module_lifetime.dll is an internal Avast file, so a missing-file error usually means the Avast installation is damaged, incomplete, quarantined, or partly removed. Repair Avast first; do not download module_lifetime.dll into System32, register it with regsvr32, or replace it with a copy from a random DLL website.
What this file actually does
Public file records describe module_lifetime.dll as “Avast module lifetime” and associate it with Avast installation folders, commonly under:

Some historical Avast installations also used an x64 subdirectory. This is an application DLL, not a normal Windows component. It does not belong in:

C:WindowsSysWOW64
Avast components such as AvastUI.exe and related services may need this library during startup. If the file is missing or damaged, Avast may fail to open, Windows may show an error during startup, or a leftover Avast startup entry may report the error even after Avast has been removed.

The filename alone does not prove that every copy is safe. A file found in an Avast installation directory is more credible than one found in a temporary folder, Downloads, or a user-writable directory, but the file should still be checked with security software.
Causes and the fix to try
| What you observe | Most likely cause | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
| Avast stopped opening after an update | Incomplete or damaged Avast update | Run Avast Repair |
| The error appeared after a security detection | The DLL may be quarantined | Check Avast Quarantine carefully |
| Avast cannot be repaired | Corrupted installation or mixed files | Use Avast’s official uninstall utility in Safe Mode |
| Avast was removed but the error remains | Stale startup entry or scheduled task | Remove Avast completely and clean the leftover startup reference |
| The message says “not designed to run on Windows” or “bad image” | Corrupt or mismatched Avast binary | Repair, then perform a clean reinstall |
| The file exists outside Avast’s folder | Suspicious copy or an unrelated program reference | Scan it and do not launch or replace it |
| The error names another application | That application may hold a stale Avast reference | Repair or reinstall the named application too |
Fix 1: Repair Avast from Windows
This is the safest and most likely solution when Avast is still installed.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11. On some Windows 10 installations, select Apps & features.
- Find Avast Free Antivirus, Avast Premium Security, or the installed Avast product.
- Select the three-dot button beside it.
- Choose Uninstall.
- When the Avast Setup window opens, select Repair rather than removing the program.
- Confirm the repair and allow it to finish.
- Restart Windows if Avast requests it.
- Open Avast and check for an available program update.
Avast repair can restore missing program files and repair broken components. Customized Avast settings may return to their defaults.
How to tell whether repair worked
After restarting, confirm that:
- Avast opens without the
module_lifetime.dllmessage. - The Avast user interface loads normally.
- Windows no longer displays the error during sign-in.
- Avast can show its protection status and update screen.
If the repair option is unavailable, fails, or the same error returns, continue with a complete removal and reinstall.
Fix 2: Remove and reinstall Avast in Safe Mode
Use Avast’s official uninstall utility when the normal repair cannot restore the installation. Avast distributes this utility as avastclear.exe.
- Download
avastclear.exefrom Avast’s official support site using another working browser or computer if Avast is blocking the page. - Save it somewhere easy to find, such as the Desktop.
- Right-click the file and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Choose Reboot to Safe Mode when the utility offers that option.
- After Windows starts in Safe Mode, select the Avast installation that should be removed.
- Choose Remove only if you plan to install Avast again manually.
- If the utility offers Remove & Reinstall, choose Reinstall when that matches your goal.
- Allow the removal to finish.
- Restart Windows normally.
- Install Avast again using Avast’s current official installer.
Do not copy an individual DLL into the old directory after reinstalling. The installer must restore the complete matching set of Avast files, services, configuration data, and dependencies.

Check the installation architecture
Do not mix files from different Avast installations. A 32-bit Avast installation and a 64-bit Avast installation may use different binaries and folders. A catalogued copy that has the same filename may still be wrong for your Avast release or Windows architecture.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
To check Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Look at System type.
Use the Avast installer intended for the installed product, not a manually selected 32-bit or 64-bit DLL. Historical public file listings are identification evidence, not an official Avast compatibility table.
Fix 3: Check Avast Quarantine
If the error appeared immediately after Avast detected a file, the DLL may have been quarantined. Restore it only when you can confirm that it is the genuine Avast file and that the detection was a false positive.
- Open Avast.
- Select Menu.
- Select Quarantine.
- Look for
module_lifetime.dll. - Inspect its original path. An Avast installation directory is more credible than a temporary or user-writable location.
- Review the detection name and the time it was moved.
- If you are certain it is a genuine Avast file detected incorrectly, choose More options.
- Select Restore and add exception.
- Restart Windows and test Avast.
Restoring a quarantined file carries a security risk. If the path is unusual, the detection is unclear, or the file appeared after another security incident, do not restore it. Submit it to Avast Threat Labs for analysis or repair Avast through the official installer instead.
Never overwrite a quarantined file with a download from a DLL repository.

First remove Avast properly:
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Search for Avast and related Avast products.
- Select each relevant entry and choose Uninstall.
- If normal removal fails, run Avast’s official uninstall utility in Safe Mode.
- Restart Windows.
Then inspect startup entries:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Disable an entry that clearly references Avast and points to a file that no longer exists.
- Do not disable unrelated Windows or security entries merely because their names are unfamiliar.
You can also inspect Task Scheduler:
- Open Start and search for Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler Library.
- Look for an unmistakable Avast task whose action points to a missing Avast installation.
- Confirm that Avast is truly removed before disabling or deleting that task.
If the error names another application rather than Avast, repair that named application. It may have retained an old Avast startup reference or may be reporting a missing dependency of its own.
Fix 5: Distinguish a missing file from a bad-image error
These messages do not all mean the same thing:
- “The program can’t start because module_lifetime.dll is missing” usually indicates that the file is absent from the expected Avast directory.
- “The code execution cannot proceed because module_lifetime.dll was not found” also points to absence or an incorrect search path.
- “The specified module could not be found” can mean the DLL itself is missing or that one of its dependencies cannot load.
- “The file is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error” points more strongly to corruption, incompatible files, or a mixed Avast installation.
For a bad-image message, do not simply copy a replacement DLL. Run Avast Repair first, then perform the Safe Mode removal and reinstall if needed.
Fix 6: Use Windows repair commands only for wider Windows corruption
module_lifetime.dll is associated with Avast, not Windows protected system files. Therefore, System File Checker is not expected to download or recreate the correct Avast copy.
Use DISM and SFC when Windows itself shows other problems, such as damaged system components, repeated servicing errors, or unrelated protected files failing.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Repair or reinstall Avast separately.
These commands may repair Windows component corruption, but they do not replace an Avast-owned DLL with the correct Avast version.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing which Windows component changed can make troubleshooting slow and inconclusive. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows problems and show what it found; repairs are completed by the full version, but reinstalling Avast remains the definitive fix for this application-owned file.
Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32 for this file
Do not run:
regsvr32 module_lifetime.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide the COM registration entry point DllRegisterServer. There is no public evidence that this internal Avast runtime library is a registration DLL.

Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, .NET, Windows Features, and Device Manager are not first-line fixes for this Avast DLL.
You can check Windows Features if another program separately reports a missing Windows component:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Review only the feature named by the other application.
- Do not enable random features to solve an Avast installation error.
Device Manager is similarly relevant only when hardware or driver errors are present:

- Select Device Manager.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Update or reinstall only the device driver associated with that warning.
Driver hunting can mean comparing hardware IDs, versions, and manufacturer packages manually. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; the free scan shows findings, while driver installation is completed by the full version. A driver update will not replace an Avast-owned DLL unless a separate driver problem is also involved.
Safe sources and unsafe shortcuts
The safe sources for this problem are:
- Avast’s official repair instructions
- Avast’s official uninstall utility
- Avast’s official installer
- Avast’s own Quarantine and false-positive process
- Microsoft documentation for Windows repair commands
Avoid DLL download websites and manual replacement because the file may have:
- Malware or tampering
- The wrong Avast release
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- Missing dependencies
- A different file with the same name
Even a clean-looking replacement often leaves the damaged Avast installation, services, registry entries, or startup references untouched.

Information to collect if the error remains
Before seeking further support, record:
- The complete error text
- Which executable is named, such as
AvastUI.exe - Your Avast product and installed version
- Your Windows version and system type
- The path where Windows expects the DLL
- Whether the file appears in Avast Quarantine
- Whether the issue began after an Avast update, Windows update, or security detection
- Whether Avast Repair completed successfully
- Whether the error remains after a Safe Mode removal and reinstall
This information distinguishes a missing Avast file from a dependency failure, stale startup entry, bad-image error, or unrelated application problem.
FAQ
Is module_lifetime.dll a Windows file?
No. Public records associate it with Avast installation directories. It is not a normal System32 or SysWOW64 component.
Can I download the DLL and paste it into System32?
No. That can introduce malware, create an architecture mismatch, and fail to repair the Avast installation that requested the file.
Will SFC fix module_lifetime.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows system files, while this file belongs to Avast. Repair or reinstall Avast.
Should I run regsvr32 module_lifetime.dll?
No. There is no evidence that this internal Avast DLL supports COM registration.
What if Avast is no longer installed?
Use Avast’s official uninstall utility to remove leftovers, then inspect Startup apps and scheduled tasks for stale Avast references. Do not restore the DLL to Windows folders.
What if the error names a different program?
Repair or reinstall the named program as well. It may contain a stale Avast reference, or it may be the application that is actually missing a dependency.
Should I restore the file from Quarantine?
Only after confirming the original Avast path and determining that the detection was a false positive. If uncertain, leave it quarantined and reinstall Avast from its official installer.
