The ASUS ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X are Windows 11 handheld gaming PCs, not portable Xbox Series consoles. They launched on October 16, 2025, after preorders opened on September 25. U.S. launch pricing was $599.99 for the ROG Xbox Ally and $999.99 for the ROG Xbox Ally X. Current discounts, stock, bundles, and regional prices can change, so check official retailers before buying.

The Xbox partnership adds a controller-first full-screen interface, an aggregated game library, Xbox features, and clearer handheld compatibility labels. Native gaming still means running Windows PC games; Xbox console games are accessed through supported Play Anywhere titles, remote play, or cloud streaming.

ASUS announced the devices on August 20, 2025. Preorders began September 25, and the handhelds became available on October 16 across an initial group of 45 countries, with additional markets and market-specific pricing following. The original announcement’s “pricing unknown” angle is therefore no longer current. See Xbox’s preorder announcement and launch announcement.

What the Xbox branding actually means

“Xbox” describes the software experience and ecosystem integration more than the underlying hardware. ASUS makes the devices, and they run Windows 11 rather than an Xbox console operating system.

  • 🔌 Versatile Connectivity & Complete Accessories Kit | Wi-Fi 6E + Bluetooth 5.4 for lag-free online gaming & device pairing; 2 Type-C ports (USB 4 + USB 3.2 Gen2) support data transfer, video output & PD charging.

The Xbox layer is designed to make Windows more practical with a gamepad. It includes:

  • A controller-first Xbox full-screen experience at startup.
  • A dedicated Xbox button and enhanced Game Bar overlay.
  • An aggregated library that can bring together Xbox games, Game Pass titles, Battle.net games, and other PC storefronts.
  • Access to installed Windows PC games.
  • Xbox Play Anywhere support for eligible games.
  • Remote play from a configured Xbox console.
  • Xbox Cloud Gaming where the service, subscription, and region support it.
  • Xbox accessibility features.

That does not mean an Xbox Ally can run Xbox Series X|S game binaries locally. “Xbox games on the go” can mean several different things:

  1. Native Windows PC play: the game is installed and runs as a PC title on Windows.
  2. Xbox Play Anywhere: an eligible purchase can provide supported Xbox and Windows versions, often with shared saves and achievements.
  3. Remote play: the handheld streams a game from the owner’s Xbox console over a network.
  4. Cloud gaming: the game runs on Microsoft’s servers and streams to the handheld.

Play Anywhere applies only to supported games, not the entire Xbox catalogue. Remote and cloud play also depend on network quality, latency, service availability, and region. Xbox Cloud Gaming requires an eligible plan where available; Game Pass catalogues and promotional offers vary by market and subscription tier.

What changes in Windows?

Microsoft’s handheld-focused changes are intended to reduce the friction of using a desktop operating system with console controls. The Xbox full-screen experience can reduce background activity, defer some non-essential tasks, reserve more resources for games, and put controller navigation ahead of the Windows desktop.

This is still Windows 11 underneath. Buyers retain desktop access, multiple launchers, Windows updates, drivers, settings, account prompts, and the occasional compatibility problem. A game may appear in the unified library but still open a separate launcher. A title that works well with a controller may still have small text, awkward menus, unusual anti-cheat behavior, or an input problem.

The practical trade-off is flexibility versus simplicity. Windows gives these handhelds access to a much broader PC ecosystem than a closed console, but it does not deliver the same consistently controlled experience as a dedicated console operating system.

ROG Xbox Ally: the lower-cost model

The $599.99 ROG Xbox Ally is the value-oriented version. Its AMD Ryzen Z2 A has four Zen 2 CPU cores, eight threads, and eight RDNA 2 GPU cores. It includes 16GB of LPDDR5X-6400 memory, a 512GB M.2 SSD, and a 60Wh battery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That configuration is better suited to buyers who mainly play indie games, older PC games, esports titles, or less demanding releases. It also makes sense for anyone who wants the Xbox-oriented interface and Windows flexibility without paying for the highest-end hardware.

The limitations are equally clear. Modern PC games can consume much of a 512GB drive, especially after updates and downloadable content. Storage can be expanded with a microSD card or, where practical, an SSD upgrade, but those options add cost. The smaller battery is also less forgiving during demanding, unplugged play.

ROG Xbox Ally X: what the extra $400 buys

The $999.99 ROG Xbox Ally X is not simply the same handheld with a higher power limit. Its AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme has eight Zen 5 CPU cores, 16 threads, and 16 RDNA 3.5 GPU cores. It also has 24GB of LPDDR5X-8000 memory, a 1TB M.2 SSD, and an 80Wh battery.

The extra memory and storage provide more headroom for demanding games, large texture packages, background applications, and a bigger installed library. The larger battery should improve endurance potential, although actual playtime still depends on the game, screen brightness, frame-rate target, resolution, power mode, and Windows activity.

The chip includes an NPU for AI-related capabilities ASUS and Xbox described as planned or staged features. That should not be interpreted as an automatic performance boost in every game. Features such as Auto SR and highlight tools depend on software support and the relevant Windows, Xbox, and game versions.

The Ally X also adds or emphasizes features such as built-in impulse triggers. It is the more appropriate choice for buyers who want the strongest performance of the two and are prepared to pay a premium for it.

Game compatibility is more complicated than “it runs Windows”

Xbox introduced a Handheld Compatibility Program with two launch labels:

  • Handheld Optimized: default controller inputs, usable text entry, suitable button icons, legible text, and an appropriate full-screen resolution.
  • Mostly Compatible: playable, but likely to require minor in-game adjustments.

These labels address problems that generic PC compatibility claims overlook. A game can launch successfully while still being unpleasant on a seven-inch display or difficult to control without a mouse and keyboard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Mostly Compatible” is not the same as plug-and-play. It may mean changing graphics settings, remapping controls, adjusting display scaling, navigating a separate launcher, or accepting that some text and menus are less comfortable than on a monitor. Compatibility can also be affected by anti-cheat systems, account requirements, launcher updates, and individual game patches.

Advanced Shader Delivery: useful, but not a universal performance claim

For supported games, the Xbox app can preload shaders during downloads. Xbox says Advanced Shader Delivery can make first launches up to 10 times faster, improve smoothness, and reduce battery use during initial play.

That “up to 10 times” figure is a Microsoft/Xbox claim for supported titles and shader preparation. It is not a promise of 10-times-higher frame rates, faster performance in every game, or universal availability across every storefront. The feature was intended to expand to more games, but buyers should not assume that every installed PC title benefits from it.

Display, controls, storage, and docking

Both handhelds use a 7-inch display with a 120Hz refresh rate and 500-nit brightness. The high refresh rate can make supported games and menus feel smoother, but it does not guarantee that demanding AAA games will run at 120 frames per second. Many games will need a lower render resolution, upscaling, reduced settings, or a lower frame-rate target.

Both models have integrated handheld controls, Xbox controller-inspired grips, microSD expansion, USB connectivity, and docking support. A dock can connect the handheld to a monitor or television and add desktop-style peripherals, but buyers should check the dock’s charger wattage, display-output capability, resolution and refresh-rate support, and port selection individually.

A microSD card is convenient for expanding the library, but it may not deliver the same performance as the internal SSD in every workload. Buyers who regularly install large, storage-sensitive games may prefer a larger internal SSD, particularly on the standard Ally’s 512GB model.

ASUS and Xbox also promoted accessories such as a carrying case and storage options from partners including SanDisk and Seagate. Accessory prices and availability were not established by the launch sources and can change over time.

Performance and battery expectations

Neither model should be judged by its maximum specification alone. Handheld performance depends on the selected power mode, whether the device is plugged in, the game engine, resolution, upscaling, frame-rate cap, graphics settings, and background Windows activity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Ally X has the stronger processor, more memory, more GPU resources, and a larger battery, so it offers more performance headroom. It is still a compact handheld driving a high-resolution-class display; demanding games may require compromises. The standard Ally’s lower price makes it attractive for lighter workloads, but its hardware and 512GB drive leave less room for ambitious AAA installations.

The 80Wh battery is a capacity advantage, not a guaranteed playtime figure. A demanding game at high brightness and a high frame-rate target can consume substantially more power than an indie game with a capped frame rate. Buyers should treat endurance claims as workload-dependent.

Who should buy each model?

Choose the ROG Xbox Ally if:

  • Your budget is closest to the $599.99 launch price.
  • You mainly play indie games, older releases, esports titles, or less demanding PC games.
  • You are comfortable with 512GB of storage or plan to expand it.
  • You want the Xbox interface without paying for the fastest configuration.
  • You can accept the smaller 60Wh battery and lower performance ceiling.

Choose the ROG Xbox Ally X if:

  • You regularly play demanding AAA PC games.
  • The $999.99 launch price is justified by performance, 24GB of memory, 1TB of storage, and the 80Wh battery.
  • You want more room for high-resolution textures and background applications.
  • You value the additional controls and potential future NPU-enabled features.
  • You want the strongest configuration of these two models rather than the lowest entry price.

Consider neither if:

  • You expect a traditional portable Xbox console with native Xbox Series compatibility.
  • You want the simplest possible handheld interface and do not want to manage Windows.
  • You primarily own Steam games and have no interest in Xbox integration.
  • Your budget is closer to value-focused handhelds such as the Steam Deck.
  • You already own a recent high-end Windows handheld and do not need the Xbox software layer.

Alternatives to consider

Steam Deck: A better fit for Steam-first buyers who prioritize value and a more console-like SteamOS experience. Windows storefront access and Xbox integration are not its central strengths.

Existing ROG Ally or ROG Ally X: Discounted previous-generation models may offer better value to buyers who do not need the new Xbox full-screen experience and compatibility labels. Current prices require a retailer check.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Lenovo Legion Go: Relevant for buyers who prioritize a larger display or detachable-controller design rather than the Xbox-specific software layer.

Other Windows handhelds: Competing devices may differ in screen size, processor, controls, battery, software, and price. The key comparison is not just the Ryzen model number; it is the complete combination of performance, memory, storage, battery, controls, and operating-system experience.

What to check before buying

  • Whether your favorite games carry the Handheld Optimized or Mostly Compatible label.
  • How much internal storage your library requires.
  • Whether you need a dock, case, larger microSD card, or SSD upgrade.
  • Whether Xbox Cloud Gaming is available in your region and supported by your plan.
  • Whether remote play is practical on your home network.
  • Whether a game’s separate launcher, anti-cheat system, or keyboard-heavy interface is suitable for handheld use.
  • Whether a current retailer price or bundle changes the value calculation from the original launch prices.

For official availability and product information, start with Xbox.com, the ASUS ROG eShop, and the relevant regional retailer. Xbox also directed buyers to participating retailers at launch.

Verdict

The ROG Xbox Ally is the sensible entry point for lighter PC gaming and Xbox-oriented convenience, while the ROG Xbox Ally X is the premium choice for buyers who need more performance, memory, storage, and battery capacity. The $400 launch-price difference is tied to real hardware changes rather than branding alone.

Neither device is a portable Xbox Series console. They are Windows handheld PCs with a more focused Xbox interface. That makes them unusually flexible, but it also means buyers must accept Windows maintenance, launcher variation, game compatibility differences, and the distinction between native PC play, Play Anywhere, remote play, and cloud streaming.
