In V3.0, the M60 leads the cited firearm ranking for sustained automatic fire, while the Steel Sledgehammer has the highest listed melee damage per swing. Your build, ammunition, and the individual weapon’s Magnitude roll can change which performs best for you.

| Situation | Strong candidate | Why it fits | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Horde waves and sustained fire | M60 Machine Gun | S tier; 87.2 Q6 damage, a 60-round magazine, and 440 RPM in 7DTD Central’s V3.0 table. | Its fast automatic fire can consume substantial ammunition, so ammo supply and build matter. |
| Point-blank crowd control | Auto Shotgun | S tier; 16-round magazine and 70 RPM in the V3.0 table. It is a close-range specialist. | Its performance falls off outside close range. |
| Long-range elimination | Sniper Rifle | S tier; 124.7 Q6 damage and a 12-round magazine in the V3.0 table. | The smaller magazine and slower firing make it less suited to sustained automatic fire. |
| Highest listed melee damage per hit | Steel Sledgehammer | 82.5 Q6 damage per swing in the V3.0 melee table. | Slow swings and stamina demand make each attack a commitment. |
| Flexible melee use | Steel Club | Ranked as an all-rounder for damage and block damage. | Its value depends on Strength/perk investment and player preference. |
| Melee with safer reach | Steel Spear | 3.5 m reach, the longest listed in the cited melee table. | Its listed damage is lower than the Steel Sledgehammer’s. |
7DTD Central says its firearm ranking considers Q6 damage, sustained fire, and ammunition economy; its melee ranking weighs Q6 damage, swing speed, reach, and intended role. Those criteria help explain why the tables point to different winners for different jobs. See the V3.0 firearm tier list and the melee tier list.
Why the M60 and Auto Shotgun stand out
M60: sustained automatic fire
The M60 is the stronger fit when you need to keep firing through a horde rather than conserve every round. Its 60-round magazine and 440 RPM support sustained output, but that firing rate makes ammunition use a major practical constraint. Its table damage is specifically the Q6 figure, not a guarantee that every M60 you find will deal that amount.

Auto Shotgun: close-range pressure
The Auto Shotgun is also rated S tier, but for a different job. Treat it as a point-blank crowd-control weapon: its ranking does not mean its close-range strength carries over to distant targets. Its listed magazine is 16 rounds and its rate is 70 RPM.
When to choose the Sniper Rifle
For long-range elimination, the V3.0 firearm ranking favors the Sniper Rifle, listing 124.7 Q6 damage and a 12-round magazine. It offers a different trade from the M60: the cited guide identifies it as a high-damage ranged option, while the M60 is the sustained-fire choice. Pick based on whether you need distance and damage per shot or a continuing stream of fire.

Choosing a melee weapon
Steel Sledgehammer: peak single-hit damage
The Steel Sledgehammer has the highest single-hit value in the cited melee table at 82.5 Q6 damage per swing. That figure describes damage per hit, not damage over time. Slow swings and stamina cost can make it less forgiving when enemies are close or attacks must be repeated quickly.
Steel Club: all-round use
The Steel Club is presented as the melee all-rounder, with useful damage and block damage. It is a practical option if you want a more flexible melee choice than a weapon selected solely for its peak hit, but Strength/perk investment and your preferred combat rhythm affect its value.
Rank #3
- Unlimited hours of gameplay
- Explore - Huge, unique and rich environments, offering the freedom to play the game however you want
- Craft - craft and repair weapons, clothes, armour, tools, vehicles, and more
- Build - Take over a ruin, or build from the ground-up. Design your fortress to include traps and defensive positions to survive the undead
- Cooperate or Compete - Includes two player split screen mode, with support for up to 4 players online, in Player versus Player, co-op survival, or co-op creative modes
Steel Spear: reach
The Steel Spear’s cited reach is 3.5 m, the longest in the melee table. Reach can help keep distance during melee combat; the trade is lower listed damage than the Steel Sledgehammer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check the individual weapon’s Magnitude roll
A weapon’s model and quality label do not tell the whole story. The V3.0 guide from 7DTD Tool Studio says Magnitude rolls can modify entity damage, block damage, attack speed, range, and magazine size independently of quality. Its reported ranges are:
Rank #4
- Explore & Craft - Huge, unique and rich environments, offering the freedom to play the game any way you want while you craft and repair weapons, clothes, armor, tools, vehicles, and more.
- Build - Take over a ruin, or build from the ground-up. Design your fortress to include traps and defensive positions to survive the undead - the world is fully destructible and moldable.
- Cooperate or Compete - Includes two player split screen mode, with additional online multiplayer modes and features to be revealed in the near future.
- Create - Unleash your creativity and build the ultimate world by yourself friends. Enjoy unlimited access to nearly 400 in-game items and 1,200 unique building blocks in creative mode.
- Improve - Increase your skills in a multitude of active and passive disciplines. 7 to Die is the only true survival RPG with nearly 50 multi-tiered skill and perk groups.
- Entity and block damage: +5% to +25%.
- Attack speed: +3% to +12%.
- Range: +5% to +20%.
- Magazine size: +5% to +15%.
Because these modifiers roll independently of quality, a lower-quality weapon with a favorable damage roll may outperform a higher-quality one without that bonus. Compare the actual item’s rolled stats with the job you need it to do, rather than choosing by quality alone. 7DTD Tool Studio’s V3.0 weapon guide gives M60 and Auto Shotgun as its S-tier picks and discusses how damage and magazine bonuses suit automatic fire, while shotgun performance remains range-dependent.

How to make the choice
- Choose the job first: sustained fire points to the M60, point-blank combat to the Auto Shotgun, long-range elimination to the Sniper Rifle, and melee to a weapon suited to your reach or hit-damage preference.
- Check your resources and build: consider ammunition availability for firearms and stamina demands or Strength/perk investment for melee.
- Inspect the actual roll: compare Magnitude modifiers and weapon stats, not just the model name or quality label.
