First confirm that the error names tabctl32.dll, because TABCTL32.OCX is a different Visual Basic 6 component with a different repair process.
What this file actually does
tabctl32.dll is a 32-bit third-party application DLL described in public file records as the IntelliQuest Tab Control DLL, attributed to IntelliQuest Communications, Inc. It is not a normal Windows system file, and there is no verified current Microsoft or IntelliQuest download package for it.

The file probably arrived with a legacy Windows program. One historical software inventory associates it with an old OmniForm-related installation, but that does not prove every copy belongs to that product. The important point is that the parent application owns the dependency. Its installer may expect the DLL in the application’s private directory alongside other files, not in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Public records describe the file as 32-bit. No verified 64-bit build has been established. A 32-bit application therefore needs a compatible 32-bit copy, and a randomly downloaded 64-bit file cannot substitute for it.
#1 Best Overall
The filename is also easy to confuse with TABCTL32.OCX, which is a Microsoft Visual Basic 6 ActiveX control. Microsoft lists that OCX in the Visual Basic 6 Runtime Extended Files package, not the unrelated tabctl32.dll. The VB6 support policy also confirms that these legacy runtime components are 32-bit and run on 64-bit Windows through WOW64.
Causes by symptom
| What you see | Most likely cause | Correct direction |
|---|---|---|
| “tabctl32.dll was not found” when one old program starts | The application installation is incomplete or the file was removed | Repair or reinstall that application |
| The error began after antivirus detection | The original application file was quarantined | Check Protection history and verify the file’s origin |
| “The specified module could not be found” even though the DLL is visible | A dependency of tabctl32.dll is missing |
Reinstall the parent application and its prerequisites |
| “Not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error” | Wrong architecture, corrupted file, or incompatible binary | Replace the complete application installation |
Runtime error 339 names TABCTL32.OCX |
This is an ActiveX control problem, not a tabctl32.dll problem |
Install or repair the VB6 extended runtime and register the OCX if necessary |
| The program is an old 32-bit application | It may require private legacy files that modern installers do not provide | Use the original installer, compatibility settings, or an older supported environment |
| The failure appeared after restoring a backup | The executable and its dependencies may be from different installation states | Restore or reinstall the complete application |
The exact application name matters more than the DLL name. Windows reports the missing module, but it does not tell you which installer originally supplied it.
Fix 1: Identify the application that requests the file
Do this before copying anything or using regsvr32.
Check the error window
Read the title bar and message carefully. Note:
- The application name
- Whether the message says
tabctl32.dllorTABCTL32.OCX - Whether it says “not found,” “specified module could not be found,” or “not designed to run on Windows”
- The moment the error appears
If the message appears while launching a shortcut, right-click that shortcut and select Properties. On the Shortcut tab, read the Target path. That folder usually identifies the parent program.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck Installed apps
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for the program that fails.
- Select its three-dot menu, if available.
- Look for Modify, Repair, or Advanced options.
Older programs may not appear there. Open Control Panel, select Programs, then Programs and Features, and look for the application in the list.
Check the application directory
If you know the executable path:
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, select Open File Location.
- Look for
tabctl32.dllin the same folder as the executable.
Do not treat the presence of a file as proof that it is valid. A damaged or wrong-version DLL can produce the same result as a missing one.
Also check whether the failure followed one of these events:
- The application was recently uninstalled or updated
- A system image or backup was restored
- The program was moved to another drive
- Antivirus quarantined a file
- A cleanup utility removed legacy application files
- The program was copied from another computer instead of installed
Fix 2: Repair the parent application
Repair is the safest first repair because it restores the dependency in the location and version expected by the program.
Recommended Free Tools
Use the application’s repair option
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Modify, Repair, or Advanced options, depending on what the installer provides.
- Complete the repair wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the application again.
If the program is listed in Control Panel:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Modify.
- Follow the installer prompts.
If there is no repair option, uninstall and reinstall the program from its original installation media or the software publisher’s installer. Do not use a DLL download as a substitute for the application installer.
After reinstalling, check the program’s own directory again. A successful repair normally places the required files beside the application executable or in another directory selected by that application. It does not normally require manually placing tabctl32.dll in a Windows system directory.
If the application came from removable media
Use the same disc, network share, or archived installer that was used originally. Run the installer from a local folder if the media is unreliable:
- Copy the complete installer contents to a local folder.
- Right-click the setup program.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Choose Repair if offered.
- If repair is unavailable, uninstall the damaged installation first.
- Install the application again.
- Restart Windows and test it.
If the installer itself refuses to run, right-click it, select Properties, open the Compatibility tab, and try the compatibility troubleshooter. Compatibility settings may help an old installer start, but they cannot make an incorrect DLL compatible.

Antivirus software may remove a legacy file because old applications often contain outdated components or installers. Do not restore a file solely because its name matches the error.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections around the time the application stopped working.
- Expand a detection related to the affected program.
- Confirm the original file path and detection details.
- Restore or allow the item only if you can verify that it came from the legitimate application installation.
- Run a scan after restoring it.
- Repair or reinstall the parent application if the file is not available for safe restoration.
Microsoft warns that restoring a malicious file can put the device at risk. If the file came from an untrusted archive, a modified installer, or an unknown download, do not restore it. Obtain a clean copy of the complete application from its publisher or original media instead.
Fix 4: Handle the TABCTL32.OCX error separately
Stop if the message names TABCTL32.OCX rather than tabctl32.dll. These files are not interchangeable.
A common message is:
Run-time error ‘339’: Component
TABCTL32.OCXor one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid.Recommended: Crashes or Glitches? A Free Driver Scan Usually Finds the Culprit →Recommended: PC Feels Slow? Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
That points to an old Visual Basic application and its ActiveX control. Microsoft documents Tabctl32.ocx as part of the Visual Basic 6 Runtime Extended Files. The Microsoft rollup lists a supported file version of 6.1.98.16; it does not supply IntelliQuest’s unrelated tabctl32.dll.
Install the correct VB6 runtime component
Use the Microsoft Visual Basic 6 Runtime Extended Files package or the prerequisite package specified by the application publisher. Microsoft’s VB6 support documentation explains which legacy runtime components are supported and how they operate on current Windows versions.
After installing the prerequisite:
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the application again.
- If the error remains, locate the application’s intended
TABCTL32.OCX. - Confirm that it came from the application installer or Microsoft-supported runtime package.
- Register that OCX with the 32-bit registration tool.
On 64-bit Windows, open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
Rank #3
%windir%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe "C:pathTABCTL32.OCX"
Replace the path with the actual location. SysWOW64 contains the 32-bit tools on 64-bit Windows. On 32-bit Windows, use:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →%windir%System32regsvr32.exe "C:pathTABCTL32.OCX"
A successful registration displays a confirmation message. Launch the application again. If registration reports that the module could not be loaded, verify the path and the OCX’s dependencies. If it reports that the entry point was not found, the file may not be the correct ActiveX control.
Do not run regsvr32 against tabctl32.dll merely because its name looks similar. Ordinary runtime DLLs do not need registration, and registration is useful only when the original component specifically supports it.
Fix 5: Reinstall the application’s prerequisites
Some applications install their own controls, runtime libraries, database engines, or other dependencies. A missing dependency can cause Windows to report:
The specified module could not be found.
That message does not always mean the named DLL itself is absent. Windows may have found tabctl32.dll but failed to load a second library that it requires.
Use this order:
- Open the application’s installer.
- Look for Prerequisites, Repair, Modify, or Complete installation.
- Install every prerequisite supplied by the publisher.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the application from its original shortcut.
- If the error persists, uninstall the application.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it using the complete installer rather than copying program files manually.
If the application has a “Verify files” option in its launcher, use it only when that launcher actually distributes the affected application. There is no reliable basis for assuming that a modern game launcher owns this particular legacy DLL.
Fix 6: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit application cannot be repaired with an arbitrary 64-bit substitute. On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit programs normally run through WOW64, but they still require 32-bit versions of their dependencies.
To identify the application architecture:
- Open the application’s installation directory.
- Right-click the main executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab and review the available product information.
- If the information is inconclusive, use the application documentation or publisher installer to confirm its architecture.
Avoid moving files between System32, SysWOW64, and the application directory as a test. Those folders have different roles, and manually copying a private third-party DLL can cause version conflicts or DLL hijacking problems.
If Windows says the file is “not designed to run on Windows” or that it “contains an error,” reinstall the complete application. That wording can indicate a damaged file, an incompatible binary, a wrong architecture, or a file copied from another product.

Fix 7: Update or reinstall related drivers only when evidence points there
A graphics or device driver is not the normal source of tabctl32.dll. Use Device Manager only if the affected program also reports a display, printer, scanner, sound, or other hardware failure.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category for the affected hardware.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
For a clean driver repair:
- Open Device Manager.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Choose the option to remove the driver package only if you have a known replacement from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current driver supplied by the hardware manufacturer.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through hardware categories and guessing which driver is stale; its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. For this file, however, reinstalling the application that owns tabctl32.dll remains the definitive repair.
Do not update drivers simply because a DLL error appears. A driver change is relevant only when the application’s hardware interface is also failing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 8: Repair Windows components late in the process
tabctl32.dll is a private third-party application file, so Windows component repair normally will not restore it. Use DISM and SFC after repairing the parent application, particularly if multiple unrelated programs are failing or Windows itself shows corruption.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Run DISM
- Open the Start menu.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and test the application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC when repairing Windows components. If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the application again. If both commands complete without resolving the error, return to the application repair path. They are not a guaranteed source for tabctl32.dll.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without recording what changed makes diagnosis harder. Outbyte PC Repair can show detected repair issues in one scan, while the repair action requires the full version; it is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the application that owns this DLL.
Fix 9: Try compatibility settings for the old program
Compatibility mode can help an old installer or application handle newer Windows behavior, but it does not supply missing files.
- Right-click the application executable or shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an older Windows version that matches the application’s documentation.
- Select Run this program as an administrator only if the program requires elevated access.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch the program.
If the program still fails, clear the compatibility setting and use the original installer again. For business-critical legacy software, an appropriately isolated older Windows installation may be more reliable than repeatedly replacing individual files on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Do not download a random tabctl32.dll
Random DLL download sites are a poor repair source because the file may contain malware, be the wrong architecture, have incompatible metadata, or belong to another product. Public catalogs also disagree about the file’s reported version and size, so a listing is not proof that its copy matches the application’s expected binary.
Never:
- Copy an unknown DLL into
System32 - Copy a 64-bit file into a 32-bit application directory
- Register
tabctl32.dllwithout a documented reason - Replace the file with
TABCTL32.OCX - Use
tabctes.dllor another similarly named file - Disable antivirus protection to force an unknown file into place
The safe sources are the affected application’s original media, its publisher’s installer, and Microsoft’s documented VB6 runtime packages when the error specifically names TABCTL32.OCX.

If the error is still present
Collect these details before attempting another repair:
- Exact error text
- Whether the name is
.dllor.ocx - Application name and version, if shown
- Full path to the application executable
- Windows edition and version
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether the file exists in the application directory
- Recent uninstall, update, backup restore, or antivirus event
- Installer logs or relevant Event Viewer entries
To inspect Event Viewer:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
eventvwr.msc. - Press Enter.
- Open Windows Logs.
- Check Application around the time of the failure.
- Look for the application name or a side-by-side, loading, or application error.
If the failure started immediately after a known system change, System Restore may help. Open Start and search for Create a restore point, select System Restore, and choose a restore point from before the failure. Use this only after confirming that the restore point predates the problem, because installed applications and system settings may change.
FAQ
Is tabctl32.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is identified as a third-party 32-bit application DLL associated in public records with the IntelliQuest Tab Control DLL. It should not normally be downloaded into System32 or SysWOW64.
Is tabctl32.dll the same as TABCTL32.OCX?
No. TABCTL32.OCX is a Visual Basic 6 ActiveX control documented by Microsoft. tabctl32.dll is a separate third-party DLL. Use the error’s exact filename to choose the repair.
Should I register tabctl32.dll?
Usually not. Registering is relevant to self-registering components such as certain ActiveX controls. The correct TABCTL32.OCX may need 32-bit regsvr32; the DLL should be registered only if the original application documentation explicitly requires it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can Microsoft’s VB6 package fix tabctl32.dll?
Not automatically. Microsoft’s VB6 Runtime Extended Files package supplies Tabctl32.ocx, not the IntelliQuest DLL. It is relevant when the application reports the OCX or Runtime error 339.
Where should the DLL be installed?
Normally in the directory selected by the original application installer. Do not assume that System32 or SysWOW64 is correct.
What is the definitive fix?
Identify the parent application, then use its Repair option or reinstall it from original media or the publisher’s installer. That restores the expected file set and any dependencies together.
