Critics broadly praise its writing and bleak imagery; the main reservation is that its puzzles and chase sequences can feel shallow or repetitive. It also contains extreme violence, gore, and mutilation, so its subject matter is a significant part of the decision.
What are critics saying about Mouthwashing?
In Metacritic’s October 2026 snapshot, Mouthwashing has an 88/100 Metascore from 20 critic reviews: 19 positive and one mixed. That indicates a strong critical reception in this sample, not that every reviewer liked every part of the game.
Critics repeatedly praise the bleak atmosphere, striking lo-fi presentation, writing, and psychological unease. Positive reviews describe the experience as memorable and compelling, particularly for its willingness to make players uncomfortable. Some reviewers find the narrative more effective than the mechanics supporting it.
The principal criticism is limited gameplay depth. At least one review describes puzzles and chase sections as dull or repetitive, arguing that shallow interactions weaken an otherwise captivating story. The split is useful to keep in mind: the strongest case for the game is its mood and narrative, not a promise of consistently varied mechanics.

How do player reviews compare with critic reviews?
Steam’s October 2026 snapshot shows 95% positive among 24,669 English-language user reviews. That is a separate audience and measurement from Metacritic’s critic score; the figures should not be averaged or treated as interchangeable. Both are snapshots, and review totals and ratings can change.
| Source | Snapshot rating | Sample | What it represents |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metacritic | 88/100 | 20 critic reviews: 19 positive, one mixed | Critic-review aggregate |
| Steam | 95% positive | 24,669 English user reviews | Steam user recommendations |
These figures were listed in October 2026 by Metacritic and the Steam store. Neither number tells you whether the game’s particular mix of disturbing storytelling and relatively limited interaction will suit you.

What kind of horror game is Mouthwashing?
Mouthwashing is a single-player, first-person horror game developed by Wrong Organ and published by CRITICAL REFLEX. Steam lists its release date as September 26, 2024, and describes a dying crew aboard a shipwrecked space freighter. The store’s own description calls it “a first-person horror game following the dying crew of a shipwrecked space freighter.”
Its horror relies heavily on oppressive atmosphere, unsettling imagery, and psychological discomfort. The critic response suggests that players looking primarily for a strong narrative and a memorable mood are more likely to appreciate it than players who expect extensive systems, intricate puzzles, or consistently varied action.

Is Mouthwashing right for you?
It may suit you if
- You value atmosphere, writing, and psychological impact over mechanical complexity.
- You want an experience that aims to unsettle rather than provide comfortable, conventional horror.
- You are comfortable with graphic content, including extreme violence, gore, and mutilation.
You may want to skip it if
- You need puzzles and chase sequences to be a major source of variety or challenge.
- You prefer horror that avoids explicit gore or mutilation.
- You are looking for a game whose mechanics are as consistently praised as its story and atmosphere.
Steam explicitly flags extreme violence, gore, and mutilation on the store listing. Treat that warning as a central content consideration, not a minor caveat.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Mouthwashing still worth playing in 2026?
The available critic and Steam snapshots remain strongly positive in October 2026, but a score cannot settle whether the game fits your tastes. Its clearest appeal is a disturbing, story-forward horror experience with a distinctive atmosphere; its clearest trade-off is that some of the play between narrative moments may feel repetitive or underdeveloped. Decide based on that contrast—and on your tolerance for graphic horror—rather than the aggregate score alone.
