Mononoke No Kuni is planned for Steam in 2027, with combat built around chained attacks, dodges, guards and parries. Its premise gives encounters an emotional angle: the game describes the yokai standing in Taiki and Musashi’s way as beings with sorrowful stories. These are features advertised by the developer and publisher, not gameplay independently verified in a released build.
What is Mononoke No Kuni about?
Developed by Lights-Interactive and published by Happinet, Mononoke No Kuni follows Taiki, a lonely boy whose puppy Musashi dies. After Taiki prays at a shrine, Musashi returns as an Inubashira, described on the official site as a divine canine. Steam identifies Musashi as a Shiba Inu and says Taiki sets out to recover his companion’s stolen soul.
The journey takes the pair into an otherworld populated by mononoke and yokai. The official site sums up their bond with the line, “By your side, even beyond the edge of this world. Never to part.” Happinet’s official game site
How is the battle system supposed to work?
Steam describes a purification action system that lets players chain charge attacks, dodges, guards and parries. The listing also advertises a casual mode and says there is no stamina gauge. Together, those details suggest a combat loop that rewards reacting to enemy attacks and combining offensive and defensive moves, without stamina management as a constraint.

That is an interpretation of the advertised feature set, not a hands-on assessment. The store listing does not establish how forgiving parry timing is, how varied enemy patterns are, or whether the combat remains engaging over a full playthrough. What makes the boss fights sound emotional?
The game’s emotional premise is personal from the outset: Taiki’s adventure begins with the loss of his puppy, and the official descriptions present yokai as beings carrying sorrowful stories. Steam says Taiki uses an ōnusa to soothe souls and return them to Yomi. That framing suggests some encounters may be about understanding or purifying troubled spirits, rather than simply defeating an enemy.

However, the available descriptions do not identify specific bosses or explain how a boss encounter unfolds. “Heart-touching boss fights” is therefore a promise suggested by the story and purification themes, not a confirmed result. Whether those moments land emotionally will depend on the writing, presentation and gameplay in the finished game.
What else can you do beyond combat?
Steam also describes helping mononoke villagers and restoring their settlements. This points to a quieter activity alongside the action, connecting Taiki and Musashi’s progress to communities in the otherworld. The listing does not provide enough detail to establish how village restoration works or how much time it occupies.

Happinet’s official site and the Steam listing currently give a planned 2027 release, with Steam saying the game is not yet available. Steam is the platform listed by the official site. Neither source specifies a launch day or confirmed price; the official site marks MSRP as coming soon. Release timing, availability and price can change.

What is still unknown?
There is no released build or user-review record established on Steam, so the advertised combat and story cannot yet be judged against finished gameplay. The sources also do not confirm a price, editions, or a day-level release date. For now, the clearest reason to watch the game is the combination of reactive action mechanics and a story that gives its supernatural opponents an emotional context.
