mofd.dll Errors: A Safe WMI Repair Checklist for Windows

mofd.dll is a Microsoft Windows WMI component, so missing or load errors usually call for Windows repair rather than a replacement DLL download. Start by checking the file’s path and signature, then use Windows Update, DISM, and SFC before repairing the individual program that reports the error.

What this file actually does

mofd.dll is the Microsoft WMI MOF compiler DLL. It implements the IMofCompiler COM interface, which compiles Managed Object Format files and stores their class definitions in the Windows Management Instrumentation repository. Microsoft documents this interface in its IMofCompiler reference.

WMI means Windows Management Instrumentation. It is Windows’ management and monitoring infrastructure, used by administrative tools, installers, hardware utilities, security software, scripts, and applications that need information about the operating system or devices. The WMI infrastructure is provided through the Windows winmgmt service and normally uses files in the WMI directory described by Microsoft’s WMI architecture documentation.

The normal locations are:

  • On 64-bit Windows: C:WindowsSystem32wbemmofd.dll
  • For the 32-bit WMI component on 64-bit Windows: C:WindowsSysWOW64wbemmofd.dll

Here, %WINDIR% usually means C:Windows, but it can be different if Windows was installed on another drive or directory. System32 contains native system components on 64-bit Windows. SysWOW64 contains many 32-bit system components, despite the confusing name.

Do not assume that a copy of mofd.dll in an application’s installation folder is the correct Windows component. The expected WMI paths and a Microsoft digital signature matter more than the filename alone.

Causes by symptom

Symptom Likely cause Best next step
Windows tools and several programs report the error Damaged or deleted Windows component, component-store corruption, or WMI damage Install updates, then run DISM and SFC
Only one application fails Damaged application files, incomplete installation, or an application-specific dependency Repair or reinstall that application
The error appeared immediately after an update or upgrade Windows Update or component-store failure Restart, retry Windows Update, then run DISM and SFC
The file is absent from System32wbem or SysWOW64wbem Deleted, quarantined, or corrupted Windows file Check Windows Security, then use DISM and SFC
A security product recently quarantined a file Possible false detection or malware-related file removal Review Protection history and scan before restoring anything
“The specified module could not be found” appears even though the file exists A dependency, path, permissions, or architecture problem Check both WMI paths and identify the calling application
The file exists but has no Microsoft signature Wrong file, altered file, or unsafe replacement Do not register or copy it; scan and repair Windows
A device utility fails while Windows itself works Application or driver issue rather than a missing system file Repair the utility and check the related device driver

Common wording includes:

  • “mofd.dll is missing”
  • “The program can’t start because mofd.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “mofd.dll was not found.”
  • “mofd.dll could not be loaded.”
  • “The specified module mofd.dll could not be found.”
  • “mofd.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
  • “Cannot register mofd.dll.”

The exact wording varies by Windows loader and the application making the request. “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that mofd.dll itself is absent. A required dependency may be missing, or the application may be loading the wrong architecture.

Fix 1: Restart, update Windows, and test again

A pending update or incomplete restart can leave protected Windows components in an inconsistent state.

  1. Save your work and restart Windows.
  2. Open Start > Settings.
  3. In Windows 11, select Windows Update.
  4. In Windows 10, select Update & Security > Windows Update.
  5. Select Check for updates.
  6. Install available updates.
  7. Restart again, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  8. Open the program that reported the error.

If the error began after a Windows upgrade or update, this step may complete pending component servicing. If the message remains, continue with the repair commands below.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

This is the main repair path when mofd.dll is missing, corrupted, or absent from the expected WMI directory. Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance recommends repairing the Windows image with DISM before running SFC.

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.

DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source for protected files. Microsoft provides additional details in its Repair a Windows image documentation.

Run SFC

After DISM completes, use the same elevated Command Prompt and enter:

sfc /scannow

Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and test the affected application or Windows tool again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The result tells you what happened:

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected files passed the check, so investigate the application, dependency, architecture, or WMI service.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: restart once, run DISM again, and repeat SFC. If it still cannot repair the files, continue to the recovery options later in this guide.
  • DISM reports that source files could not be found: run Windows Update, confirm that the PC is online, and retry. Persistent component-store failure may require an in-place Windows repair.

Manually copying mofd.dll into System32 or SysWOW64 is not a substitute for this process. Windows needs the correct component version, architecture, permissions, and servicing state.

If repeatedly hunting through system folders and rerunning SFC/DISM leaves you unsure what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the problem and show what it identifies; its free scan shows the findings, while repair is handled by the full version. It is optional, and Windows DISM/SFC remain the appropriate built-in repair path.

Fix 3: Check both WMI paths and the file signature

Use this check when the message identifies a 32-bit program, when only one application fails, or when you suspect quarantine or an unsafe replacement.

Check whether the files exist

Open File Explorer and enter each path in the address bar:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
%WINDIR%System32wbem

Then check:

%WINDIR%SysWOW64wbem

The second path is relevant only on 64-bit Windows. A 32-bit application may require the SysWOW64wbem copy even when the native 64-bit copy is intact.

If a file is missing from one directory, do not copy the other architecture’s file into it. Run DISM and SFC instead.

Check the publisher signature

  1. Right-click mofd.dll.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Digital Signatures tab.
  4. Select the signature entry.
  5. Select Details.
  6. Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and identifies Microsoft as the signer.

A Microsoft signature supports authenticity, but the filename alone does not. A file in an application directory, Downloads folder, or temporary folder should not be treated as the Windows copy.

You can also check a specific path from PowerShell:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Get-AuthenticodeSignature "$env:windirSystem32wbemmofd.dll"

On 64-bit Windows, check the 32-bit copy with:

Get-AuthenticodeSignature "$env:windirSysWOW64wbemmofd.dll"

Do not treat one version number, file size, or hash as universal. These details vary by Windows release, architecture, language, and servicing level.

Fix 4: Repair or reinstall the affected program

If Windows tools work and only one application reports mofd.dll, the application may have damaged files, an incomplete installation, or a dependency problem. The fact that the error names a Windows DLL does not prove that Windows is the only cause.

Repair a Windows app

On Windows 11:

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Find the affected program.
  4. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  5. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  6. Select Repair.
  7. Start the application again.

If Repair does not help, use Reset only if you understand that it may remove the application’s local settings or stored data.

On Windows 10, look under Settings > Apps > Apps & features. Select the program and use its available repair option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repair a desktop program

For a traditional desktop application:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs > Programs and Features.
  3. Select the affected program.
  4. Choose Change, Repair, or Modify, if provided.
  5. Complete the vendor’s repair wizard.
  6. Restart Windows and test again.

If no repair option exists, uninstall the application, restart, and reinstall it from its official installer or Microsoft Store listing. Back up application data first.

For a game, use the launcher’s official Verify, Repair, or equivalent file-checking command before reinstalling Windows components. Do not place a downloaded DLL into the game directory.

If the program still fails after repair, note whether its error changes. A different missing-file message can identify the next dependency, while the same message points toward application logs, permissions, or an architecture mismatch.

Fix 5: Review Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software may quarantine a file after a detection, malware cleanup, or mistaken classification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Privacy & security on Windows 11, or Update & Security on Windows 10.
  3. Select Windows Security.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Review recent actions involving the WMI directory or mofd.dll.

Microsoft explains these actions in its Protection history guidance.

Do not restore a quarantined file just because its name is familiar. First confirm that the expected Windows copy is missing, verify the Microsoft signature if a copy is present, and run a security scan. If Defender identifies the file again after restoration, leave it quarantined and investigate the detection.

Run a Full scan from Virus & threat protection > Scan options. If files repeatedly disappear or become modified, disconnect from sensitive accounts, preserve important data, and consider an offline security scan or professional malware investigation.

Fix 6: Check the WMI service without rebuilding WMI

The WMI infrastructure uses the winmgmt service. Checking its state can distinguish a service problem from a missing file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Type services.msc.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Find Windows Management Instrumentation.
  5. Confirm that its status is running or that it can start when requested.
  6. Right-click it and select Restart only if Windows permits the action.

Do not stop WMI repeatedly or delete the WMI repository as a first-line fix. Rebuilding the repository can affect installed providers and is not a general solution for a missing mofd.dll.

You can also query the service from an elevated Command Prompt:

sc query winmgmt

If the service fails to start, record the error and check Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System and Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > WMI-Activity. Persistent WMI service errors after DISM and SFC justify deeper Windows recovery rather than a DLL download.

Fix 7: Check device drivers only when a device utility is involved

mofd.dll is not a graphics, chipset, audio, or Visual C++ runtime file. Updating a driver is not the normal fix for this DLL. It becomes relevant when the error appears only in a hardware-management utility or immediately after a device installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the device category related to the failing utility.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Properties > Driver.
  6. Review the provider and driver status.
  7. Use Update Driver and let Windows search, or install the driver from the device manufacturer’s official support page.
  8. Restart Windows and test the utility.

If the problem began after a driver update, use Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver, if available. If the device is malfunctioning, select Uninstall device, restart, and allow Windows to detect it again. Do not remove unknown devices merely because they have a warning icon without recording their identity first.

If checking dozens of device versions manually is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and the official device manufacturer remains the definitive source for a program-specific driver.

Fix 8: Do not use routine regsvr32 registration

A common suggestion for DLL errors is:

regsvr32 mofd.dll

That is not a general DLL repair command. Microsoft documents Regsvr32 as a utility for DLLs that expose the appropriate registration entry points.

mofd.dll is a COM DLL, and some file inventories report registration-related exports. However, current Microsoft troubleshooting guidance does not establish manually registering mofd.dll as the normal repair for Windows 11 or Windows 10. Registration will not restore a missing file, repair a damaged component store, replace a wrong-architecture copy, or fix a missing dependency.

Use DISM and SFC for a Windows component. Use the affected program’s installer for an application-specific problem. Only run regsvr32 when documentation for the exact program or component specifically requires it and you have confirmed the correct 32-bit or 64-bit command environment.

Fix 9: Use Windows recovery when repair does not hold

Escalate when SFC reports repairs that do not survive a restart, DISM cannot repair the image, files become corrupted again, or several Windows components fail.

Windows 11 repair reinstall

On eligible Windows 11 installations:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System > Recovery.
  3. Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
  4. Select Reinstall now.
  5. Follow the prompts.
  6. Keep the computer connected to power and the internet.

Microsoft describes this option in Fix issues by reinstalling the current version of Windows. It reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings when the option is available.

System Restore

Use System Restore when the problem began after a clear software, driver, or update change and an appropriate restore point exists:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
  2. Open the result.
  3. Select System Restore.
  4. Choose a restore point from before the error began.
  5. Review the affected programs and drivers.
  6. Complete the wizard.

System Restore does not replace a backup of personal files. Microsoft’s Windows recovery options explain when to use it and other recovery methods.

In-place Windows repair

If normal repairs fail but Windows still starts, an in-place reinstall using official Windows installation media can replace damaged system files while preserving personal files and, depending on the selected option, applications. Back up important files first and follow Microsoft’s Windows reinstallation guidance.

A clean installation is a last resort. Confirm backups, application installers, license information, and recovery keys before choosing it.

Why you should not download mofd.dll

Random DLL download pages are risky because the file may contain malware, belong to another Windows build, use the wrong architecture, or be modified. Even a clean file may not fix the component store, WMI service, missing dependency, permissions, or application installation that caused the error.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not copy a replacement into System32 or SysWOW64 as the first step. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, the official application installer, and Microsoft recovery tools instead.

Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET are not the source of this Windows WMI component, so reinstalling those runtimes is not a normal fix for mofd.dll.

FAQ

Is mofd.dll safe?

The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows WMI component. Check that it is in the expected wbem directory and that its digital signature is valid. A Microsoft signature supports authenticity, but a filename alone does not.

Is mofd.dll part of Windows 10 and Windows 11?

Yes. It belongs to the Windows WMI infrastructure. Exact versions and file metadata vary by Windows release and servicing level.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which copy does a 32-bit program use?

A 32-bit program on 64-bit Windows may use the copy under %WINDIR%SysWOW64wbem. Native 64-bit components normally use %WINDIR%System32wbem.

Should I reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

Usually no. mofd.dll is a Windows WMI component, not one of those redistributables.

What if SFC says it repaired the file but the program still fails?

Restart first. Then determine whether Windows tools also fail, check both WMI directories, verify the signature, repair the affected application, and inspect Event Viewer or the application’s logs. The remaining problem may be a dependency, permission, architecture, malware, or disk issue.

When should I investigate the disk?

Investigate disk health when files repeatedly become corrupted, Windows repairs the same files after every restart, applications crash in unrelated areas, or the system reports file-system errors. Back up important data before intensive recovery work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I register mofd.dll with regsvr32?

It may technically expose registration-related functionality, but manual registration is not the standard current repair. Use DISM/SFC or repair the owning program unless specific documentation instructs you otherwise.

What is the safest first move?

Restart, install pending Windows updates, run DISM followed by SFC in an administrator Command Prompt, and then repair the affected application if only that program is failing.
