If Monster Hunter Wilds crashes on your Steam Deck, update SteamOS and the game, restart the Deck, temporarily disable third-party plugins such as Decky, then test the latest Proton version in the game’s Compatibility settings. If it reaches gameplay before becoming unstable, reduce graphics settings and check whether the High Resolution Texture Pack is installed. These steps address common troubleshooting possibilities, but no single fix is established for every crash.
Start by identifying when the crash happens
Before changing settings, note whether the game closes before its splash screen, during startup or shader compilation, or after gameplay begins. Copy any error text exactly. Also record your Steam Deck model (LCD or OLED), SteamOS and game versions, selected Proton version, available storage, and whether Decky or other plugins or system modifications are installed. There is no established single cause for an individual crash without these details.
Work through the fixes in order
1. Update SteamOS and the game, then restart
Install any available SteamOS and game updates, then restart the Deck. Valve recommends updates and a restart as initial steps for system instability. Its Steam Deck Software Info & Troubleshooting Guide also recommends disabling third-party applications when they may affect apps running on the Deck.
2. Temporarily disable Decky and other plugins
If you use Decky or another third-party plugin, disable it temporarily and restart before testing the game again. This is a reversible way to check whether an added component is involved; it is not a proven general fix. A 2025 Steam community discussion includes one user who attributed a startup crash to Decky Loader and reported improvement after disabling or updating it, but other comments are inconsistent. Treat that as an individual report, not an official diagnosis. Do not begin with a factory reset.

- 1TB NVMe SSD
- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
3. Test a different Proton version
- Open the game in your Steam Library.
- Open Properties > Compatibility.
- Enable the option to force a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, then select the latest Proton version available and test the game.
Valve’s guide says to try the latest Proton version. A SteamDB record accessed on 8 October 2026 lists Proton Experimental as the recommended runtime for this game. That record reports a compatibility test dated 13 August 2026; it is a dated snapshot, not a guarantee that this runtime will prevent every crash or remain the best choice after later updates. If the current selection fails, Proton Experimental is one reasonable version to test.
4. Reduce graphics load if the game reaches gameplay
If the game launches but crashes or becomes unstable during play, lower the graphics preset or individual graphics settings, then test again. Valve includes reducing graphics load among its general Steam Deck troubleshooting options.

5. Check for the High Resolution Texture Pack
Capcom warns that the High Resolution Texture Pack may cause instability without sufficient graphics memory. Its guidance requires at least 16 GB of graphics memory for the pack; that is PC guidance, not a Steam Deck-specific threshold. If you installed it, open the game’s Properties > DLC in Steam, disable the pack, and restart Steam before testing. Capcom’s Customer Service Center hosts troubleshooting information, but Windows instructions should not automatically be assumed to apply unchanged to SteamOS.
What the Verified badge and PC requirements do—and do not—tell you
SteamDB’s record, accessed 8 October 2026, reports Monster Hunter Wilds as Steam Deck Verified based on a test dated 13 August 2026. Valve defines Verified as working well out of the box under its compatibility criteria, which cover input, display, seamlessness, and system support, including Proton and middleware. The badge is useful compatibility context, but it does not promise crash-free operation on every Deck configuration or after every game, SteamOS, or Proton update. Valve distinguishes Verified from Playable, which may require manual changes; see its Steam Deck Verified page.

The Steam listing’s requirements describe Windows PC configurations, not Steam Deck support requirements. It lists Windows 10/11 64-bit, 16 GB RAM, an Intel Core i5-10400, Core i3-12100, or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 processor, a GTX 1660 6 GB or RX 5500 XT 8 GB minimum graphics card, DirectX 12, broadband, an SSD, and 75 GB of available storage. Its stated minimum target is 30 fps at 1080p upscaled from 720p on the Lowest setting. These figures provide context for the PC version; they do not establish a Deck-specific memory threshold or explain a particular Deck crash. The listing is on Steam.

Contact Steam Support or Capcom if the steps above do not resolve the problem. Include the crash stage and exact error text, SteamOS and game versions, Proton selection, Deck model, plugin status, available storage, and the steps you have already tried. Valve advises contacting Steam Support when troubleshooting does not resolve an issue; Capcom provides troubleshooting and support contact options through its Customer Service Center. Community discussions may mention launch options, but user reports are inconsistent and at least one proposed option reportedly did not work, so they are not a reliable standard fix.
