Monster Hunter Wilds Beta Performance: Should PS5 Players Upgrade to PS5 Pro or PC?

Monster Hunter Wilds improved after its beta, but base PS5 still trades image quality for frame rate. Here is whether a PS5 Pro or PC upgrade is worthwhile.

Short answer: do not buy new hardware solely because Monster Hunter Wilds looked rough in its late-2024 beta. The retail PS5 game is improved, but the base console still makes a clear trade-off: Prioritize Resolution targets 30 fps, Balanced targets 40 fps on a 120-Hz display, and Prioritize Framerate targets 60 fps with visibly softer image quality.

A PS5 Pro is the best low-effort console solution for players bothered by that softness. A capable PC can offer more performance and control, but a computer near the minimum requirements may deliver the same kind of compromises. The right choice depends on whether you value simplicity, image stability, adjustable settings, or total cost.

The beta was a warning, not a final verdict. Monster Hunter Wilds was visibly rough during its first public Open Beta Test on PlayStation 5 in late October 2024, with soft image quality, unstable frame-rate behavior, and obvious compromises between visual quality and performance. However, the February 28, 2025 retail release improved on that build, and several later updates changed the picture again.

The upgrade question is now more specific: a base PS5 remains playable, but it still does not consistently deliver both a sharp image and a high frame rate. A PS5 Pro is the simplest console upgrade for cleaner reconstruction and more stable performance. A capable PC can go further with adjustable settings and higher refresh-rate support, but a system near the minimum requirements may reproduce the same compromises that caused the beta controversy.

Why the beta made PS5 owners nervous

Monster Hunter Wilds is a large-scale action game with crowded environments, changing weather, detailed creatures, extensive effects, and demanding combat encounters. In the beta, the technical compromises were easy to notice while playing rather than only in side-by-side screenshots.

Independent analysis of the PS5 beta reported that the performance-oriented mode could dynamically drop to approximately 720p in demanding conditions while targeting 60 frames per second. The quality-oriented mode prioritized resolution and ray-traced effects, but could fall below its 30-fps target in demanding scenes. Those observations do not mean that every player saw exactly the same behavior, but they explain the reaction: the base console appeared unable to provide a consistently sharp image and a consistently high frame rate at the same time.

The softness was not simply a matter of choosing a lower resolution on a settings menu. Low internal resolutions, image reconstruction, texture quality, lighting compromises, and unstable frame pacing all contributed to the impression that the game was struggling. On a large 4K television, those limitations could be especially conspicuous.

That is why some PS5 players began considering a Pro or PC upgrade before launch. The question was not merely whether the beta looked imperfect. It was whether the hardware was already close to a ceiling that patches could not fully remove.

Beta performance and retail performance are not the same thing

Capcom and PlayStation communicated that the full release would include performance improvements. The retail game did improve in several respects, so it would be inaccurate to use beta footage as a direct description of the current console experience.

The game launched on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on February 28, 2025. On the base PS5, the final release introduced three display modes:

PS5 mode Official target or purpose Important limitation
Prioritize Resolution Higher image quality with a 30-fps target Frame-rate drops can still occur during heavy gameplay
Balanced Around 40 fps for displays that support 120 Hz It is display-dependent and independent testing found substantial fluctuation
Prioritize Framerate Aims for 60 fps Internal resolution can become very low, producing a visibly softer image

The retail build therefore softened the beta’s worst-case conclusion without eliminating the underlying trade-off. The base PS5 is better than the beta, but it still asks players to decide which compromise bothers them least.

What the three base-PS5 modes mean in practice

Prioritize Resolution: the clearest base-console image

Prioritize Resolution is the logical choice for players who are most sensitive to blurry textures, shimmering, or reconstruction artifacts. Its 30-fps target allows the game to spend more of its rendering budget on image quality and visual effects.

That does not make it a locked 30-fps mode in every situation. Independent testing found dips during demanding gameplay, so the mode is better described as a quality-focused presentation around a 30-fps target rather than a guarantee of perfect frame pacing.

For a player using a conventional 60-Hz television and who values detail more than responsiveness, this is often the least distracting setting. It is not the best choice for someone who finds 30 fps uncomfortable during combat.

Balanced: the middle ground that requires the right display

Balanced is intended to target 40 fps while preserving more image quality than Prioritize Framerate. It requires a compatible 120-Hz display. A 40-fps signal fits evenly into a 120-Hz refresh cycle, allowing each frame to appear for three display refreshes instead of the uneven cadence that a 40-fps signal would have on a 60-Hz screen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That requirement matters. If the television or monitor is limited to 60 Hz, the Balanced option does not provide its intended benefit. A 120-Hz panel is not a guarantee that the game will hold 40 fps either. Push Square’s extended PS5 and PS5 Pro testing described Balanced performance as fluctuating between roughly 30 and 60 fps in its testing context, despite the mode’s 40-fps design target.

Balanced is consequently best viewed as an experiment for owners of suitable displays, not as a universal solution. Some players will prefer its compromise; others will find the fluctuations more distracting than either a 30-fps quality mode or a softer performance mode.

Prioritize Framerate: smoother motion at the cost of clarity

Prioritize Framerate is aimed at players who want the most responsive controls and smoothest possible presentation on the base PS5. The problem is that independent technical analysis found the mode could rely on very low internal resolutions in demanding conditions.

The result can be a game that moves more fluidly but looks noticeably less defined. Fine details in foliage, terrain, fur, and distant objects may be reconstructed from a smaller internal image. That trade-off is particularly obvious if you sit close to a large 4K television.

This mode is still reasonable if motion clarity and input responsiveness matter more to you than image sharpness. It is also the reason the beta influenced upgrade discussions so strongly: players could see that a 60-fps target was possible only with a substantial visual concession on the base hardware.

What the PS5 Pro actually improves

Monster Hunter Wilds is officially marketed as PS5 Pro enhanced. PlayStation says the Pro version uses the console’s additional ray-tracing capability and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, commonly called PSSR. PlayStation’s PS5 Pro support listings include Wilds, and the company states that all three display modes benefit from improved image quality.

In practical terms, the Pro’s most important benefit is not a simple promise of a higher resolution number. It is cleaner and more stable image reconstruction while the game is operating in a demanding, performance-sensitive environment. Independent PS5 Pro analysis characterized it as the best console version, with more stable performance and cleaner reconstruction than the base PS5, although the game remains demanding.

What PSSR and the Pro’s extra hardware address

  • Cleaner reconstruction: PSSR can make a lower internal render look more stable and detailed than the base console’s reconstruction in comparable conditions.
  • Improved fine detail: Small features such as foliage, terrain detail, and creature surfaces can benefit from more stable image processing.
  • More consistent presentation: The Pro has additional graphics capability available for demanding effects and rendering workloads.
  • Better flexibility across modes: The Pro does not force the player to accept exactly the same image-quality compromise as the base PS5 when pursuing higher frame rates.

Sony announced upgraded PSSR support for Monster Hunter Wilds in March 2026. The company described the updated reconstruction technology as improving image stability, fine-detail clarity, and performance consistency on supported PS5 Pro titles. That makes current Pro results more favorable than launch-era coverage alone suggests. Players should judge the current version with the game and system software fully updated rather than relying only on launch comparisons.

What the PS5 Pro does not guarantee

The Pro should be treated as a quality-of-experience upgrade, not a guarantee that every technical limitation disappears. There is no basis for claiming that it delivers a locked 60 fps in every mode or scene. Nor does official PSSR support establish a universal resolution or frame-rate result for every encounter.

Demanding areas can still put pressure on the game. The Pro’s advantage is that it handles the trade-offs more gracefully, especially for players who dislike the blurry appearance of the base PS5’s performance mode. It does not turn every visual or engine limitation into a non-issue.

For an existing PlayStation owner who wants the least disruptive upgrade, the PlayStation 5 Pro console is the most straightforward choice. You keep the same platform and controller ecosystem while gaining the version most directly optimized around Wilds’ image-quality problem.

When a PC upgrade is the better answer

PC is the more flexible alternative, but it is also the less predictable one. A sufficiently powerful system can offer higher frame rates, adjustable graphics settings, high-refresh-rate support, and a path to future upgrades. A marginal system can instead deliver low internal resolutions, uneven frame times, and the same general compromises seen on console.

Official PC requirements

Steam lists the following minimum configuration:

Component Minimum listing What Steam expects
CPU Intel Core i5-10400, Intel Core i3-12100, or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 1080p output upscaled from 720p at 30 fps on the lowest preset
Memory 16 GB RAM
GPU NVIDIA GTX 1660 with 6 GB VRAM or AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT with 8 GB VRAM
API DirectX 12
Storage SSD required

Capcom’s recommended configuration keeps the same listed CPU and memory class but raises the graphics recommendation to an NVIDIA RTX 2060 Super or AMD Radeon RX 6600. Steam’s recommended expectation is 1080p at 60 fps with frame generation enabled at medium settings.

That last detail is easy to overlook. The recommended 1080p/60 expectation is not the same as a guarantee of native 1080p rendering at 60 fps. Frame generation is part of the stated expectation, and the result can vary with the game’s underlying frame rate, CPU workload, driver version, settings, and scene complexity.

Do not interpret the minimum requirements as an upgrade target

A computer that technically meets the minimum specification is not necessarily a comfortable replacement for a PS5 Pro. The minimum listing itself expects a 720p internal image upscaled to 1080p at 30 fps on the lowest preset. That is a baseline for running the game, not a promise of the sharp, smooth experience that motivated the upgrade discussion.

Likewise, buying only an RTX 2060 Super graphics card does not guarantee a particular result. The recommended GPU tier must be considered alongside CPU performance, available VRAM, memory, storage, resolution, frame-generation preferences, and the rest of the system. The Radeon RX 6600 is the comparable AMD class in the official listing, but neither GPU by itself represents a complete PC upgrade.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

CPU performance deserves particular attention. Later PC testing found that updates improved 1% lows and frame-time stability on both higher- and lower-end configurations, but results continued to depend heavily on CPU performance. A powerful graphics card cannot fully compensate for a processor that becomes the bottleneck in crowded areas or during heavy simulation workloads.

The SSD requirement is functional, not cosmetic

Steam lists an SSD as required rather than optional. If an existing computer still uses a hard disk for game storage, moving the installation to a suitable NVMe SSD may be a necessary part of the upgrade plan, subject to the motherboard’s interface, available slot, capacity, and compatibility.

Storage alone will not solve a CPU or GPU bottleneck, and an SSD should not be marketed as a performance cure. Its relevance here is that the official PC configuration expects SSD storage, so a complete system assessment must include it rather than comparing graphics cards in isolation.

Post-launch updates changed the PC recommendation

Beta-era PC discussions also need to be dated. Capcom announced a multi-stage stability and performance plan that included CPU and GPU optimization for all platforms in Title Update 4, a Steam-exclusive patch in late January 2026 with additional CPU and GPU controls and reduced processing-load options, and further improvements in the February 2026 update.

Subsequent testing reported better 1% lows, more stable frame times, and meaningful gains on both higher- and lower-end configurations. That does not make every PC configuration equally good. Settings, drivers, CPU capability, GPU headroom, and resolution still matter, and results can vary considerably from one system to another.

The important change is that PC is now a stronger alternative than the beta-era narrative implied. Someone who already owns a capable gaming PC should not assume that the beta’s worst footage describes the current experience. At the same time, someone building a new computer solely for Wilds should not treat the minimum or recommended listing as a universal frame-rate guarantee.

PS5 Pro versus PC: which upgrade makes sense?

Your situation Better fit Why
You already own a PS5 and want a simple improvement PS5 Pro It provides the most direct platform upgrade, with official PSSR support and a cleaner, more consistent console presentation.
You are highly sensitive to blurry performance-mode imagery PS5 Pro or a capable PC The base PS5’s 60-fps-oriented mode can be visibly soft; both alternatives offer more room to improve image quality, although PC requires tuning.
You already own a PC comfortably above the official requirements PC You can use adjustable settings, higher refresh rates, and future hardware upgrades without buying another console.
You are building a new system from scratch Compare total cost carefully A full PC includes the CPU, GPU, memory, storage, case, power supply, operating system considerations, and possibly peripherals. The comparison is not just a GPU price versus a console price.
You have a 120-Hz display and accept a compromise Try Balanced on base PS5 first It is the retail mode designed around 40 fps, but testing has found fluctuations and it is not intended for a standard 60-Hz display.
You are satisfied with a softer 60-fps presentation Stay on base PS5 The retail game is improved over the beta, and an upgrade is difficult to justify if its image-quality trade-off does not bother you.

Recommendation by player type

Stay on the base PS5 if the beta was concerning but not unbearable

Do not upgrade automatically because the beta looked rough. The retail release and later patches are not identical to the test build. If you already own the game, update it and try all three display modes on your own television.

Choose Prioritize Resolution if image sharpness matters most, Prioritize Framerate if responsive motion matters most, and Balanced only if you have a compatible 120-Hz display and are comfortable with a middle-ground result. This is the sensible path for players who are not especially sensitive to reconstruction artifacts.

Choose PS5 Pro if you want the lowest-friction improvement

The Pro is the strongest recommendation for an existing PlayStation player who wants better image stability without moving to PC. Its official PSSR and ray-tracing enhancements directly address the visual compromises that made the beta look poor, and independent testing has generally placed it above the base console.

It is most compelling when the alternative is building or buying a full PC. It is less compelling if you already accept the base PS5’s performance mode, play on a smaller display, or would need to buy the Pro solely for one game. Also remember that Pro support is not the same as a locked frame-rate guarantee.

Move to PC if you already have the hardware for it

PC is the better destination for players who value control over settings, high-refresh-rate output, and upgradeability. The case is particularly strong if your current system is comfortably above the official requirements and has enough CPU headroom for the game’s heavier scenes.

Do not make the move based on a minimum-specification machine. If the new system is likely to run near the minimum target, you may simply exchange the base PS5’s compromises for PC-specific tuning work. A PC upgrade should be judged against the experience you want—resolution, frame rate, frame-generation acceptance, and frame-time consistency—not merely whether the game launches.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wait before buying hardware if you have not bought the game

If you have not purchased it yet, buying Monster Hunter Wilds PS5 and testing the updated retail version on the base console may be more rational than upgrading based on beta footage alone. The game’s current performance is better characterized by the post-launch build and its updates than by the first public test.

Conversely, if you already know that soft image reconstruction will ruin the experience for you, waiting to buy the game until you have chosen a Pro or a capable PC is reasonable. The beta revealed a real quality-versus-performance problem; it simply did not prove that every retail version would have the same severity.

A practical upgrade checklist

  1. Update before judging: Install the latest game, console, and system updates. Current PS5 Pro and PC behavior should not be evaluated using launch-era assumptions.
  2. Identify your display: A 120-Hz panel is required to make the base PS5’s Balanced mode relevant. On a 60-Hz display, compare Resolution and Framerate modes instead.
  3. Decide what bothers you: If blur and reconstruction artifacts are the main problem, prioritize hardware with better image reconstruction. If responsiveness is the priority, compare frame-time behavior rather than screenshots.
  4. Audit a PC as a complete system: Check the CPU, GPU, VRAM, 16 GB memory requirement, DirectX 12 support, and SSD storage together. Do not buy a graphics card in isolation.
  5. Account for frame generation: The official recommended PC expectation includes frame generation. Decide whether that presentation is acceptable before treating 1080p/60 as your target.
  6. Compare total costs: For a new PC, include every required component and any peripherals. A PS5 Pro is more expensive than a base console, but it is also a fixed, simpler platform; a PC offers more flexibility but more variables.
  7. Use current evidence: Date any benchmark or comparison you read. Wilds received multiple optimization updates across 2025 and 2026, so beta and launch testing should not be treated as current universal measurements.

Final verdict

The beta exposed a genuine weakness in the base PS5 version of Monster Hunter Wilds: players could pursue a sharper image around 30 fps, a 40-fps compromise that required a 120-Hz display, or a softer mode targeting 60 fps. That was enough to make a hardware upgrade seem necessary, but the beta was not the final game.

As of August 12, 2026, the base PS5 remains a reasonable choice for players who accept those trade-offs. The PS5 Pro is the best low-friction console upgrade and the clearest answer to complaints about blurry performance-mode imagery, particularly with the game’s newer PSSR support. PC is potentially the strongest technical option, but only for systems with meaningful headroom above the minimum requirements and for players willing to manage settings and platform variability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not upgrade because the beta was bad in isolation. Upgrade to a PS5 Pro if you want a cleaner, simpler console experience; choose PC if you already have—or genuinely want to build—a capable, tunable system; otherwise, play the updated retail version on your base PS5 and choose the mode that matches your priorities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Monster Hunter Wilds beta representative of the final PS5 game?

No. The retail game launched on February 28, 2025 with performance improvements and three PS5 display modes. Later updates further changed performance, so beta footage should be treated as an early warning rather than a direct measurement of the current game.

Does PS5 Pro run Monster Hunter Wilds at a locked 60 fps?

No. PS5 Pro support improves image quality and reconstruction through PSSR and uses the console’s additional ray-tracing capability, but official support does not guarantee a locked 60 fps in every mode or scene.

Do you need a 120-Hz TV for the base PS5’s Balanced mode?

Yes, the Balanced mode is designed around a 40-fps target for compatible 120-Hz displays. It is not intended for a standard 60-Hz television, and independent testing found that performance can fluctuate rather than holding a perfect 40 fps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a minimum-spec PC run Monster Hunter Wilds at 60 fps?

Not necessarily. Steam’s minimum configuration expects 1080p output upscaled from 720p at 30 fps on the lowest preset. The recommended listing expects 1080p/60 at medium settings with frame generation enabled, but actual results depend on the complete system, settings, drivers, and scene complexity.

Is a PC upgrade better than buying a PS5 Pro for Monster Hunter Wilds?

A PC is the better choice for an existing owner of a system comfortably above the recommended class who wants adjustable settings and higher refresh-rate support. A PS5 Pro is the simpler option for a PlayStation owner who wants improved image quality without building or tuning a computer.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Monster Hunter Wilds is substantially more compelling on PS5 Pro than the beta-era footage suggested, but the Pro does not guarantee a locked 60 fps. Stay on base PS5 if you can accept its mode trade-offs; choose PC only when your full system is comfortably above the minimum requirements and you value tuning flexibility.
