mprui.dll is a Microsoft Windows networking component, and an mprui.dll error does not automatically mean malware. Before changing anything, note which program displays the message, when it appears, and whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.

  • Which program is named? Record the application or game shown in the error. If no program is named, the caller may be a startup task, old network utility, or leftover uninstaller.
  • When does it happen? Note whether the error appears during startup, login, while opening a particular application, or when connecting to a network.
  • What is the exact wording? Common variants include “mprui.dll is missing,” “mprui.dll was not found,” “The specified module could not be found,” and “mprui.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
  • What changed recently? Check for an interrupted update, antivirus detection, removed software, driver installation, disk problem, or newly installed application.
  • Which architecture is installed? Open Settings → System → About and check System type. Do not copy a DLL between System32 and SysWOW64 based only on the folder names.

The safest repair is to service Windows rather than download a replacement DLL. Work through the fixes below in order.

What mprui.dll is

mprui.dll is a genuine Microsoft file historically described as Multiple Provider. It is associated with the Windows Multiple Provider Router, or MPR, which handles Windows networking calls and communicates with installed network providers. Microsoft describes MPR as the layer that loads registered network-provider DLLs and manages WNet networking operations in Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft’s open-source Windows File Manager also references functions loaded from mprui.dll for network-related user-interface tasks, including password, reconnect, and network-profile error dialogs. That makes the file a Windows networking helper library, not a general-purpose application runtime.

Historical Windows inventories place the file at:

%SystemRoot%System32mprui.dll

You can read Microsoft’s Multiple Provider Router documentation and the Microsoft WinFile source references for MPRUI for its documented context.

The historical evidence is strongest for Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and related legacy installations. It does not establish that every current Windows 10 or Windows 11 edition contains the same file, with the same version, or in the same servicing package. Microsoft does not provide a verified standalone mprui.dll download for users to copy manually.

What the error actually means

The Windows loader uses DLLs when starting programs and system components. A missing-file message means the caller requested mprui.dll and Windows could not load it from the expected search locations. That can happen for several reasons:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The file was deleted or damaged.
  • Windows component servicing is incomplete or corrupted.
  • Defender or another security product quarantined it.
  • An older application expects a legacy Windows component.
  • The DLL exists, but one of its dependencies is missing or damaged.
  • The application is using an incorrect DLL search path.
  • A recent system or software change left a broken startup entry.
  • A file with the right name was replaced by an unsafe or incompatible copy.

“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean that mprui.dll itself is absent. It can also indicate a missing dependency. Historical dependency records associate the file with other Windows libraries, including mpr.dll, msvcrt.dll, NETUI0.dll, NETUI2.dll, USER32.dll, GDI32.dll, and KERNEL32.dll. Do not use that list as a reason to download those files individually. Repair Windows or the affected application instead.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart

An interrupted or incomplete update is a common first suspect when a Windows component suddenly disappears or becomes invalid.

  1. Open Start → Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update. On some Windows 10 installations, select Update & Security → Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install all available Windows updates.
  5. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  6. Reopen the program that displayed the error.

If the error is gone, do not replace any files manually. If Windows Update reports an error, repeatedly fails, or cannot complete, continue with the component repair steps.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and System File Checker

Use an elevated Command Prompt. These commands repair Windows in the correct order: DISM repairs the component source, then SFC checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies when a valid component-store copy is available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start and type Command Prompt.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
  3. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  4. Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window because progress appears to pause at times.
  2. Run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the affected program again.

A successful DISM run means the component image was checked and repaired or found to be healthy. SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired corrupted files, or found files it could not repair.

If SFC says it repaired files, restart and test the application. If it says it could not repair some files, run the commands once more after restarting. Repeating them indefinitely is not useful; move to the recovery options below if the result does not change.

If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation source:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with a valid source that matches the installed Windows edition and build. Do not guess at this path or use an unrelated installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The official Microsoft DISM and System File Checker instructions explain the supported sequence and log-based troubleshooting.

Running DISM and SFC manually is safe, but it can be difficult to identify which component changed when repair results are unclear. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it found, while its repair functions require the full version; it is optional, and Microsoft’s built-in DISM and SFC remain the appropriate first-line tools.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a file after detecting suspicious replacement activity, corruption, or a false positive. Check the security history before assuming the file was simply deleted.

  1. Open Start → Settings → Privacy & security → Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review recent detections.
  5. Expand any detection that mentions mprui.dll or the application that produced the error.
  6. Inspect its location, detection name, and action.

Do not restore a file merely because its name is mprui.dll. First confirm that it came from the expected Windows location or from the legitimate application installer, and run a full Microsoft Defender scan. A file with the correct name but an unexpected location, signature, or metadata may be a replacement rather than a genuine Windows component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Defender clearly quarantined a genuine Windows file and identifies it as a false positive, Microsoft provides Restore and, where appropriate, Allow on device actions in Protection history. Use those actions only after validation. Microsoft’s Protection History guidance explains the available controls.

If the file was found inside an application directory, do not restore an unknown copy into that directory. Repair or reinstall the application from its original vendor or launcher instead.

After reviewing the detection, select Virus & threat protection → Scan options → Full scan. If you suspect an active infection or repeated replacement of files, use the available Microsoft Defender offline or recovery scanning option rather than repeatedly copying DLLs.

Fix 4: Repair or reinstall the named application

If the error appears only when opening one older program, that program may be requesting a legacy Windows library or using a broken DLL search path. In that case, the application is the most useful place to repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Windows app repair when available

  1. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  2. Find the program named in the error.
  3. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  4. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  5. Select Repair.
  6. Start the program again.

If Repair does not help, return to the same screen and use Reset only if you understand that it may remove the application’s local settings or data. Not every traditional desktop program provides these options.

Use the application’s own installer

For a classic desktop application:

  1. Close the program.
  2. Open Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features.
  3. Select the affected program.
  4. Choose Change, Repair, or Modify if the installer provides it.
  5. If no repair option exists, uninstall the program.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Reinstall it from the original vendor, licensed installation media, or the software’s official launcher.

If reinstalling the application resolves the error, the program was likely the caller or had an incomplete installation. If the error remains before the application opens, return to DISM, SFC, and System Restore rather than placing a DLL beside the executable.

Do not assume that installing Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET will provide mprui.dll. This file is associated with Windows networking, not with a verified package from those runtime families.

Fix 5: Check startup tasks when no program is named

An error that appears at every login but names no application often comes from an obsolete startup entry, scheduled task, network utility, or uninstaller left behind after software removal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with Windows’ built-in startup list:

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Look for entries associated with recently removed software, old network tools, or unknown publishers.
  4. Record the name and disable only entries you recognize as unnecessary.
  5. Restart and check whether the error returns.

Then inspect scheduled tasks:

  1. Open Start and type Task Scheduler.
  2. Open Task Scheduler.
  3. Select Task Scheduler Library.
  4. Review tasks that run at logon or startup.
  5. Check the Actions tab for a missing executable or a path connected with removed software.
  6. Disable a task only after confirming what created it. Do not delete a task just because its name is unfamiliar.

If the error stops after disabling a known obsolete entry, uninstall the associated software properly or reinstall it and then remove it through its supported uninstaller. If you cannot identify the caller, leave system tasks alone and proceed with Windows recovery rather than deleting registry entries.

Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change

System Restore is appropriate when the problem began after a driver, application, update, or configuration change and a suitable restore point exists.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point dated before the mprui.dll error began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs.
  5. Review the programs and drivers that may be removed or rolled back.
  6. Select Close, then Next.
  7. Confirm the restore and allow Windows to restart.

System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs, but it does not normally remove personal files. Microsoft’s System Restore instructions explain the process and limitations.

If no restore point exists, or the problem remains afterward, continue to Windows recovery rather than attempting a third-party DLL replacement.

Fix 7: Update or reinstall a related driver only when evidence points there

mprui.dll is not normally repaired by updating a random driver. Consider a driver only if the error began immediately after a network adapter, storage, security, or system-device change, or if Device Manager shows a related device problem.

  1. Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Network adapters and inspect the affected device.
  3. Also check System devices if the error appeared after a platform or chipset change.
  4. Right-click the device and choose Properties.
  5. Review the General tab for a device status error.
  6. Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
  7. Use Update Driver → Search automatically for drivers.
  8. Restart Windows and test the network or application.

If the problem started immediately after a driver update, open the device’s Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver if that button is available. Otherwise, obtain the correct driver from the computer or device manufacturer and install it through its official installer.

When several devices have stale or mismatched drivers, manually identifying the correct package can mean checking hardware IDs, Windows architecture, and manufacturer releases. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues, while driver installation through the full version is optional; verify every proposed driver against the hardware manufacturer before installing it.

Do not uninstall a network adapter driver merely because mprui.dll is named in an error. The file belongs to the Windows networking layer, but the error does not by itself prove that a particular adapter driver is defective.

Do not register or copy mprui.dll manually

regsvr32 is generally not applicable to mprui.dll. Microsoft documents regsvr32 for registering or unregistering DLLs that expose the COM registration entry point DllRegisterServer. mprui.dll is a Windows helper library, not a documented self-registering COM component.

Do not run commands such as:

regsvr32 mprui.dll
regsvr32 /i mprui.dll
regsvr32 /u mprui.dll

These commands do not repair an ordinary missing Windows component and can produce another error that obscures the original problem. See Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation for its intended use.

Also avoid these common actions:

  • Downloading mprui.dll from a DLL aggregation site.
  • Copying an unverified file into System32.
  • Copying the same file into both System32 and SysWOW64.
  • Replacing a file with a version number found in an old inventory.
  • Copying a DLL beside an application without confirming the application’s official repair procedure.
  • Disabling antivirus protection to force a file into place.

A downloaded DLL may contain malware, use the wrong architecture, have incompatible dependencies, or leave Windows’ component store inconsistent. Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, and a legitimate application installer are the safe sources and repair paths.

32-bit and 64-bit Windows

Windows uses architecture-specific system components. On 64-bit Windows, System32 commonly contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 supports 32-bit compatibility components. The names are counterintuitive, and manually moving files between those directories is unsafe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A 32-bit application running on 64-bit Windows may request a 32-bit dependency through Windows’ compatibility and redirection mechanisms. That does not mean you should copy mprui.dll into SysWOW64. The correct architecture must come from Windows servicing or the original application installer.

To check the installed architecture:

  1. Open Settings → System → About.
  2. Find System type.
  3. Record whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  4. Give that information to the application vendor if a legacy program still fails after Windows repair.

Do not use historical file records as replacement targets. They describe older Windows installations and do not establish a safe current file for Windows 10 or Windows 11.

When Windows repair still fails

Escalate when any of these conditions applies:

  • DISM cannot repair the component store.
  • SFC repeatedly reports unrepaired files.
  • The error returns after every restart.
  • Defender reports repeated replacement or suspicious activity.
  • Windows has other unexplained system failures.
  • The machine cannot complete updates.
  • The affected application is essential but its installer is unavailable.

Microsoft’s Windows recovery options cover recovery environments, reset choices, and repair installation paths. Back up important data before using any recovery option. If the machine is infected or system repair repeatedly fails, use a supported repair reinstall or recovery installation rather than manually replacing system DLLs.

FAQ

Is mprui.dll a Microsoft file?

Yes. mprui.dll is identified as Multiple Provider, published by Microsoft, and associated with Microsoft Windows. A file with that name is not automatically genuine, however. Location, signature, and detection history still matter.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is mprui.dll malware?

The legitimate Windows component is not malware. Malware can use a familiar filename, so inspect the file’s origin and scan the system if it appears in an unexpected folder or is repeatedly recreated.

Is it part of Windows networking?

Yes. It is a user-interface/helper library associated with the Multiple Provider Router and Windows network-provider dialogs.

Should I download mprui.dll?

No. There is no verified Microsoft standalone download to use as a general replacement. Repair Windows through Windows Update, DISM, and SFC, or repair the named application through its legitimate installer.

Does every Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer contain it?

That is not established. Historical evidence confirms the file in older Windows installations, but the exact current component-manifest status and package availability for every Windows 10 and Windows 11 edition are not verified. Treat an old application’s request for the file as a possible compatibility or application-installation issue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does “specified module could not be found” appear when the file exists?

The loader may be unable to load a dependency of mprui.dll, or the application may be using an incorrect search path. Repair Windows and the application instead of downloading dependencies individually.

Can regsvr32 fix it?

Usually not. regsvr32 is for self-registering COM and ActiveX DLLs. mprui.dll is not documented as that type of component.

What if the error appears at every startup?

Check Startup apps and Task Scheduler for a leftover network utility, uninstaller, or old application. If you cannot identify the caller, run DISM and SFC, check Defender Protection history, and use System Restore if the problem followed a recent change.

What is the correct fix for a named legacy program?

Repair or reinstall that program from its original vendor or launcher after completing Windows servicing. If the program is too old for the current Windows installation, contact its vendor or replace it with a supported version rather than forcing an old DLL into Windows directories.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
