
- Only reorder for a specific preference. Starting with 2023 is defensible when open-ended mission approaches are your main goal, but it is a deliberate trade-off against narrative context.
Common questions about the reboot order
Do I need the original Modern Warfare trilogy first?
No. The 2019, 2022 and 2023 games form a reboot continuity with their own story. The older trilogy’s similarly named games are separate, so playing them is not a prerequisite for understanding this sequence.
Is Modern Warfare II a remake of the 2009 game?
The 2022 title belongs to the reboot continuity and should be identified by its release year. A shared title does not make it the same campaign or timeline as the earlier game.
Can I play only Modern Warfare III?
You can choose it for its mission format, but it is still the direct sequel to Modern Warfare II. Playing the earlier reboot campaigns first is the better option when story continuity is your priority.
Which campaign is shortest or easiest?
The official campaign information available here does not establish reliable rankings for length or difficulty. Do not use those factors to choose an order unless you consult separate, current evidence.
