If your mouse leaves a Windows 11 game and moves onto another monitor, restart Windows, update it, and test the game without opening Xbox Game Bar. Then try exclusive fullscreen, check the game’s cursor-capture settings, and disable overlays one at a time. These steps usually identify whether the problem is Game Bar, the game’s display mode, Windows graphics handling, or a driver conflict.
First, identify what is actually failing
“The mouse is not locking” can describe several different problems:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- The pointer physically crosses onto another monitor.
- The pointer remains visible outside the game, but the game still receives mouse movement.
- A click on another monitor steals focus from the game.
- The game minimizes or switches focus when the pointer escapes.
- The problem appears only after pressing Win+G, using Alt+Tab, or opening an overlay.
- The pointer escapes only in menus, maps, inventories, or other screens where the game intentionally displays a software cursor.
Also note whether it happens in one game or every game. A one-game problem is usually a game setting or implementation issue; a system-wide problem points more strongly to Game Bar, overlays, Windows, display configuration, or a graphics driver.
The fastest fix
- Restart Windows.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Install available updates and restart again.
- Launch the affected game without pressing Win+G.
- Move the pointer toward the edge of the gaming monitor and test whether it escapes.
- If the issue is gone, test again after opening and closing Game Bar. This identifies whether the overlay is restoring mouse capture incorrectly.
Microsoft previously documented a Windows 11 issue in which the mouse could unlock from a game window on a multi-monitor system after Game Bar was opened and closed. A related fix appeared in Insider build 22635.4435 and was associated in community reports with KB5044377. That is historical evidence, not a universal fix to hunt for on every Windows 11 release. On a current system, install all available updates instead.

Fix Xbox Game Bar and overlay-related capture problems
If the cursor escapes only after Game Bar opens, avoid using the overlay while testing. Use the Xbox app or another communication method temporarily instead of opening widgets during gameplay.
Do not uninstall Xbox Game Bar as your first step. Removing its packages can break ms-gamingoverlay links, remove useful functionality, and create new errors without correcting the underlying capture problem.
Disable other overlays temporarily, then retest:
- Steam Overlay
- Discord Overlay
- NVIDIA or AMD overlays
- Overwolf and performance monitors
- Crosshair and widget tools
- Screen-recording utilities
Disable one overlay at a time where possible. If the problem disappears, re-enable the others individually to find the conflict. No single overlay causes every instance of cursor escape.
Microsoft Q&A reports describe Game Bar-related cursor-lock failures, but those reports should not be treated as confirmation that every current Windows build has the same bug.
Change the game’s display mode
Try exclusive fullscreen first
Choose Fullscreen in the game’s video or display settings, then restart the game. Exclusive fullscreen is the best first test when your priority is keeping the pointer inside the game and preventing accidental clicks on another display.

It can make Alt+Tab slower, cause flicker, or minimize the game when switching monitors. Some modern games also label a borderless presentation as “Fullscreen,” so the menu name is not a guarantee of true exclusive fullscreen.
Use borderless windowed deliberately
Borderless Windowed or Fullscreen Windowed usually makes Alt+Tab and multi-monitor use easier. However, it is still a window, and some games do not confine the Windows pointer reliably in this mode. Borderless mode may improve focus behavior without truly fixing cursor capture.
Use windowed mode as a diagnostic
Windowed mode can show whether the game captures the mouse at all. It is useful for troubleshooting but is rarely the preferred permanent mode for competitive or immersive play.
Check the game’s mouse settings
Search the game’s controls, mouse, input, or accessibility menus for settings named:
- Lock cursor to window
- Confine cursor or Confine mouse cursor
- Capture mouse
- Keep cursor inside window
- Raw input
- Hardware cursor
Names vary by game, and not every title offers these controls. Raw Input does not necessarily lock the Windows pointer. It changes how the game reads mouse movement, so it may allow camera control while the visible pointer can still cross to another monitor.

Test Windows 11 windowed-game optimizations
This setting matters mainly for DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless-windowed modes.
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Select the affected game in the app list.
- Select Options.
- Test Optimizations for windowed games enabled.
- If it is already enabled and the issue occurs in borderless mode, test it disabled.
- Select Save, then restart the game.
Windows may enable this path automatically when Auto HDR is enabled. If Windows will not let you turn the optimization off, disable Auto HDR first. This is a per-game test, not a setting to change blindly across the system.

Test fullscreen optimizations for the actual game executable
- Find the game’s real
.exefile, not just its launcher. - Right-click it and select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Enable Disable fullscreen optimizations.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Relaunch the game.
This is a compatibility experiment, not a guaranteed fix. It can improve input or focus behavior in one game while worsening scaling, HDR, latency, or presentation in another. Revert the checkbox if it changes nothing or creates new problems.
If the problem began after a Windows or GPU update
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history and note recent installation dates.
- Check whether the issue affects multiple games.
- Restart and test with Game Bar and all overlays unused.
- Install newer Windows updates if available.
- If the timing strongly matches a graphics-driver installation, consider updating to a newer driver or rolling back that driver.
Only consider uninstalling a recent Windows update after the simpler tests fail and the timing is convincing. Do not leave security updates removed indefinitely.

Use a reliable cursor-lock workaround
If Windows and the game still fail to confine the pointer, a hotkey-based utility can provide a practical fallback for multi-monitor gaming. Download software only from its official site, and remember that display hooks or background utilities may conflict with overlays, permissions, or anti-cheat systems.
| Option | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Dual Monitor Tools | A focused, no-cost cursor-lock workaround | Less comprehensive and potentially less polished than a full monitor suite |
| DisplayFusion | Cursor locking plus monitor profiles and window management | Commercial software may be excessive for one cursor problem |
| Exclusive fullscreen | Users who want no additional software | Slower monitor switching and possible flicker |
| Disable the second monitor | A quick diagnostic test | Poor permanent usability |
DisplayFusion documents a Lock/Unlock Mouse Cursor to Current Monitor function. Dual Monitor Tools users report a cursor option under Options > Cursor > Sticky > Lock cursor onto screen; the exact interface may vary by release.
If disabling the second display immediately solves the problem, that strongly suggests a monitor-boundary or cursor-capture issue rather than a defective mouse.

- Only after Win+G: restart, update Windows and Game Bar, and avoid the overlay during gameplay.
- Only in one game: prioritize that game’s display mode, cursor settings, executable compatibility options, updates, launch options, and anti-cheat or overlay interactions.
- In every game after an update: check update history, disable overlays, test Windows graphics options, and investigate the GPU driver.
- Only in menus or maps: check whether the game intentionally releases the pointer.
- Borderless improves focus but not confinement: use exclusive fullscreen or a deliberate cursor-lock hotkey.
Windows 11 version 24H2 and later also include a newer Xbox full-screen experience on supported systems and markets. That feature is separate from the game’s own fullscreen setting, so do not confuse the two.

FAQ
Why does my mouse move to my second monitor in fullscreen?
Fullscreen does not always mean true exclusive fullscreen, and the game, Game Bar, an overlay, or Windows may have lost mouse capture. Test exclusive fullscreen and launch once without Game Bar.

Does this mean my mouse is defective?
Usually not. If the pointer escapes only while gaming, especially across multiple games or after an overlay opens, the problem is more likely window or input capture than mouse hardware.
Should I disable fullscreen optimizations permanently?
No. Test it per game. It may solve a compatibility problem but can also affect HDR, scaling, latency, or presentation quality.
Can I fix the problem without third-party software?
Often. Updating Windows, avoiding the triggering overlay, choosing the right display mode, and enabling a game’s cursor-confinement option should be tried first. A cursor-lock utility is a fallback, not a requirement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the problem return after I open Game Bar?
Game Bar can sometimes fail to restore the game’s previous mouse-capture state after an overlay or widget closes. Restart Windows, update the system, and avoid opening Win+G while testing.
Why does the cursor escape in only one game?
That usually indicates the game’s display mode, mouse-capture implementation, configuration, executable compatibility settings, or an interaction with that game’s overlay or anti-cheat system.
Does borderless fullscreen guarantee cursor locking?
No. Borderless mode can improve Alt+Tab behavior while still allowing the pointer to cross monitors, depending on how the game implements mouse confinement.
