Monster Hunter Wilds has had real, varied PC performance problems, and Capcom has acknowledged that its internal testing missed issues players encountered on different setups. Capcom delivered performance work in stages, including a Steam-specific update in January 2026 and further improvements in version 1.041 during February. Those changes address CPU load, shader warming and VRAM use, among other things—but they are not proof that every PC now runs the game smoothly.

Why has Monster Hunter Wilds been running badly on PC?

There is no single cause that explains every report of poor performance. A PC can be held back by CPU load, graphics settings, limited VRAM, drivers, power configuration or the game itself. Capcom acknowledged the gap between its testing and players’ experience: its performance roadmap said, “These tests failed to capture the wide variety of issues experienced by players across their unique setups.”

That matters when diagnosing symptoms. A graphics card upgrade may not resolve a CPU bottleneck, and lowering resolution alone may not address a problem caused by shader work or a configuration issue. The game’s published PC requirements are a useful baseline, but they are not a guarantee of a particular player’s results.

What PC specs does Monster Hunter Wilds list?

Steam’s published requirements specify the following configurations and expected targets. Treat the frame-rate figures as Steam’s stated expectations, not independent benchmark results or promises for every system.

Stated target 1080p upscaled from 720p native resolution at 30 fps on Lowest settings 1080p at 60 fps with Frame Generation enabled on Medium settings

The recommended target explicitly relies on Frame Generation and Medium settings; it should not be read as a 60 fps guarantee with Frame Generation off or at higher settings. If a system is below minimum specifications, meeting the listed requirements still does not establish that a particular cause of stutter has been fixed.

What did Capcom change to improve performance?

Capcom described optimization as a series of updates rather than one universal fix. Its roadmap for Free Title Update 4 included spreading heavy work for players, monsters and the user interface across frames, streamlining effects and collision processes, and reducing memory use. The roadmap also cautioned that results vary with PC configuration and other factors.

Capcom then published Steam update 1.040.03.01 on January 28, 2026 UTC. The announcement described Steam-specific work aimed at CPU and GPU performance and VRAM use. It also added a CPU settings tab with controls for endemic life display count, the number of lobby players displayed, small-monster quality, effect quality and animation quality.

  • Shader warming: Capcom reduced shader warming outside the shader compilation screen.
  • VRAM and textures: It adjusted texture streaming and the high-resolution texture pack to reduce VRAM use.
  • CPU workload: The new settings let players reduce selected display and quality workloads, including effects and animations.

The roadmap also described a further set of improvements in version 1.041 during February 2026. The update sequence is evidence that Capcom worked on performance over multiple releases; it does not establish that all reported issues were resolved on all hardware.

What was the Base Camp and Grand Hub CPU-load issue?

Capcom confirmed a specific CPU-load problem around the Support Desk in Base Camp and the Grand Hub. Its explanation was that checks for claimed content could increase CPU load. The size of the frame-rate drop depended on the amount of unclaimed content and could also depend on CPU performance.

Capcom explicitly said the number of DLCs owned did not affect this issue. The relevant distinction is unclaimed content, not how many DLCs a player has purchased; the update note does not support the claim that buying DLC improves performance.

How can you troubleshoot stuttering or low performance?

Start with checks that do not assume the graphics card is the only bottleneck. Capcom’s official troubleshooting guidance recommends updating Windows and graphics drivers, checking that the game uses the discrete high-performance GPU on systems with both integrated and discrete graphics, and checking power settings on laptops.

  1. Confirm the game and system are up to date. Install available Windows and graphics-driver updates. Driver recommendations in a particular patch note are dated and may be superseded; do not treat the January 2026 driver versions as current guidance indefinitely.
  2. Check GPU selection. On a dual-GPU system, make sure Monster Hunter Wilds is assigned to the discrete, high-performance GPU rather than an integrated graphics processor.
  3. Check laptop power behavior. Review the laptop’s power settings and connect its charger while playing, as Capcom recommends.
  4. Reduce CPU-heavy options if CPU load appears limiting. Use the CPU settings tab to try lower endemic life display count, fewer displayed lobby players, or lower small-monster, effect or animation quality. Change settings one at a time so you can tell which adjustment helps.
  5. Check graphics and VRAM demands. If high-resolution textures or demanding texture settings coincide with problems, try reducing those demands. Capcom says it adjusted texture streaming and the high-resolution texture pack to reduce VRAM use, but that does not make every GPU’s memory capacity sufficient for every setting.
  6. If driver updating does not help, consider a clean driver installation. Capcom’s support guidance suggests this as a troubleshooting step. It is not a guaranteed fix for a game-side limitation.

Capcom notes that some high-end integrated GPUs and modern laptop-class GPUs have not been tested or are not officially supported. A system that appears powerful by a broad product label therefore may not have an official support guarantee for this game.

Do the updates mean performance is fixed now?

No universal conclusion is supported. TechRadar’s January 29, 2026 report found improved 1% lows and VRAM use in its tests on specific desktop and handheld systems, while warning against assuming large frame-rate gains. Those results describe the outlet’s tested hardware, not every PC or a representative survey of players.

Monster Hunter Wilds released on Steam on February 27, 2025. Steam’s requirements, Capcom’s dated patch notes and individual outlet testing answer different questions: requirements describe stated targets, patch notes describe intended changes, and a review test describes its own machines. None alone establishes how the game performs on your specific configuration.
