Choose Steam Link if your games already run through Steam and you want the shortest path from your gaming PC to your phone. Choose Moonlight with Sunshine if you want to add games and desktop applications manually, stream a full desktop session, or use a broader range of host and client platforms. Neither is a universal latency or image-quality winner: results depend on the host PC, encoder, router, Wi-Fi, phone decoder and controller path.

This guide compares setup, compatibility, non-Steam games, remote access, HDR, controllers and troubleshooting so you can choose the right system for your particular phone and network.

What Steam Link and Moonlight actually do

Steam Link: Steam Remote Play in a phone app

Steam Link does not run the PC game natively on your phone. Steam runs the game on the host computer, encodes the video and audio, sends that stream across the network, and receives your controller or touch input in return. The phone is the display and input endpoint.

The practical advantage is integration. If Steam is already open, your library, controller mappings and launch flow are in one ecosystem. Valve’s product page describes streaming the Steam Library to phones and other supported devices. Start Steam on the PC, connect the phone to the same network, install Steam Link and follow the app’s pairing instructions.

Moonlight: a client paired with a separate host

Moonlight is not the host by itself. You install a host program on the gaming PC, with Sunshine as the currently recommended option in Moonlight’s FAQ and setup guide. Moonlight then discovers or pairs with that host and displays the encoded stream on the phone.

Sunshine includes entries for Steam and Remote Desktop, and the guide explains how to add other applications. That makes the documented workflow broader than a Steam-library-only launch screen. You can expose a non-Steam game, an emulator, a creative application or a desktop session, provided the host and application are configured correctly.

Moonlight’s FAQ recommends Sunshine as fully open-source host software with support for more platforms and GPUs than the older GeForce Experience host workflow. That is a compatibility and setup distinction, not proof that every PC will perform identically.

Which one should you choose?

Pick Steam Link when simplicity matters most

  • Your games are already in Steam.
  • You want the fewest new services and configuration screens.
  • You prefer Steam’s existing library, overlay and Remote Play controls.
  • You mainly stream locally and do not need a manually curated application list.

Steam Link is the sensible first installation for a Steam-centric household. You can test it on your existing network before changing router hardware or adding a separate host service.

Pick Moonlight with Sunshine for broader application control

  • You want to add non-Steam games or arbitrary desktop applications through a host list.
  • You want a documented desktop-streaming option rather than only a library view.
  • Your client devices extend beyond the platforms you plan to use with Steam Link.
  • You are comfortable installing, securing and maintaining a host service.

Moonlight is the better fit when flexibility is worth the extra pairing and host configuration. It is also the more natural choice if your game collection is split among several launchers or you want to reach a desktop session from the phone.

There is no blanket answer to “Is Moonlight better than Steam Link?”

“Better” depends on the workflow. Steam Link wins on Steam integration and initial simplicity; Moonlight with Sunshine wins on documented app-selection and desktop flexibility. The official pages do not provide a controlled comparison that proves one has universally lower input lag or better image quality.

How to set up Steam Link on Android

Valve’s Android support page lists Android 5.0 and newer, a computer running Steam, a supported computer operating system and a 5 GHz wireless router. Newer app versions and phone firmware can change compatibility, so check the current listing if your phone is close to the minimum.

  1. Prepare the PC. Install or update Steam and sign in to the account containing the games. Leave Steam running on the gaming PC.
  2. Prepare the network. Connect the PC and phone to the same home network. Use the 5 GHz band where available; a wired PC connection is preferable when your router and computer support it.
  3. Install Steam Link. Download the official Steam Link app from your phone’s app store.
  4. Pair the phone. Open Steam Link and follow its on-screen instructions. The app will look for a PC running Steam and may display a pairing code that you confirm on the computer.
  5. Run the network test. Let the app test the connection before launching a game. If the test reports instability, fix the network first rather than changing game graphics blindly.
  6. Connect a controller or use touch controls. Select a game from the Steam interface and begin streaming.

Valve’s Android page names Steam Controller, Xbox One S, DualShock 4 on Android 9.0 or newer, Razer Kishi and Raiju Mobile among supported input devices. Other controllers may work without being officially listed; verify compatibility for your phone’s Android version and the current app.

For Apple devices, Valve maintains a separate Apple Steam Link support page. The exact controller and operating-system requirements differ from Android.

How to set up Moonlight with Sunshine

Moonlight’s guide lists Android 4.1 or newer, iOS 9.3 or newer and tvOS 12 or newer as client minimums. It also notes that newer, faster Android devices are more likely to decode a stream smoothly. These are minimums, not a promise of modern high-resolution performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install Sunshine on the gaming PC. Use the current release and start the Sunshine service according to its platform instructions.
  2. Create secure host credentials. Sunshine presents a configuration interface where you create a username and password. Use a unique password because access to this interface can allow someone to add clients that access the computer.
  3. Install Moonlight on the phone. Choose the official client for Android or iOS, or the appropriate supported client for another device.
  4. Pair on the home network. Open Moonlight while the phone and PC are on the same network. Select the discovered computer; Moonlight displays a PIN.
  5. Enter the PIN in Sunshine. Confirm the pairing request in Sunshine’s interface. The phone should then show the applications Sunshine exposes.
  6. Test Steam or Remote Desktop. Start with one of Sunshine’s included entries. Confirm that video, audio and input work before adding more applications.
  7. Add other programs if needed. Use Sunshine’s application settings to add a non-Steam game, launcher or desktop session. Supply the correct executable and working-directory details for the program you are adding.

Moonlight’s guide recommends a mid- to high-end wireless router, 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6, and a wired connection between the PC and router. Pair locally before attempting remote access; it gives you a known-good baseline and avoids debugging the Internet path at the same time.

Steam Link versus Moonlight for non-Steam games

What Steam Link can do

Steam Link is built around Steam Remote Play and the Steam Library. Steam can sometimes launch a non-Steam title added to the library, but the official material here does not establish that every launcher or game will work. Compatibility can depend on overlays, administrator permissions, anti-cheat systems and how the game accepts input.

What Moonlight documents

Sunshine’s setup guide explicitly documents adding applications and using a desktop session. You can therefore expose a game or program that is not part of Steam, as long as it can run on the host and Sunshine is configured to launch it. This is a documented workflow advantage, not a guarantee that every launcher behaves perfectly over a streamed session.

Network quality, latency and image quality

Streaming responsiveness is an end-to-end result. The host has to render and encode frames, the router has to move them without excessive delay or loss, the phone has to decode them, and your input has to travel back to the PC. A powerful phone cannot compensate for a congested wireless network, and a fast router cannot eliminate encode or decode time.

Use the network guidance before buying hardware

  • Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the phone when your home layout and range permit it.
  • Connect the gaming PC to the router with Ethernet whenever practical.
  • Reduce congestion from large downloads, crowded access points and distant mesh hops.
  • Keep the phone within a strong signal area; 5 GHz generally loses range faster than 2.4 GHz through walls.
  • Check the application’s performance overlay or network statistics while reproducing the problem.

Valve’s Steam Link suggested network settings and Android requirements both emphasize the network. Moonlight’s guide makes similar recommendations and adds the preference for a wired host connection.

Does Moonlight have less input lag?

There is no reliable universal answer from the official sources. Moonlight’s FAQ explicitly warns: “These numbers can’t be used to compare to other non-Moonlight clients, since each value may not be measuring the same thing, despite potentially having the same name.” Statistics can also change with resolution, frame rate and hardware.

To make a meaningful personal comparison, use the same PC, game, phone, controller, resolution, frame rate and network. Test each app at the same time of day, record the in-app statistics and change one setting at a time. Report your own result as a setup-specific observation, not as a universal property of either app.

Why image quality can differ

Encoder selection, bitrate, resolution, frame pacing and the phone’s decoder all affect the picture. A stream that looks soft may be bandwidth-limited; one with judder may be dropping or queuing frames; one with visible blocks may be trying to maintain quality on a congested link. Adjust the stream settings gradually and watch whether the overlay attributes the problem to network, encoding or decoding.

Phone, operating-system and controller compatibility

Android and iOS minimums

Steam’s Android support page lists Android 5.0 and newer. Moonlight’s setup guide lists Android 4.1+, iOS 9.3+ and tvOS 12+ for its clients, while warning that newer Android hardware is more likely to decode smoothly. A lower operating-system minimum does not mean an older phone will handle a high-bitrate stream well.

Moonlight also lists clients for Windows, macOS, Linux, Raspberry Pi 4, Fire tablets and TVs, ChromeOS and Apple TV. Some additional ports are community-created and unofficial, so check the status of a specific port before relying on it.

Controllers for phone play

Touch controls are useful for menu navigation but are usually a poor substitute for a physical gamepad in games designed around analog sticks, triggers or many buttons. Steam Link’s Android documentation names Steam Controller, Xbox One S, DualShock 4 on Android 9.0+, Razer Kishi and Raiju Mobile as supported examples.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Moonlight’s guide says iOS and tvOS 13+ can use Xbox One S and PS4 controllers over Bluetooth. It notes controller vibration support on iOS and tvOS 14 for those devices. Support can change with the phone operating system and app version; confirm the exact combination before buying a controller.

For shopping, the relevant category is a Bluetooth phone game controller. Check whether the controller physically fits the phone, supports its operating system and allows charging or cable access while attached.

HDR streaming: a conditional feature, not a guaranteed advantage

Moonlight documents HDR10 streaming as beta. On Android, the guide lists Android 7.0 or newer, an HEVC Main10 hardware decoder and an HDR10-compatible display. It also records known issues including color artifacts and scaling artifacts.

That means HDR depends on the complete chain: game and host output, encoder support, network settings, phone decoder, display and client version. Do not select Moonlight solely for HDR without checking the exact phone and PC combination. If the picture has washed-out colors, clipping or incorrect scaling, disable HDR and establish a stable SDR stream first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Streaming away from home

Steam Link outside the home

Steam Remote Play is designed to connect a Steam client to a Steam host, but success away from home depends on the host’s availability, the phone’s Internet connection, router behavior and ISP conditions. A connection that is excellent on your home Wi-Fi can perform poorly over cellular or hotel Wi-Fi.

Moonlight and Sunshine outside the home

Moonlight’s guide documents optional Sunshine UPnP configuration for forwarding the required ports. Pair on the home network first, then consider remote access. Whether UPnP works depends on the router, firewall, ISP and whether the connection uses carrier-grade NAT or another setup that prevents inbound connections.

iOS and tvOS users must pair on the same network under Apple’s guidelines, according to the Moonlight documentation. Do not expose Sunshine’s configuration interface casually: protect it with a unique password and avoid forwarding administrative access when the streaming connection alone is sufficient.

Troubleshooting checklist

The phone cannot find the PC

  • Confirm Steam or Sunshine is running on the host.
  • Verify both devices are on the same local network and not isolated guest networks.
  • Temporarily disable VPNs that change local routing.
  • Check the host firewall for the streaming application’s access.
  • Restart the app and host service, then pair again.

Video stutters or freezes

  • Move the phone closer to the 5 GHz access point.
  • Connect the PC to the router with Ethernet.
  • Stop competing downloads and uploads.
  • Lower resolution or frame rate temporarily and observe the performance overlay.
  • Test at another location in the home to distinguish Wi-Fi coverage from host load.

Input feels delayed

  • Use a wired or low-latency controller connection where supported.
  • Check whether the phone is decoding frames late rather than the network dropping packets.
  • Reduce stream resolution or frame rate if the phone decoder is overloaded.
  • Compare with the same controller and game on both apps; do not infer a general winner from a different setup.

A game launches but immediately closes

  • For Steam Link, try launching it from the Steam Library and check whether its launcher or anti-cheat system permits streaming.
  • For Sunshine, verify the executable path, working directory and required launcher sequence in the application entry.
  • Test the desktop session to determine whether the issue is the game itself or the application definition.

HDR looks wrong

  • Confirm that the Android phone is Android 7.0 or newer, has an HEVC Main10 hardware decoder and uses an HDR10-compatible display.
  • Update the host and client, then retest with HDR disabled.
  • Use SDR if color or scaling artifacts persist; Moonlight documents HDR as beta.

Decision guide

  1. All your games are in Steam and you want a quick local setup: start with Steam Link.
  2. You need manually added games, desktop access or several launchers: install Sunshine and use Moonlight.
  3. You are unsure whether your network is good enough: test either app on 5 GHz with the PC wired before buying a router.
  4. You care about HDR: check the phone’s decoder and display requirements first; treat Moonlight HDR as beta.
  5. You play with a controller: verify the exact phone OS, app version and controller support before purchase.
  6. You want to stream remotely: establish reliable home pairing first, then evaluate router, firewall, UPnP and ISP requirements.

The practical verdict is straightforward: Steam Link is the lower-friction choice for a Steam-first library, while Moonlight with Sunshine is the more configurable choice for games and applications outside that library. Performance remains a property of the entire setup, not a guaranteed characteristic of one app.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Moonlight without an Nvidia GPU?

Yes, when the host uses Sunshine and the PC meets Sunshine’s supported hardware and software requirements. Moonlight’s FAQ recommends Sunshine because it supports more platforms and GPUs than the older GeForce Experience host workflow. Check the current Sunshine documentation for your specific graphics hardware.

Can Steam Link stream non-Steam games?

Steam can sometimes launch a non-Steam title added to the Steam Library, but the official information does not guarantee compatibility with every launcher or game. Moonlight with Sunshine documents adding applications and desktop sessions directly, making it the clearer option when non-Steam flexibility is the main requirement.

What controller works with Steam Link on Android?

Valve lists Steam Controller, Xbox One S, DualShock 4 on Android 9.0+, Razer Kishi and Raiju Mobile as supported examples. Other controllers may work, but verify the exact Android version, phone and current Steam Link app before buying.

Is Moonlight free to use?

Moonlight is a streaming client project, and its documented setup uses Sunshine as the host. The important practical consideration is that you must install and secure host software separately rather than relying on Steam’s existing host workflow. Check the current app and Sunshine distribution terms for your platform.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I stream PC games to my phone over cellular data?

Remote streaming may work, but it depends on both Internet connections, router and firewall configuration, ISP conditions and the host PC remaining available. Pair and test on the home network first. Moonlight’s guide documents optional Sunshine UPnP port forwarding, while iOS and tvOS pairing has same-network requirements.

Why does my stream look worse even though my Internet speed is high?

Local Wi-Fi quality, interference, router congestion, host encoding, phone decoding and frame pacing can limit a stream even when the Internet plan is fast. Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi, wire the PC to the router where possible and inspect the app’s performance statistics while reproducing the problem.
