If the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022) Campaign is missing or will not start, first confirm that the standalone MWII game is installed and launch it from your platform’s library or dashboard. Then check the exact error against Activision’s current known-issues list: its February 27, 2026 update lists a Campaign “Kipling” launch error on all platforms and a separate disc-installation issue on PS4 and PS5 as under investigation. Neither report establishes the cause of every player’s problem.
1. Confirm you have the standalone Modern Warfare II installed
Activision says MWII moved outside the main Call of Duty experience and is now a standalone title across platforms. Older files installed within the Call of Duty experience were to be automatically removed after August 7, 2025, so an old installation or launcher assumption may no longer work. Activision’s installation guide, updated June 30, 2026, says to install MWII from your platform’s store or the Call of Duty experience’s All Games tab, then launch it from the platform dashboard or library. Cross-launching from the Call of Duty experience is also available. See Activision’s MWII Installation and Setup guide.
Reinstall from your platform library
- Xbox: My games & apps → See all → Full library → All owned games → Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II → Install all.
- PS5: Game Library → Your Collection → Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II → Download.
- PS4: Library → Purchased → Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II → Download.
- Battle.net: Sign in, open All Games, select MWII, then choose Install.
- Steam: Sign in, open Library, select MWII, then choose Install.
- Microsoft Store on PC: Open Library → My Library and select the download icon next to MWII.
If you use a console disc, Activision’s guide says the Call of Duty experience must be installed to install the game. Insert the disc, open the experience, select MWII in All Games, and download it through the platform store.
2. If PlayStation asks you to buy MWII again
Activision documents a reinstall problem in which some owners are sent to the PlayStation Store and shown a full-price purchase prompt instead of the free game launcher. Do not repurchase solely because that prompt appears. Make sure the primary user account that owns the game is signed in, then open that account’s Library and select MWII to download and install the free launcher. If you are already using the primary account, check the Library there anyway. Details are in Activision’s installation guide.

3. Install available console system updates
Before starting a game installation, Activision recommends checking for and completing available system updates. Its guide covers update menus for PS5, Xbox consoles, and PS4. This is a general preparation step, not proof that an outdated console is the cause of a particular Campaign failure. Follow the platform-specific update instructions in Activision’s guide before trying the installation again.
4. Check whether Activision is tracking your exact error
Activision’s known-issues page, dated February 27, 2026, lists two reports that may match this problem. Check the page for current status, since an investigation listing is not a confirmed diagnosis of an individual case: Modern Warfare II known issues.

- “Kipling” error when launching Campaign: Activision says an issue affecting some players on all platforms is under investigation. If this is the error you see, the report may fit your symptom; the listing does not provide a confirmed workaround.
- Disc installation fails on PS4 or PS5: Activision says an issue preventing some players from installing the game from disc on these consoles is under investigation. This is separate from the Campaign launch error.
The same tracker also mentions persistent “One or more DLC packs are out of date” pop-ups for some PS4 players, under investigation with Sony PlayStation. That report is relevant if you see that specific message, but it does not establish that every missing Campaign pack is part of the issue. Its PC performance-loss entry concerns performance, not Campaign access.
