Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection is a turn-based monster-raising RPG built around intricate battles and team-building, rather than the real-time hunts of the main series. The reviews point to a strong mechanical foundation, but differ sharply on whether its story and characters make the most of it. Nintendo Life is broadly positive, while PC Gamer finds the war plot and companion writing underdeveloped. Neither review passage assessed gliding specifically, so there is not enough evidence here to call it a highlight—or a weakness.
What kind of Monster Hunter game is it?
Twisted Reflection is a creature-collecting, turn-based RPG in the Monster Hunter setting. You play as a Rider, raising and bonding with monsters, rather than as a conventional hunter pursuing the main series’ real-time hunts. That makes this a spin-off with its own combat and progression focus, not a direct substitute for the action games. Capcom’s franchise announcement reported more than 122 million cumulative Monster Hunter series unit sales as of June 30, 2025; that figure covers the franchise, not this game.

What is the story about?
The official setup centers on two countries, Azuria and Vermeil, twin Rathalos, and a past civil war whose legacy is tied to renewed conflict. Ecological danger adds another stake: the world’s condition is bound up with the political crisis. The premise gives the adventure a larger scale than a simple journey to collect monsters, but the reviewers disagree about how effectively the game dramatizes that scale.

Nintendo Life describes the story as well told and considers it one of the game’s strengths. PC Gamer, by contrast, argues that the war and environmental stakes are weakly delivered and that the companions do not receive enough development. These are distinct critical responses, not a settled consensus: players who value the premise and world may find more to enjoy than players looking for nuanced war storytelling and deeply developed party members.

How do the battles and monster builds work?
Combat and team-building are the clearest shared strengths in the review evidence. PC Gamer describes battles that ask players to weigh attack styles, elemental matchups, weapon types, and monster body parts. Those decisions make encounters more involved than simply choosing the move with the biggest number.
Outside battle, monster genes and the Habitat Restoration system add further layers to developing a team. PC Gamer finds these systems deep and rewarding, while also noting that the amount to consider can be demanding. The result is a game whose appeal depends substantially on enjoying tactical choices and tinkering with a roster, not just on collecting new creatures.

Is it good on Nintendo Switch 2?
Nintendo Life’s Switch 2 review describes performance as functional for a turn-based RPG, but below where it should be. It also reports occasional difficulty spikes. Those findings apply to Nintendo Life’s reviewed Switch 2 version; they should not be treated as performance evidence for PC, PlayStation 5, or Xbox Series X|S.

Can you start with Monster Hunter Stories 3?
Yes. Nintendo Life says newcomers to the Stories series can begin here with confidence. The game includes references for returning fans while accommodating people who are new to the subseries. You do not need prior Stories experience to follow the basic Rider premise or start building a team.
Does gliding make exploration better?
The available review passages do not evaluate gliding, establish how central it is to exploration, or describe how well it works. The title’s gliding angle therefore cannot be confirmed as a strength or a weakness from these reviews. Treat it as an open question rather than a proven reason to buy the game.

| Platform or listing | Details |
|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2, UK listing | Nintendo UK lists a 13 March 2026 release date, a 27.7 GB download size, a PEGI 12 rating, and amiibo compatibility. The listing does not identify compatible figures or their rewards. |
| Steam Deluxe Edition, North American Capcom Town Store | The store lists the Deluxe Edition as released on 13 March 2026. Contents include the base game, Deluxe Kit, character outfits, monster hair, and Rudy outfits. Additional Side Story: Rudy is listed as planned for Autumn 2026; this is a plan, not a confirmed delivery date. |
| Xbox Series X|S | Xbox Wire says the game is available on Xbox Series X|S and that an Xbox trial is available, with progress able to carry into the full game. |
| Xbox on PC | Xbox Wire lists 18 November 2026 as the scheduled release date, with Xbox Play Anywhere support. As of 8 October 2026, that date is upcoming, so the Xbox PC version is not yet available. |
Capcom’s earlier announcement named Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC as planned platforms in a 2026 release window. Because that announcement predates launch, it is less useful for current availability than the later regional listings above.
Verdict
Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection looks most compelling for players who want a turn-based RPG with substantial battle decisions and monster-building. Nintendo Life’s positive account of its story and world is balanced by PC Gamer’s criticism of the narrative delivery and companions, while the Switch 2 review also flags performance shortcomings and difficulty spikes. It is an easier recommendation for tactical team-builders than for players primarily seeking polished war drama—or a gliding showcase, which these reviews do not establish.
