ModRetro M64: What It Does, 4K Output, Cartridge Support, and What’s Included

ModRetro’s M64 is a standalone FPGA console for playing original Nintendo 64 cartridges on modern displays. It outputs video at resolutions up to 4K, but that means upscaling the original games—not rendering their artwork in native 4K. It includes power accessories and a pre-installed SD card, but not a controller or HDMI cable.

What the ModRetro M64 is

The M64 is a hardware-based N64 console built around a 16nm AMD Artix UltraScale+ FPGA. It accepts original Nintendo 64 game cartridges and connects to a TV or monitor over HDMI. ModRetro describes its approach as hardware-based emulation and says it is developing the N64 core with FPGAzumSpass and AMD. The company also intends to continue open-source core work.

Does the M64 really play N64 games in 4K?

The M64 supports HDMI output at 720p, 1080p, 1440p, and 4K; ModRetro lists 4K Ultra HD output at 60 fps. This is an output and upscaling specification, not native 4K rendering by the original N64 games. Their original assets and game logic remain those of the N64 era.

ModRetro notes that “4K upscaling of Nintendo 64® format games inherently involves a subjective tuning to achieve the best possible visual experience.” That is the manufacturer’s description of its image processing, not an independent assessment of picture quality. The console also supports uncompressed 48 kHz, 16-bit PCM audio.

  • ELEVATED STAND : Raises your compatible with ModRetro M64 to create additional clearance underneath the console for improved airflow around the base.
  • KEEPS VENTS CLEAR :The stand is shaped to avoid covering the console's ventilation openings and maintain open airflow paths.
  • STABLE ONE-PIECE DESIGN: Solid one-piece construction has no moving parts or separate components to assemble.
  • CLEAN DESKTOP SETUP : Elevates the console while providing a simple, low-profile stand for gaming desks, entertainment centers, and display areas.

Will it play original cartridges and controllers?

ModRetro lists the console as compatible with original N64 cartridges and region-free for NTSC and PAL games. It also lists compatibility with original N64 controllers and several alternatives:

  • ModRetro M64 Pro controllers
  • Hyperkin Premium “Captain” controllers
  • Retro Fighters controllers
  • Nintendo Switch Online N64 controllers when used with an accessory
  • 8BitDo 64 controllers

The M64 has four controller ports. ModRetro’s compatibility claims are not a guarantee that every game or accessory will work without issues. Tom’s Guide reported title-specific problems and a flash cartridge that failed to load in the reviewer’s setup. TechRadar reported a largely positive hands-on experience and a list of nearly 250 titles without issues at its review date. Those are observations from different review setups and points in time, not a definitive current compatibility count. Check ModRetro’s live compatibility list if a particular game or accessory matters to you.

What’s included, and what do you need separately?

Item Included?
M64 console Yes
16GB SD card Yes; pre-installed
Multi-region power adapter and power cable Yes
Controller No; provide a compatible controller
HDMI cable No; provide your own

The console also has a microSD slot, two USB accessory ports, and a USB power port. Its built-in Expansion Pak and Controller Pak are listed as features. The company says Transfer Pak support through Chromatic is planned for a future firmware update, and describes an advanced overclocking mode as future work; do not assume these planned features are available now. Standard overclocking is listed as available.

Is the M64 a faithful N64 replacement?

The M64 is designed to use original cartridges, support both NTSC and PAL regions, and provide modern HDMI output. ModRetro advertises “maximum gameplay accuracy,” but that is a manufacturer claim. Independent reviews show why it is better to treat compatibility and polish as firmware-dependent rather than assume a perfect replica: Tom’s Guide noted bugs and missing features at review time, while TechRadar’s hands-on account was more favorable.

For players who want to use an existing cartridge library on an HDMI display, the M64’s core proposition is straightforward. If your priority is a particular game, flash cartridge, or controller, verify that exact combination against the current compatibility information rather than relying on a broad compatibility claim.

Price, availability, and new games

Launch-time prices reported by reviewers are historical: TechRadar cited $229.99 and a July 28 shipping date, while Tom’s Guide reported a price of about $230 in its review. Those figures do not establish the current price or stock. Check ModRetro’s store for present availability, regional shipping, and delivery estimates.

ModRetro has said it plans to release new cartridge games and re-released classics, including projects such as Xeno Crisis, Xibalba 64, Extreme-G Turbo Fusion, and Buck Bumble in its launch-title update. That is a company plan and announcement, not confirmation that every named game is currently available. Check the current catalog before buying based on a specific title.
