A March 2022 report by Hackaday describes it as an effort to bring parts of the arcade presentation to the console game, with upgraded sound and animation, additional playable fighters, and other features. It remains a Genesis-based fan hack—not a separate arcade release—and the report does not establish today’s patch availability or compatibility.
What Mortal Kombat Arcade Edition changes
Hackaday’s March 3, 2022 report describes a project led by a developer group headed by Paulo. Its aim is to restore aspects of the arcade version’s presentation in the Genesis/Mega Drive adaptation. The reported changes include:

- Higher-quality versions of sound effects and animations that were omitted from the 1993 console adaptation.
- Remastered fighter appearances and adjustments to move timing.
- Arcade character biographies.
- An SRAM save feature for high scores.
- A configuration screen styled after arcade DIP switches, including a free-play setting.
These are features described in Hackaday’s report, not results of independent testing. The project is restoration-minded, but it is still a modification of the Genesis game rather than a claim of complete arcade equivalence.
Which characters become playable?
The report names Reptile, Noob Saibot, and Ermac as playable characters in the hack. It also describes remastered appearances for fighters, but does not provide a complete character-by-character breakdown of visual or gameplay changes.
#1 Best Overall
- This renewed game will not come with the original case or manual; cartridge only.
- It has been cleaned, tested, and is in nice condition.
Is it a complete game or a patch?
Hackaday describes the release as an IPS patch, not a full game image. The patch modifies game data; the commercial game data itself is a separate matter. The report says to apply it to a legitimate dump of the player’s own Genesis or Mega Drive cartridge.
The article points to the browser-based Rom Patcher JS tool for applying the patch, then says the resulting image can be played in an emulator or on original hardware with a ROM cartridge. That describes the reported route, but does not verify that the tool remains available, that every cartridge dump will work, or that current emulators support this particular patch.

What base game and setup does it require?
Before patching, check the project’s current documentation for the exact base-ROM revision and checksum it expects. Those details are not established by the 2022 report: its linked ROMhacking.net project page could not be opened for verification. Do not assume that a dump from any Genesis/Mega Drive cartridge will match.
The report gives emulator play and original hardware with a ROM cartridge as general options. It does not document specific emulator versions, flash-cart models, or present-day hardware compatibility. Treat those as unconfirmed until the project’s current documentation identifies supported setups.

How it relates to the original Genesis and arcade games
Hackaday places the Genesis release in the early 16-bit console rivalry: the SNES version removed blood and gore, while the Genesis version retained more violent content behind the well-known ABACABB code. The hack builds on the Genesis version, aiming to restore selected arcade-style presentation and content. That context does not establish that players universally preferred one console version, nor does the hack cease to be a Genesis adaptation.
For a practical comparison, the reported differences fall into three areas:
Rank #4
- Number of Players Supported: 1-2 Players
- Input Devices Supported: 6-button Controller
- Presentation: upgraded audio and animation, plus remastered fighter appearances.
- Roster and features: three named additional playable characters, biographies, high-score saving, and a free-play configuration option.
- Setup: an IPS patch applied to a compatible base game. Exact ROM requirements and current compatibility are not confirmed by the report.
What is—and is not—confirmed today
The available account is Hackaday’s report, published March 3, 2022. It documents the project’s reported features and patch format as of that publication, but does not establish whether a current patch release is available, whether the patch has changed, or which ROM revisions and devices work today. Confirm those details with current project documentation before patching or choosing hardware.
