This is an editorial ranking of all 12 Monster Train 2 clans for standard runs, weighing how reliably each can lead a deck, what it contributes as an ally, how it handles frontline and backline threats, and how much setup it needs. It is a practical starting point—not an objective win-rate chart or a promise of success. Pairings, champion choices, balance updates, difficulty, and player skill can all change a clan’s value.

How to read this tier list

The placements below use the February 6, 2026 guide from Pro Game Guides as a baseline, then explain what a player should consider when choosing a clan. That guide ranks clans partly by primary-clan performance, power, and difficulty; it is one published opinion, not a settled community consensus. Community rankings vary, and the evidence here does not establish a controlled comparison or precise clan win rates.

Assume standard runs rather than a specific high-difficulty or DLC challenge. A clan that is awkward as the main clan can still be a useful ally, and a clan that excels with one champion or pairing may be less dependable when the run does not provide the needed pieces. Evaluate each choice on five axes: primary-clan reliability, allied-clan value, answers to heavy and backline enemies, setup consistency, and fit for the mode and difficulty you plan to play.

The current roster has 12 clans. Railforged arrived as DLC with Destiny of the Railforged on February 2, 2026, while Wurmkin returned in the same release as part of a free base-game update, according to the official Steam announcement.

S tier: strongest starting points in the published baseline

Melting Remnant

The baseline places Melting Remnant in S. It is a strong candidate when you want a clan that can anchor a run, but a tier placement cannot tell you whether a particular champion, card selection, or partner will make your run dependable. Consider how much the strategy you are offered relies on a specific setup before treating the high placement as a reason to commit.

Underlegion

Underlegion also sits in S in the February 2026 guide. That makes it another sensible starting choice if you want to explore the guide’s highest-ranked options. Its placement is not evidence that every pairing or run will be easy; judge its contribution alongside your allied clan and the threats your developing deck can answer.

A tier: strong options with pairing and setup caveats

Lazarus League

Lazarus League is in A on the published list, but one experienced player’s self-reported ranking put it first. That player considered both main- and allied-clan use, answers to heavy and backline enemies, and how much a clan demands an all-in build; they also said positions three through nine could be rearranged. This is a useful reminder that Lazarus League’s perceived strength can rise substantially under different assumptions, not a controlled result proving it is the best clan.

Luna Coven

Luna Coven lands in A in the guide. Treat that as a favorable overall recommendation rather than a guarantee of consistency: assess whether the cards and champion you encounter support a coherent plan, and whether your partner fills gaps in threat coverage.

Banished

Banished is also ranked A. It is a strong option to try as either a lead or a partner, but the ranking alone does not establish that it independently solves every threat profile. Check how the emerging deck handles both durable enemies and vulnerable backline units before relying on the tier label.

Railforged

Railforged appears in A in the February 6 guide. It is the newest clan in this roster, introduced through the February 2, 2026 DLC release. Because release context and balance changes can affect a ranking’s shelf life, treat this placement as a dated snapshot rather than a permanent verdict.

B tier: capable clans that may need a better fit

Wurmkin

Wurmkin is in B in the baseline. Its return in the free update makes it part of the current 12-clan roster, but a mid-tier placement should not rule it out as an ally or in a pairing that supports its plan. Your deck’s actual answers to large enemies and backline units matter more than a letter grade.

Hellhorned

Hellhorned also receives B. The guide’s position is a judgment about its overall ranking criteria, not proof that it is weak in all combinations. Consider it in light of your champion and partner, especially if those choices make up for gaps in your developing deck.

Pyreborne

Pyreborne is the third B-tier clan in the published list. Use it as a viable option rather than assuming it is either a poor choice or a dependable top-tier lead in every run; the pairing and the cards you see determine how well its strategy covers the encounter.

C tier: lower baseline ranking, not an unusable clan

Awoken

Awoken is placed in C. That makes it a lower-ranked primary-clan choice under the guide’s criteria, but says less about its value as a supporting clan. If you prefer Awoken or find a promising pairing, assess the full deck plan rather than rejecting it on the tier alone.

Stygian Guard

Stygian Guard is also in C. The published ranking suggests more caution as a default pick, not that the clan cannot work. Its practical value depends on whether the other clan and the run’s available cards provide the missing pieces for reliable threat coverage.

D tier: the most conditional primary-clan pick in this list

Umbra

Umbra is the sole D-tier placement in the February 2026 guide, making it the most conditional choice if you are following that guide as a primary-clan ranking. A low primary ranking does not establish that Umbra contributes nothing as an ally, nor that a player cannot build an effective run around it. Choose it for a plan you want to pursue, not because the tier label predicts your individual result.

Why tier lists disagree

There is no official public power ranking to settle these placements. In a PC Gamer interview, Shiny Shoe described clan win rates as broadly similar, saying, “You would be surprised at how most of the clans have a similar win rate despite how varied their playstyles are!” The interview supplied no exact comparative figures. The studio also said it generally avoids publicly naming the strongest and weakest clans because doing so could steer player choices and affect results.

Community discussion reinforces the limits of a single ranking. A Steam thread titled “So how would we rank the clans now there are 2 new ones” and a Reddit discussion asking “How to pick which clans to use?” show the kinds of questions players ask, but they are not statistical evidence. The 900-hour player’s ranking is likewise one person’s analysis, not a controlled test. Rankings can change with the assumed difficulty, whether a clan is judged as a lead or an ally, and how much setup a player is willing to accept.

Choosing a clan for your next run

  1. Decide what you want to test. If you want a straightforward starting point, try one of the baseline’s S-tier clans. If you want to explore a different style, do not let a lower tier disqualify a clan you are interested in.
  2. Judge the pair, not just the lead. Ask what your allied clan adds and whether the combination has answers for heavy enemies and vulnerable backliners.
  3. Check the setup burden. Notice whether your plan depends on a particular champion, a narrow selection of cards, or committing heavily to one mechanic. A powerful ceiling is less helpful when the run does not produce the pieces it needs.
  4. Match the ranking to your mode. The placements here are a standard-run editorial reference, not a tested ordering for every difficulty or DLC challenge.
  5. Revisit after balance changes. The ranking reflects a guide updated February 6, 2026; later changes can alter the relative value of clans.
