mofinstall.dll is a genuine Windows system component, so a mofinstall.dll missing, not found, or could not be loaded error usually points to damaged Windows files, an incomplete update, or a dependency problem rather than a missing Visual C++ runtime.

What mofinstall.dll is
MOF means Managed Object Format, a language Windows uses to describe WMI classes, providers, and instrumentation. WMI is the Windows Management Instrumentation system used by Windows and software to query hardware, services, devices, event data, and configuration.

The normal location is:
C:WindowsSystem32wbemmofinstall.dll
The wbem directory contains Windows Management Instrumentation components. Windows also keeps component copies under WinSxS, allowing servicing tools to restore protected files.
Microsoft servicing manifests list mofinstall.dll alongside WMI files including mofd.dll, fastprox.dll, wbemcore.dll, and wbemcomn.dll. Microsoft documents the file in Windows servicing packages for different Windows releases and architectures, including Windows servicing documentation and a Windows 11 Safe OS Dynamic Update.
It is not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX component, .NET assembly, or ordinary game DLL. Windows versions have different builds, architectures, servicing levels, file sizes, and file versions, so there is no single universally correct copy to download.
The related mofcomp.exe program is the MOF compiler. mofinstall.dll supports Windows installation and WMI-related servicing; it is not itself the compiler. Microsoft explains the relationship in its documentation for mofcomp.exe and running the MOF compiler.
First, verify the path and signature
Before repairing Windows, check whether the error names the Windows copy or a program-bundled copy.
- Press Win+E.
- Paste this path into the address bar:
text
C:WindowsSystem32wbem
- Look for
mofinstall.dll. - Right-click it, select Properties, and open Digital Signatures.
- Check that the signer is Microsoft and that Windows reports the signature as valid.
A missing file is not automatically malware. Conversely, a file with the correct name in a temporary folder or application directory is not automatically safe. Do not replace a suspicious copy manually.
If you use 64-bit Windows, do not copy a 32-bit DLL into System32, and do not copy a 64-bit DLL into SysWOW64. Windows uses redirection rules for 32-bit applications, but that does not make the two locations interchangeable. The correct repair source is Windows servicing, not a file copied from another machine.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFix 1: Install Windows updates, then restart
Because Microsoft delivers mofinstall.dll through Windows servicing packages, Windows Update is the safest first repair.
- Open Start > Settings.
- In Windows 11, select Windows Update.
- In Windows 10, select Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every available quality, servicing, and cumulative update.
- Restart the PC, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Try the affected program again.
If Windows Update reports an error, retry after disconnecting unnecessary USB devices and restarting. If the update repeatedly fails or the DLL error remains, continue with DISM and SFC.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then uses that repaired store to restore protected system files. Run them in that order.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
bat
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Then run:
bat
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application or installer that produced the error.
A successful result may say that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations, or that it found and repaired damaged files. If SFC repaired mofinstall.dll, the error should disappear after the restart.
If DISM fails, run Windows Update again and repeat the commands. If SFC says it could not repair some files, save the CBS log and use Microsoft’s guidance for System File Checker and DISM repairs. Do not download a replacement DLL while the component store is still damaged.
Manually hunting through Windows versions and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair offers a free scan that shows detected issues; repairs are performed by the full version, and it is optional rather than required for this Windows repair.
Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
A security product can quarantine a genuine file after a detection or cleanup event. Do not restore a file solely because its name is mofinstall.dll.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Privacy & security > Windows Security in Windows 11.
On Windows 10, select Update & Security > Windows Security. - Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Expand any recent detection related to
mofinstall.dll. - Check the original file path, publisher, and detection details.
Restore the file only when the original path was the expected Windows location and you have verified that the file was Microsoft-signed. Microsoft explains the risks of restoring detections in its Protection History guidance.
If the file appeared in an unexpected folder, leave it quarantined and run a Full scan. Use an Microsoft Defender Offline scan when the system shows signs of persistent malware. A missing DLL by itself does not prove that malware caused the problem.
Fix 4: Repair the application that triggered the error
Although mofinstall.dll belongs to Windows, the program that reports the error may be the first component that tries to use WMI. A game launcher, hardware utility, installer, or management application can expose a Windows problem without being the cause.
If the error names a file inside the program’s own installation folder:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, choose Reset only if you understand that it may remove the program’s local settings.
- Otherwise uninstall the program.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current installer from the application developer’s official source.
- Install it again and test it.
A game’s Verify files feature is useful only when the error concerns a file bundled inside that game’s directory. It will not restore the Windows copy in C:WindowsSystem32wbem.

Run the installer as administrator only when the developer’s instructions require it. Reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not an evidence-based first fix for this particular Windows component.
Fix 5: Restore a recent Windows change
Use System Restore when the failure began after a driver installation, Windows update, cleanup tool, or system configuration change.
- Press Win+R.
- Enter:
text
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, updates, and installed programs while preserving personal files. Microsoft documents the process in its System Restore guidance.

A recently installed or damaged chipset, storage, hardware-monitoring, or management driver can expose WMI failures. This is not a reason to replace mofinstall.dll, but updating the driver may resolve the event that triggers the loader error.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category related to the failure.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver > Search automatically for drivers, or install a matching package from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Do not install a random driver merely because its date is old. If the problem started immediately after a driver update, use Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver when that button is available.
Finding the correct driver among many hardware components can involve checking versions one by one. Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan showing detected driver issues; driver installation is performed by the full version, and it remains optional.

Why regsvr32 usually does not help
Do not run this as a reflex:
regsvr32 mofinstall.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose the COM DllRegisterServer entry point. Microsoft documents this behavior in its regsvr32 reference. mofinstall.dll is a Windows WMI and servicing component, not an ordinary self-registering application COM server. The command may report that DllRegisterServer was not found, and it does not repair the component store.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If the error says “specified module could not be found”
That wording does not always mean mofinstall.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named DLL but failed to load one of its dependencies.
Check:
- The full path shown in the error.
- Whether the file exists in
System32wbem. - Whether the file has a valid Microsoft signature.
- Whether DISM and SFC report component-store errors.
- Whether the failure occurs only in one application.
- Recent entries in Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application and System.
If SFC reports a repair but the error continues, the application may be loading another copy from its own directory. If DISM or SFC cannot repair the file, preserve the CBS log and use a valid Windows repair source instead of manual copying.
FAQ
Is mofinstall.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. It ships as part of Windows and appears in Microsoft servicing packages. Its usual location is C:WindowsSystem32wbem.
Is mofinstall.dll part of Visual C++?
No. Installing Visual C++ Redistributable packages is not the normal fix for this file.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I download mofinstall.dll?
Avoid random DLL download sites. The file’s version, architecture, and servicing level must match Windows, and a downloaded copy may be tampered with or fail because the real problem is a missing dependency or damaged component store. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, or official Windows installation media.
Should I copy a 32-bit version into SysWOW64?
No. Do not mix 32-bit and 64-bit Windows components or copy files between System32 and SysWOW64. Let Windows servicing restore the correct architecture.
What should I collect if nothing works?
Record the Windows edition and build, the complete error wording, the full path named by the error, Event Viewer details, the SFC result, the CBS log location, and the program or installer that triggered the failure. This distinguishes a missing Windows file from a dependency, application, or component-store problem.
