If Monster Hunter Rise freezes, stops responding, or closes with “The software was closed because an error occurred,” work through the checks below before deleting or reinstalling anything. Restart the Switch, update the console and game, check the game data, and then test whether the microSD card is involved. These steps help isolate common software and storage problems; they do not establish one cause or a universal fix for every crash.
Try these checks in order
- Restart the Nintendo Switch. If the console is unresponsive, follow Nintendo’s instructions to force it to power off, then start it again.
- Update the system and game. Check for a Nintendo Switch system update and install any available update for Monster Hunter Rise. Capcom also recommends ensuring the game is fully updated when troubleshooting.
- Check the game’s data for corruption. Use the console’s software-data integrity check. Nintendo and Capcom both include this check in their troubleshooting guidance.
- Test the microSD card if the game closes unexpectedly. Turn the console completely off before removing an inserted card, then try the game. If it works normally without the card, the card or its data may be contributing to the problem; this test does not prove the card is the cause of every crash. For persistent trouble with downloaded software, Nintendo recommends trying system memory instead.
- For a downloaded copy, consider deleting and reinstalling the software or update data. Capcom says its described deletion and reinstallation procedure does not remove save data. Follow the console’s data-management screens carefully: do not choose a separate option to delete save data.
Capcom’s Monster Hunter Rise support page routes general problems starting or operating the game to separate instructions for packaged and downloaded copies. Menu labels and steps can vary by system software version or region, so use the current on-console guidance where wording differs.

When the problem is online connectivity
If the application stays open but you cannot connect or play online, use Capcom’s separate Monster Hunter Rise network and connection troubleshooting for Nintendo Switch. Its guidance emphasizes updating the game and power-cycling the console; connection trouble is a different issue from the software unexpectedly closing.
