Moonscars is a single-player 2D action game built around punishing combat, nonlinear exploration and a striking dark-fantasy world. Reviews are favorable overall, especially about its visual identity and combat, but the game’s opaque systems, uneven balance and sharp late-game difficulty make it a better fit for players who enjoy demanding action-platformers than for those seeking a clear, forgiving adventure.
What kind of game is Moonscars?
Developed by Black Mermaid, Moonscars follows Grey Irma, a clayborne warrior searching for the Sculptor and the truth of her existence. Its core loop combines sword combat, parries, special weapons and Witchery with exploration through a nonlinear world. Death is part of the design: as Steam puts it, “In Moonscars, every death is a lesson learnt—and as you overcome each challenge, new truths will be revealed.”

The game uses painterly environments and pixel-art styling to create a bleak, atmospheric dark-fantasy setting. Steam categorizes it as Action and Indie, and its community tags include Metroidvania, Souls-like, 2D platformer and difficult. Those tags are useful shorthand for the experience, not a definitive genre classification.
What do reviews praise?
Distinctive art and atmosphere
Visual identity is one of the clearest points of agreement in the cited criticism. Screen Rant’s review describes the visuals as gorgeous and the clayborne world as fascinating; NME also praises the art style. The bleak presentation helps give the world a character beyond its combat challenges.
#1 Best Overall
- Death shapes you: Before you rise, you first must fall. Mold yourself into a master warrior through a cycle of trial and triumph
- A grimly gorgeous world: Explore the shadows and secrets concealed in the moonlight of a painterly nonlinear 2D realm marred by desperation and despair
- Test your resolve: Sharpen your skills and reflexes in challenging, action-packed combat. Slash and parry with your sword, wield unique special weapons, and command powerful Witchery
- The Moon hungers: Unearth a strange, dark fantasy tale filled with twists and intricate worldbuilding. Seek the truth of your creation and be rewarded
- Clay, bone, and ichor: Bear witness to tales and memories of betrayal, suffering, and revenge as Grey Irma and her fellow beings of flesh and clay seek truth and purpose
Combat and boss encounters
Reviewers highlight fluid or satisfying combat, challenging fights and boss encounters. The mix of sword attacks, parries, special weapons and Witchery gives players several tools to learn, while the game’s demanding approach makes timing and adaptation central to progress. NME praises its challenging fights, and other cited criticism points to the way it combines Souls-like and Metroidvania ideas.
Exploration and temporary enhancements
The nonlinear structure gives players room to explore and revisit routes as they grow stronger. Everyeye calls attention to the Moon and its temporary enhancements, another part of the game’s systems that can shape how a run feels. The appeal depends in part on enjoying discovery and experimentation rather than expecting every route or mechanic to be immediately explained.

What are the main criticisms?
- Opaque mechanics and story: Some criticism centers on systems or narrative details that can be difficult to follow, which may make discovery feel more confusing than compelling.
- Uneven balance and enemy variety: Reviewers note balance issues and limited enemy variety, concerns that can make repeated encounters feel less fresh.
- Save-system frustration and minor bugs: Cited reviews mention frustrating save-system behavior and minor technical problems.
- A steep late-game spike: The final levels are reported to raise the difficulty sharply, making an already demanding game feel less even in its challenge.
These drawbacks matter most if you dislike punitive combat, unclear systems or difficulty that changes noticeably over the course of a game. That audience fit is an inference from the cited reviews, not a claim of first-hand play.
What do the review scores say?
Review aggregators and storefront reviews count different things. Metacritic separates professional critics from its own user ratings; Steam reports the share of its users who recommend the game. Their figures should be read independently, not averaged into a single verdict.

These are time-sensitive snapshots, not scores fixed at the game’s 2022 launch. Metacritic’s listed Digital Chumps review, dated October 7, 2022, called it “a tough game that has a thick amount of creativity in both story and presence.” That description captures both the ambition and the demanding nature reflected across the reception.
How hard is Moonscars?
Expect combat that rewards learning enemy patterns, timing parries and making effective use of your abilities. The game’s death-and-return loop is part of its intended progression, but that does not make every setback equally satisfying: the reported balance concerns and late-game spike mean challenge can feel uneven. If difficult action-platformers are your kind of game, that pressure may be a draw. If you prefer forgiving combat or clear explanations, it is a meaningful reason to hesitate.

Is Moonscars worth playing?
Moonscars is worth considering if you want a dark, visually distinctive action-platformer and enjoy learning demanding combat through repeated attempts. Its strongest review themes are atmosphere, art and challenging fights. The counterweight is a set of recurring complaints about clarity, balance, enemy variety, saving and the late-game curve. The mixed user-rating picture alongside more favorable critic and Steam snapshots suggests the game’s appeal depends heavily on whether its particular kind of difficulty works for you.
