Warner Bros. Games revealed Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns on July 26, 2024: a paid story expansion accompanied by Kombat Pack 2, a six-fighter lineup that includes Ghostface, T-1000, and Conan the Barbarian. The reveal also confirmed that this New Era reimagines Cyrax and Sektor as women. The original rollout dates below are historical; the expansion’s current access and purchase details are separate.
What was revealed at SDCC 2024?
In its July 26, 2024 announcement, Warner Bros. Games presented Khaos Reigns as a cinematic story expansion for Mortal Kombat 1, alongside Kombat Pack 2. The announced pack had six playable fighters:

Although the original headline highlighted Ghostface and T-1000, Conan was also part of the announced guest-fighter roster. The official FAQ additionally associates Madam Bo with Kombat Pack 2 as a Kameo fighter; she is separate from its six playable fighters. The official FAQ lists Madam Bo as a Kameo.

In Mortal Kombat 1’s New Era, Cyrax and Sektor are women. Nintendo’s launch-era character descriptions use she/her for both and distinguish their approaches:

These are reimaginings for the game’s timeline, not a claim that the characters have always had those identities across the franchise. Nintendo’s launch-era announcement describes the characters and expansion.
What is the Khaos Reigns story about?
The expansion continues Liu Kang’s New Era. Titan Havik, arriving from an alternate timeline, threatens the realms and aims to spread chaos. That premise places the new story in the consequences of Mortal Kombat 1’s altered timeline rather than presenting the DLC as only a fighter pack. Nintendo’s announcement summarizes the story setup.

How did the original fighter rollout work?
At the reveal, Warner Bros. Games scheduled the story expansion and Noob Saibot, Cyrax, and Sektor for September 24, 2024. Ghostface, T-1000, and Conan were announced for later release, with one-week early access for Khaos Reigns owners. These were the publisher’s plans at announcement, not future dates. Warner Bros. For one later example of the rollout, Xbox Wire reported Ghostface early access beginning November 19, 2024, followed by general availability on November 26, 2024. Those dates are also past. Xbox Wire reported Ghostface’s release timing.

What does Khaos Reigns include, and what is free?
The paid expansion adds the story content; Kombat Pack 2 is the associated character lineup. Animalities are different: the official FAQ identifies them as a free content update for all owners of the base game, so they do not require the expansion. As of the official FAQ reviewed October 4, 2026, Khaos Reigns is digital-only, requires the Mortal Kombat 1 base game, and is not sold as a physical expansion. The FAQ lists suggested retail prices of $49.99 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, and $39.99 for Nintendo Switch. These are suggested prices, not guaranteed live storefront prices; regional availability and actual store prices may differ. Check the official FAQ for its current product and pricing details.

Warner Bros. Games said Mortal Kombat 1 had sold more than 4 million units worldwide by its September 2024 launch announcement. That figure is for the base game, not Khaos Reigns; the official materials cited here do not state expansion sales. The publisher’s announcement gives the base-game sales figure.
