modlr16.dll is an old Autodesk ObjectDBX application file, not a Windows system component. If Windows says that modlr16.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair or reinstall the Autodesk program that is trying to use it rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

ObjectDBX was Autodesk technology for reading and writing DWG and DXF data and working with custom database objects. AutoCAD 2005 belongs to the ObjectDBX 16.x generation, which explains the 16 in this filename. The file is therefore strongly associated with older Autodesk installations, especially products from the AutoCAD 2005 era.

The safest fix: repair Autodesk
The most likely cause is a missing or damaged file in an old Autodesk installation. This can happen after a partial uninstall, disk-cleaning operation, failed update, damaged backup restore, or file corruption.
Repair restores missing product files without requiring you to locate an individual DLL.
Repair from Programs and Features
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Find the Autodesk product that displays the error.
- Select it.
- Click Uninstall/Change, Change, or Modify.
- Choose Repair when the Autodesk maintenance program opens.
- Follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Start the Autodesk application again.
The exact product name may be AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, Autodesk Map 3D, Autodesk Building Systems, or another Autodesk application from the same installation period.
If the repair completes successfully, the program should start without the modlr16.dll message. If the same message remains, run the maintenance program again and choose Reinstall instead.
Reinstall from the original source
If repair cannot find the source files, use the original DVD, setup folder, network deployment location, or other legitimate installation media.
- Close all Autodesk programs.
- Open
appwiz.cpl. - Select the affected Autodesk product.
- Click Uninstall/Change.
- Choose Reinstall, if available.
- Provide the original installation source when prompted.
- Complete setup.
- Restart Windows.
- Apply the service pack intended for that exact Autodesk product and release, if you have the matching official package.
Do not use a service pack for a different AutoCAD generation. Do not copy shared files from AutoCAD 2004, AutoCAD 2006, or another Autodesk product into the repaired installation. ObjectDBX components are tied to product generations, and a similarly named file can still be incompatible.
For AutoCAD 2005, the archived Autodesk Service Pack 1 documentation specifically identifies modlr16.dll as an updated Autodesk Shared file. That makes the matching AutoCAD 2005 installer and service pack more appropriate than a standalone DLL download.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIdentify the program that is actually failing
The DLL name alone does not always identify the product that needs repair. A plug-in, launcher, file converter, or third-party CAD extension may be the process that loads it.
Check the title bar or full error dialog for the application name. Then:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Look for the Autodesk executable if it remains visible during the error.
- Right-click it and choose Open file location.
- Note the folder and executable name.
- Repair that Autodesk product or its associated plug-in.
You can also inspect the Application log:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
eventvwr.msc. - Press Enter.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error recorded at the time the program failed.
- Record the Faulting application name, Faulting module name, and event details.
If a third-party CAD plug-in triggers the message, repair the plug-in and its host Autodesk product. Replacing modlr16.dll alone may leave the plug-in’s other files mismatched.
What the different error messages mean
“The program can’t start because modlr16.dll is missing”
The file is absent from the location where the Autodesk application expects it, or the application’s installation path is damaged. Repair the owning Autodesk product first.
“modlr16.dll was not found”
This usually indicates the same basic problem: the file is missing, misplaced, or unavailable to the application. It can also occur if the application is launching from an incomplete backup or moved installation.
“Error loading modlr16.dll”
The file may exist, but Windows could not load it. Possible reasons include a damaged file, an incompatible Autodesk release, a missing dependency, or an incorrect application path.
“The specified module could not be found”
This wording does not always mean that modlr16.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the file but failed to find one of the libraries it depends on. Repairing the complete Autodesk installation is safer than guessing which dependency to copy.
“modlr16.dll is not designed to run on Windows”
This commonly points to a damaged file, an architecture mismatch, or a file taken from a different product generation. A 32-bit Autodesk application needs its matching 32-bit files. Reinstall the exact Autodesk product rather than trying to convert or replace the DLL.
Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine an old Autodesk binary, particularly if the file is obsolete, modified, unsigned, or bundled inside an old installation.
Check Windows Security
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Review detections from the time the Autodesk program stopped working.
- Expand any detection that identifies the Autodesk installation folder or
modlr16.dll.
Do not restore the file automatically. First confirm that:
- The file is inside the expected Autodesk installation folder.
- The Autodesk software came from legitimate installation media.
- The detection is being reviewed as a possible false positive.
- The Autodesk installation has not been modified by an unknown program.
Microsoft warns that restoring a real threat can put the device at risk. In most cases, repairing or reinstalling Autodesk is preferable to restoring an isolated file from quarantine.
If the file is restored and immediately quarantined again, leave it quarantined and investigate the detection. Contact the security product vendor or Autodesk support rather than repeatedly disabling protection.

modlr16.dll is an Autodesk application file, so Windows does not normally recreate it. SFC and DISM are useful when Windows services, protected system files, or the component store are malfunctioning, but they are not substitutes for Autodesk repair.
Before running either command, save your work and close open programs.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows if requested.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and test the Autodesk program.
Possible results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows-protected files appear intact.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM first, restart, and run SFC again.
If SFC and DISM complete successfully but modlr16.dll is still missing, return to the Autodesk installer. These commands generally do not restore third-party Autodesk files.
Recommended Free Tools
If you want help identifying damaged Windows components without repeatedly running commands and guessing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair features require the full version. Reinstalling the Autodesk program remains the definitive fix when this specific DLL belongs to that installation.
Check architecture and installation paths
Older Autodesk applications are commonly 32-bit, including applications designed for 32-bit versions of Windows from the AutoCAD 2005 period. A 64-bit version of Windows can run many 32-bit applications, but it does not make their libraries 64-bit.
On 64-bit Windows:
C:WindowsSystem32normally contains 64-bit Windows system binaries.C:WindowsSysWOW64normally contains 32-bit Windows system binaries.- Neither folder is the normal home for an Autodesk application DLL.
Look for modlr16.dll under the Autodesk installation directory or its shared component directory. Installation paths vary, so do not assume a universal drive letter or folder name.
To check the application location:
- Find the Autodesk shortcut.
- Right-click it.
- Select Properties.
- Review Target and Start in.
- Use Open File Location if available.
- Confirm that the application and its shared files are on an accessible local drive.
If the application was copied from another computer or restored from a backup, reinstall it from its original source. Copying only the executable and one DLL rarely recreates the registry entries, shared files, dependencies, and configuration required by an Autodesk installation.

Update or reinstall drivers only when the evidence points there
A graphics driver normally does not provide modlr16.dll. Do not treat a graphics driver update as the primary repair. Consider it only if Event Viewer shows a separate display-driver crash or the Autodesk application fails with graphics-related errors after the DLL issue has been resolved.
To check for driver problems:
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Select Properties.
- Review the General tab for an error code.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver only when a suitable driver is available from Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and retest.
Do not remove a working driver just because modlr16.dll is missing. Driver repair cannot recreate an Autodesk ObjectDBX component.
If manually hunting through hardware vendors for the correct package is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show outdated drivers; the free scan identifies them, while driver installation requires the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the Autodesk product remains the correct fix for an Autodesk-owned DLL.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use System Restore after a recent system change
If the error began immediately after disk-cleaning software, an update, driver installation, or another system change, System Restore may reverse that change.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Choose a different restore point if shown.
- Select a restore point dated before the failure began.
- Click Next.
- Review the affected programs.
- Click Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can affect system files, registry settings, and installed programs. It normally does not remove personal documents, but review the restore point carefully before continuing.
After the rollback, test Autodesk. If the program works, avoid repeating the cleanup or installation change that caused the file to disappear.
If the old Autodesk installer will not run
AutoCAD 2005 and related products were designed for much older Windows environments. Compatibility with current Windows versions is not guaranteed.
If the installer refuses to start or fails during setup:

- Copy the installer to a local folder.
- Right-click the main setup file.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Try the compatibility troubleshooter.
- If needed, test a supported older Windows compatibility mode.
- Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
- Temporarily disconnect unnecessary peripheral devices.
- Follow the installer’s own prerequisite instructions.
Do not permanently disable security protections merely to force an old installer to run. If the application is essential, use the original supported environment or a properly isolated virtual machine where appropriate. A newer Autodesk product may be the better option for current DWG workflows.
What not to do
Do not download modlr16.dll from a random DLL website
Unknown DLL download sites sites may provide malware, a modified file, the wrong Autodesk release, or the wrong architecture. Even a clean-looking download may not match the rest of the ObjectDBX installation and may leave the real dependency problem unresolved.
Use the original Autodesk installer, a legitimate administrative installation source, or the matching official Autodesk repair package instead.
Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
Those folders are not general-purpose storage for application DLLs. Copying an Autodesk file there can create confusing path conflicts and will not restore the Autodesk installation’s required files or configuration.

Do not run regsvr32 as a routine fix
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. An internal application library does not automatically support that mechanism.
Running this command:
regsvr32 modlr16.dll
may produce an error stating that the entry point was not found. It can also distract from the actual problem. Use regsvr32 only if Autodesk documentation for the exact component explicitly requires registration.
Do not mix Autodesk releases
Do not replace a missing AutoCAD 2005 component with a file from AutoCAD 2004, AutoCAD 2006, AutoCAD LT, Map 3D, or another Autodesk product unless the installer specifically supplies that shared component. Similar names do not guarantee compatibility.
Do not use registry cleaners
Registry cleaners do not safely reconstruct an Autodesk installation and can remove entries needed by old programs. Use the Autodesk maintenance workflow instead.
What evidence to collect if the error remains
If repair and reinstall do not resolve the problem, record:
- The complete error message.
- The Autodesk product name and release.
- The executable that fails.
- The full installation path.
- The Windows version and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Whether antivirus quarantined the file.
- The Event Viewer Application error.
- Any dependency or runtime error reported by the installer.
- Whether the file exists in the Autodesk shared folder.
- The file’s digital signature status, if one is present.
Do not rely on a file size, hash, or reported version from an unrelated file index as proof that a replacement is correct. Public listings may describe one build, while your Autodesk product may require another.
FAQ
Is modlr16.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with Autodesk ObjectDBX and older Autodesk products. Windows does not normally install or replace it.
Which Autodesk products used it?
Official Autodesk documentation identifies it in AutoCAD 2005 Service Pack 1, Autodesk Map 3D 2005 Service Pack 2, and Autodesk Building Systems 2005 Service Pack 2 documentation. Other Autodesk products may have used related shared components, but the complete product list cannot be established from the filename alone.
Is it part of AutoCAD 2005?
It is strongly associated with the AutoCAD 2005 ObjectDBX generation. The correct repair is the matching AutoCAD 2005 installation, not a DLL copied from another release.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not as a first step. A missing legacy runtime can sometimes cause a dependency error, but the Autodesk installer or its documentation should identify the required prerequisite. Current versions of unrelated runtimes do not replace modlr16.dll.
Can SFC restore the file?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while modlr16.dll belongs to an Autodesk application. Repair or reinstall Autodesk.
Does a 64-bit Windows installation need a 64-bit version of this file?
The Autodesk application and its libraries must match each other. A 32-bit Autodesk program needs its matching 32-bit dependencies, even when it runs on 64-bit Windows.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What if the file exists but the error continues?
A dependency may be missing, the file may be damaged, or the file may belong to another Autodesk release. Repair the complete installation and inspect Event Viewer for the calling executable and dependency details.
Is there an official standalone download?
A standalone current Autodesk download for modlr16.dll should not be assumed. Obtain it through the matching Autodesk installer or repair process, not an unverified DLL archive.
