What is the Gunlance?

Capcom’s Monster Hunter Generations weapon guide describes it as “A Lance equipped with the ability to fire shells.” The official Monster Hunter Now Gunlance guide likewise emphasizes artillery shots and high defense.
Shelling is the weapon’s defining twist. It gives the Gunlance explosive attacks alongside its conventional close-range fighting, while the shield supports a more guarded approach. Those broad ideas help explain the weapon across the series; they do not mean that its exact move set or resource system is the same in every game.
How does Gunlance work in each game?
Monster Hunter Generations
The Generations manual describes a heat gauge that rises when you fire shells and falls when you use thrusting attacks or let the weapon cool. The gauge can overheat. It also identifies Normal, Long, and Wide shell types, as well as Wyvern’s Fire and Burst Fire as high-potential attacks.

It also describes Guard/Charged Shelling, Burst Fire, and Wyvern’s Fire. The inputs and action sequence belong to the mobile game, so they are not instructions for a console or PC title.
Monster Hunter Wilds
Capcom’s official Wilds weapon showcase presents the Gunlance as a combination of explosions and a staunch shield, and highlights using Focus Mode to exploit weak points. That description establishes the weapon’s broad positioning, but it is not a complete move list or a guide to current balance.
For Wilds controls and move names, check the current in-game Hunter’s Notes. The official showcase alone does not establish exact inputs, current patch behavior, damage values, or a strongest build.

In Wilds, Capcom specifically connects Focus Mode with exploiting weak points. Use the game’s Hunter’s Notes to learn how that feature fits into the current controls rather than assuming that a similarly named action from another entry behaves the same way.
Is Gunlance good for beginners?
It can be approachable for someone who values a shield and clear defensive options, but using it also means learning how your particular game handles shelling and ammunition or other resources. The cited official descriptions establish its defense-and-explosions identity; they do not compare its difficulty with other weapons or prove that it is an objectively easy beginner choice. Try it in your chosen game’s training or practice setting, then consult that title’s Hunter’s Notes for its controls.
