tssysprep.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows Sysprep component, not a game DLL or Visual C++ runtime. If Windows says it is missing, corrupt, or could not be loaded, repair the Windows image rather than downloading a replacement file.
What this file actually does
The file description is Remote Desktop Session Host Server Sysprep. It is a Sysprep provider used during Windows deployment, imaging, and preparation tasks involving Remote Desktop Services and Local Session Manager operations.

Causes and symptoms
| What you see | Most likely explanation | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| Sysprep fails while preparing an image | Damaged component store, failed servicing, or an incomplete image operation | Review Sysprep logs, then run DISM and SFC |
| Windows setup or an upgrade reports the file | Failed upgrade or damaged Windows installation | Install updates, repair Windows, or use matching installation media |
| A normal game or application reports the file | Incorrect attribution, damaged Windows files, or a suspicious application-folder copy | Record the executable path and verify the DLL location and signature |
| “The specified module could not be found” | The DLL or one of its dependencies may be unavailable | Repair Windows rather than copying an arbitrary DLL |
| “Not designed to run on Windows” | Wrong-version, damaged, or mismatched system component | Use DISM and SFC; do not replace it with a random download |
| The file disappeared after security software acted | Defender or another antivirus may have quarantined it | Check Protection history before restoring anything |
| The issue began after an update or driver change | A broader system change may have damaged servicing or configuration | Try System Restore if a suitable restore point exists |
Fix 1: Install updates and restart
Pending updates can contain component repairs and servicing changes needed by Sysprep.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if it does not immediately require a restart.
- Retry the operation that produced the error.
On Windows 10, Windows Update is under Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
If the same message returns, continue with DISM and SFC. Do not start by copying tssysprep.dll into System32.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store, which supplies clean system files. SFC then checks protected files and replaces damaged copies. Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance recommends running DISM before SFC.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Do not close the window until the scan reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows afterward and retry Sysprep, setup, or the affected operation.
A successful SFC result may say that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once.
If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, use a matching Windows installation source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual Windows folder on suitable installation media. The source must closely match the installed Windows edition and build. An unrelated ISO can make the problem worse or leave the component store inconsistent.
Manually hunting for the right component version and repeating SFC/DISM without knowing what changed can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its scan identifies; repairs are performed by the full version, but Windows servicing remains the definitive repair path for this Microsoft component.
Fix 3: Check the file path and Microsoft signature
A genuine copy should normally be under:
C:WindowsSystem32setuptssysprep.dll
Your Windows directory may use a different drive or folder, so %WINDIR% is the reliable form.
To inspect it:
- Press Windows key + E.
- Enter
%WINDIR%System32setupin the address bar. - Look for
tssysprep.dll. - Right-click it and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Inspect the signer and signature details.
The full path matters. A copy inside a game folder, download folder, temporary directory, or an unfamiliar application directory should not be assumed to be legitimate merely because its filename matches.
If Windows reports that the file is missing from the normal path, let DISM and SFC restore it. Do not use a file selected only because it has the same name, a newer date, or a matching bitness.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security Protection history
Security software can quarantine a system file after malware remediation or a false detection. It can also remove a suspicious copy placed in an application directory.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Privacy & security > Windows Security.
- Choose Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving
tssysprep.dll. - Expand a detection to see its path and action.
On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.
Restore a quarantined file only after confirming that it is the genuine Microsoft copy, has the expected Windows path, and the device is clean. If the detection points to an application folder or an unknown location, do not restore it. Allow Defender to remove it and repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
Fix 5: Repair Windows 11 through Windows Update
Supported Windows 11 installations may offer a repair reinstall that preserves applications, files, and settings.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts and keep the computer connected to power and the internet.
- Restart if requested, then retry the failed operation.
This option reinstalls the current Windows version. It is useful when ordinary component repair does not restore Sysprep files but the existing installation still starts normally. Microsoft describes this process in its repair reinstall instructions.
Fix 6: Perform an in-place repair
Use matching Windows installation media if DISM cannot repair the component store and the Windows 11 repair reinstall is unavailable.
- Obtain installation media that matches the installed Windows edition and build as closely as possible.
- Start Windows normally.
- Connect or mount the media.
- Open it in File Explorer.
- Run
setup.exe. - Choose the option to keep personal files and apps.
- Review the choices and start the repair.
Starting setup.exe from inside Windows is important when you want an in-place repair. A clean installation is a different procedure and can remove applications, settings, or personal data. Follow Microsoft’s installation-media guidance, and back up important files first.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix 7: Use System Restore after a recent system change
If the error began immediately after an update, driver installation, or other system change, System Restore may return the component and related settings to an earlier state.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not register this DLL with regsvr32
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. tssysprep.dll is a Sysprep provider, not a conventional self-registering COM component.
Running a command such as this is normally irrelevant:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →regsvr32 tssysprep.dll
It may return an “entry point not found” message. That does not repair the Windows component. Use DISM and SFC instead.
Should you update drivers
A driver update is not the normal fix for a missing Sysprep provider. However, if the failure began during image deployment after a storage, chipset, or virtualization change, install drivers only from the computer or hardware manufacturer’s official source.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the device and choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and record the provider and version.
- Compare it with the manufacturer’s current package.
- Create a restore point before installing a replacement.
- Restart and retry the deployment operation.
Driver hunting across hardware pages can mean guessing which of many versions is stale. Outbyte Driver Updater can show driver scan results; installation is performed by the full version, while the hardware manufacturer remains the preferred source for critical deployment drivers.
Why manual DLL downloads usually fail
Do not download tssysprep.dll from a random DLL website or copy it from another computer. That file may contain malware, target the wrong architecture, belong to another Windows build, or require dependencies that do not match your installation. Windows servicing may also overwrite it later.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A 32-bit or 64-bit label alone is not enough. Windows build, edition, servicing state, and component metadata must also match. System32 and SysWOW64 conventions are easy to misread, so do not use a download page’s directory advice as evidence of the correct location.
The supported sources are Windows Update, DISM’s matching repair source, Windows 11’s repair reinstall, and matching Windows installation media.
When the error is from an ordinary application
Record the exact executable and path shown in the error. A normal application should not need to ship its own copy of this Windows Sysprep provider.
If the message appears only when launching one program:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Note the program name and executable path.
- Check whether the reported DLL is in
%WINDIR%System32setup. - Verify the signature of any copy outside the Windows directory.
- Update or repair the application only through its official installer.
- Scan the system if the copy is unsigned or appears in an unexpected folder.
Do not assume that reinstalling the application will provide a legitimate tssysprep.dll. If the Windows copy is damaged, repair Windows itself.
Logs to collect when repair fails
For Sysprep-related failures, inspect:
%WINDIR%System32SysprepPanther
%WINDIR%Panther
Look for:
setupact.log
setuperr.log
Also record:
- The complete error text
- The executable and full path that reported it
- Your Windows edition and build from
winver - DISM’s final result
- SFC’s final result
- Any relevant Windows Security Protection history entry
- Whether the issue began after an update, upgrade, restore, or image deployment
A message that names tssysprep.dll does not prove that the DLL itself is the missing item. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency failed to load. The logs and full path distinguish a Windows servicing failure from an incorrect application attribution.
FAQ
Is tssysprep.dll safe?
The genuine Microsoft file in %WINDIR%System32setup is a Windows Sysprep component. A copy in an application or temporary folder requires separate signature and malware checks.
Is it a Visual C++ or DirectX DLL?
No. It is a Windows Sysprep provider associated with Remote Desktop Session Host operations.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Can I copy it from another Windows PC?
That is unsafe and often ineffective. The other computer may have a different build, architecture, edition, or servicing state. Use DISM, SFC, or matching installation media.
Should I run regsvr32?
Normally no. This is not a conventional COM DLL that needs registration.
What if the error appears while starting a game?
Capture the exact executable and path. The game may be incorrectly reporting a Windows servicing problem, or an untrusted copy may have been placed in its folder. Repair Windows first and verify the application installation separately.
When is a clean installation justified?
Use it only after backups and less destructive repair options have failed, or when the Windows installation is broadly damaged. An in-place repair that keeps files and apps is preferable when it remains available.
