Digital Foundry’s February 24, 2025 analysis compared the PS5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S versions of Monster Hunter Wilds, focusing on their graphics modes and performance. Its launch-era findings described image-quality shortcomings alongside frame-rate modes that generally met their targets, and a smoother-looking VRR experience on Xbox Series X than PS5. These are not current benchmark results: later updates included performance changes, but no controlled post-update PS5 and Xbox comparison is established here.
What Digital Foundry’s console analysis covered
Digital Foundry’s February 24, 2025 review compared graphics modes and performance on PS5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S. The listing said a separate PS5 Pro analysis would follow. Notebookcheck’s account identifies the modes discussed as Prioritize Resolution, Balanced, and Prioritize Framerate. Digital Foundry’s review listing and Notebookcheck’s February 24, 2025 report provide the available detail.

The findings below describe the launch-era console versions, not a fresh test of the game in October 2026. The game released on February 28, 2025 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, with crossplay, according to Capcom.

How the launch-era graphics modes traded image quality for speed
Notebookcheck reported that the selected modes generally met their frame-rate targets. It summarized Prioritize Framerate as offering a 60 fps cap, while higher-quality modes could run at 30 fps or 40 fps. That summary does not assign each target to every console, mode, or test condition, so it should not be treated as a universal platform-by-platform specification.

- This product contains a download code inside the box — no disc is included. Customer shipments will begin arriving November 12 for pre-load; game is playable starting November 19.
- Pre-order to receive the Vintage Vice City Pack.
- Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience.
- Prioritize Framerate: The reported 60 fps cap makes this the speed-focused option. The summary does not establish that every scene holds 60 fps on every console.
- Balanced and Prioritize Resolution: Notebookcheck reported that higher-quality modes could run at 30 fps or 40 fps, but did not provide a complete mapping of targets to consoles and conditions. These modes favor visual quality over the highest reported cap.
Digital Foundry’s reported criticisms included blurry or pixelated textures, muted or uneven lighting, grainy-looking maps, and reflections. Those image-quality complaints coexisted with modes that generally met their targets; hitting a frame-rate target does not, by itself, make the image crisp or visually consistent. Notebookcheck also said the console game ran considerably better than the open beta.
What the analysis said about VRR and motion
Notebookcheck reported that low-frame-rate compensation (LFC) seemed to be absent on PS5, which could contribute to occasional choppiness. It described VRR as faring better on Xbox Series X, where rendering appeared smoother. The PS5 LFC point is qualified: the report said it seemed absent, not that it established a universal result for every display and scene.

VRR can make supported displays present fluctuating frame delivery more smoothly, but it does not raise the game’s frame rate or repair its image quality. The reported Xbox advantage applies to Xbox Series X and a VRR-capable display; it does not mean every Xbox owner has VRR support, nor does the report establish the same advantage for Series S. Check both console and display compatibility before relying on VRR.

What changed after launch—and what remains unverified
Windows Central reported on February 18, 2026 that update Ver.1.041.00.00 brought further performance enhancements for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5. Its account listed reduced CPU and GPU processing load, model LOD adjustments, optimized monster and endemic-life spawn processing, effect caching, and rendering optimizations. The official Capcom patch-note link was not available in that report’s accessible material, so these details are attributed to Windows Central rather than independently verified here.

Windows Central’s writer briefly tested the Xbox version and observed Balanced Mode around 30–40 fps and Performance Mode more consistently at 60 fps than in prior patches. That is an individual, limited observation—not a controlled comparison, a guarantee across scenes, or evidence about the current behavior of every console mode. No controlled current PS5-versus-Xbox comparison is established by the available reporting, so the February 2025 findings should not be presented as the game’s definitive performance state in October 2026. See Windows Central’s update report for its account of the patch and Xbox impressions.

- If motion smoothness is your priority: The launch-era reporting points to Prioritize Framerate as the mode with a 60 fps cap. Treat that as a cap, not a promise that every scene sustains 60 fps.
- If image quality matters more: Balanced and Prioritize Resolution are the higher-quality options identified in the coverage, but the reported texture, lighting, map, and reflection criticisms remain relevant to the launch-era assessment.
- If you use Xbox Series X with VRR: Notebookcheck described smoother rendering with VRR on that console. The benefit depends on having a compatible display and does not increase the game’s frame rate.
- If you are comparing consoles today: Do not use this 2025 comparison alone as a current ranking. The 2026 update report indicates further changes, but its Xbox observations were brief and do not settle current PS5-versus-Xbox performance.
For context on the game’s reach, Capcom reported more than 10 million Monster Hunter Wilds units sold worldwide by March 31, 2025. It separately reported more than 108 million cumulative sales for the Monster Hunter series as of December 31, 2024; that franchise-wide figure is not sales of Wilds.
