If Monster Hunter Wilds is lagging or disconnecting during multiplayer on PS5, first check PlayStation Network status and note any exact error code. Then test your connection methodically: compare sessions and players, restart your network equipment and console, reduce other network activity briefly, and try Ethernet if you currently use Wi-Fi. These steps can help isolate common connection problems, but Capcom says its general PS5 guidance cannot guarantee a fix, and it does not establish that every Wilds multiplayer issue has the same cause.
First, work out what “lag” means in your hunt
Players may use “lag” to describe delayed or rubber-banding hunters, a communication error, a dropped session, or low frame rate and stuttering. The steps below address network connection problems. They cannot establish that visual stutter or low frame rate is caused by the network.

Before changing settings, note what happened and when: whether the game showed an error code, whether you were joining or already in a hunt, and whether the issue affected one session or several. This gives you a useful point of comparison as you troubleshoot.

Capcom’s general PS5 connection guidance recommends checking for PlayStation Network outages or maintenance first. If an error code appears, look up that exact code in PlayStation Support and follow the instructions for it. A service interruption or a code-specific platform issue changes what is useful to try next.

Compare the affected sessions and games
Try to identify whether the problem follows one particular session, one multiplayer partner, or Wilds across multiple sessions. If it happens only with one player, Capcom notes that the other player’s connection or compatibility between the two connections may be involved. That is a possibility to test, not proof that either person is at fault.
- If you can, compare a hunt with another player or group.
- Check whether other online games on the same PS5 have connection problems.
- Note whether the issue is a disconnect, delayed movement, or visual stutter; those symptoms do not necessarily share a cause.
Test the local network before changing advanced settings
Restart the modem, router, and PS5
Close Wilds, restart the PS5, and power-cycle the internet equipment, such as the modem or ONU and router. After restarting the equipment, allow it time to reconnect before testing another hunt. Capcom recommends restarting equipment as a general PS5 troubleshooting step; it may help with some connection problems but is not a guaranteed Wilds fix.

Temporarily reduce competing network activity
For one test, pause heavy downloads or other online activity on devices sharing your connection. Capcom says multiple devices using the same connection can contribute to unstable communications. Treat this as a diagnostic comparison, not a reason to permanently disconnect other people or devices in your household.
Try Ethernet if you play over Wi-Fi
If your PS5 currently uses Wi-Fi and you can connect it to your router, test a wired connection with an Ethernet cable. Capcom says wired networking may be more stable than wireless. The support guidance does not specify a required cable category, brand, or speed.

Check for Wilds and PS5 updates
- Check for a game update: Highlight Monster Hunter Wilds on the PS5 home screen, press the Options button, and select Check for Update.
- Check the installed system software version: Open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information.
PlayStation provides these steps for checking updates; it does not say that updating alone will resolve multiplayer lag.
Investigate router, NAT, and ISP issues cautiously
Capcom’s general PS5 guide identifies router filtering, NAT configuration, and ISP stability as possible factors in PSN multiplayer connectivity. It says NAT Type 3 may affect PSN internet multiplayer. To view the console’s network status, use Settings > Network > Connection Status > View Connection Status.

The guide lists these ports for PSN: TCP 80, 443, 3478, 3479, and 3480; UDP 3478 and 3479. These are general PSN configuration values, not verified Monster Hunter Wilds-specific port requirements. Do not disable a firewall, place the PS5 in a DMZ, or make broad router security changes based only on this list. If you do not understand a router setting, ask the router manufacturer or your ISP for guidance.

Capcom’s official Wilds support page points players to Wilds help resources, but the available official guidance does not confirm a specific, currently acknowledged Wilds PS5 multiplayer defect or a single game-specific fix. Capcom’s connection recommendations are general PS5 troubleshooting, and outcomes depend on the player’s network environment.
