Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing Windows files, record:
- Which program fails: Access, Visual Basic, an accounting or ERP application, or another legacy database program.
- When the error appears: while launching, installing, opening a database, or registering the application.
- The exact message: “msadox.dll was not found,” “library not registered,” or “the specified module could not be found” point to different causes.
- The application architecture: a 32-bit application needs 32-bit database components, while a 64-bit application normally needs 64-bit components.
- The file path: if
msadox.dllexists, note its location before attempting registration. - Recent changes: application updates, Windows updates, antivirus detections, driver changes, or a system restore.

msadox.dll is Microsoft’s ActiveX Data Objects Extensions library, and it is commonly involved when an older database application cannot start. The safest repair is usually to repair or reinstall the affected program from its original installer, not to download a replacement DLL.
What msadox.dll does
msadox.dll belongs to Microsoft Data Access Components, historically known as MDAC. Its internal description is Microsoft Data Access – ActiveX Data Objects Extensions.

ADOX extends ADO with objects used to define and manage databases, including catalogs, tables, columns, indexes, and keys. Microsoft describes these ADOX objects in its ADOX properties documentation.

- ADO provides a programming interface for accessing data.
- ADOX provides database-definition and security objects.
- OLE DB supplies the underlying data-provider model used by many older applications.
- ODBC is another database connectivity technology that may be used by the same application.
- Access, Visual Basic 6, accounting programs, ERP software, and custom database tools may depend on these components.
On older Windows versions, ADOX was distributed through MDAC. From Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 onward, Microsoft renamed the technology Windows Data Access Components, or Windows DAC, and integrated it into Windows. Microsoft’s MDAC and Windows DAC FAQ explains this transition.
That means msadox.dll may come from Windows, an older Microsoft data-access installation, Office or Access, or the installer for the affected application. It is not exclusively an Office file or exclusively an application-private file.
Understand the error before fixing it
| Message | Likely cause | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| “The program can’t start because msadox.dll is missing” | The file or its application dependency is absent | Repair or reinstall the affected application |
| “msadox.dll was not found” | Windows cannot find the file in the expected location | Check the installation, then repair Windows if appropriate |
| “Failed to load msadox.dll” | Wrong architecture, corruption, or a missing dependency | Check the file path and application bitness |
| “The specified module could not be found” | The DLL itself may exist, but a dependency may be missing | Repair the application and its runtime dependencies |
| “Automation error — library not registered” | ADOX or a related COM component is not registered | Register the trusted, architecture-matching file |
| “Cannot register msadox.dll” | Wrong file, wrong registration tool, incompatible build, or missing dependency | Stop copying DLLs and verify the file and architecture |
A “specified module could not be found” message does not always mean that msadox.dll itself is missing. Windows may have found the file but failed to load a dependency required by it.

This is the safest and most likely fix when only one program reports the error.
Repair from Windows Settings
- Close the affected application.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
If there is no Repair option, use the program’s original installer or the installer’s maintenance mode.
Repair from Control Panel
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Modify.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
For Microsoft 365 or Office:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps and then Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Modify.
- Try Quick Repair first.
- If the error remains, repeat the process and choose Online Repair.
For an older Access or Visual Basic application, reinstalling the application from its original vendor media may be more effective than repairing Office. The installer may place application-specific database components and registration data that Windows repair does not know about.
If the program is still broken
Uninstall and reinstall it from a trusted original source:
- Back up the application’s databases and configuration files.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Uninstall the affected program.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer as an administrator.
- Install the same supported architecture as before.
- Apply the program’s official updates.
- Test the application before restoring custom settings.
If a game or modern application reports this file, do not assume that msadox.dll is a standard game component. Use that program’s repair or verification feature first. If the file belongs to that application, reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix.
Fix 2: Check whether the file exists and verify its properties
Do not download a replacement yet. First determine whether a trusted copy already exists.
Common locations include:
C:Program FilesCommon FilesSystemado
C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesSystemado
C:WindowsSystem32
The first path is a common shared ADO location. On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit ADO component may be under C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesSystemado. Older installers may have placed files in System32.
To search:
- Open File Explorer.
- Select This PC.
- Enter
msadox.dllin the search box. - Wait for the search to finish.
- Right-click a result and select Open file location.
- Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Check the Details and Digital Signatures tabs.
Confirm that the file description identifies Microsoft Data Access and that the location makes sense for the application. Do not overwrite an existing Windows-protected file manually.
Recommended Free Tools
Historical Microsoft records show different builds across MDAC and Windows generations. Examples include MDAC 2.8 SP1 build 2.81.1128.0, older MDAC builds such as 2.53.6307.0, and Windows-era builds beginning with 6.0 or 6.1. These are historical examples, not a universal current-version list. Microsoft’s MS07-009 bulletin and MS11-002 update information show why the version depends on the Windows or MDAC generation.
Fix 3: Register ADOX only when the error says it is not registered
regsvr32 is appropriate for a genuine COM-registration problem. It is not a universal repair command for every missing-DLL message.
Microsoft documents an ADOX-related case involving the error Automation error — library not registered. In that scenario, registering the existing msadox.dll from the ADO folder is the appropriate remedy. See Microsoft’s Access and FRx library-registration guidance.

Register a 32-bit ADOX file
If the trusted file is in the 32-bit ADO directory, open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run a command similar to this:
C:WindowsSysWOW64regsvr32.exe "C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesSystemadomsadox.dll"
If the 32-bit file is in another verified location, replace the quoted path with that path.
Register a 64-bit ADOX file
For a 64-bit application using a 64-bit file, run:
C:WindowsSystem32regsvr32.exe "C:Program FilesCommon FilesSystemadomsadox.dll"
Microsoft explains that regsvr32 calls a DLL’s DllRegisterServer function in its regsvr32 documentation.
Restart the application after registration. If it opens normally, the issue was likely COM registration.
If regsvr32 reports that DllRegisterServer is missing, the file may be the wrong build, corrupted, incompatible, or not intended for registration. If it reports that the specified module cannot be found, check both the quoted file path and the DLL’s dependencies. Do not repeatedly register arbitrary copies.
Fix 4: Repair Windows component files with DISM and SFC
Use this step when:
- More than one application reports missing or damaged Microsoft components.
- The file is missing from expected Windows locations.
- Windows has recently suffered an interrupted update or system corruption.
- The application repair did not restore the shared component.
Open Command Prompt as administrator:
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until SFC reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected system files against that repaired store. Microsoft documents this sequence in Repair a Windows image and System File Checker.
If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, Microsoft supports using a matching installation source with /Source and /LimitAccess. The source must match the Windows edition and build closely enough to provide the required components.

It is optional, and an application-specific msadox.dll still requires repair or reinstallation of that application.
Interpret the result
- “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations” means SFC found no protected-file problem. Continue with application repair and architecture checks.
- SFC repaired files successfully means restart and test again.
- SFC could not repair some files means review the CBS log, retry DISM, install pending updates, and restart.
- The application still fails means the copy may belong to the application rather than Windows, or a dependency or COM registration problem remains.
SFC is not guaranteed to repair an application-private copy of msadox.dll.
Fix 5: Check antivirus Protection History
Security software can quarantine a file after an update or installer change.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand a detection related to
msadox.dll. - Check the detected path and publisher.
- Do not restore it merely because the filename matches.
Restore or allow the file only when it came from a trusted Microsoft-signed installation or the verified original application installer and additional malware checks support that conclusion. Otherwise, reinstall the application instead. Microsoft explains the available actions in Windows Security Protection History.
Do not create a permanent antivirus exclusion for a DLL simply to make an application launch.
Fix 6: Install pending Windows updates
Windows updates can repair integrated data-access components and servicing problems.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Return to Windows Update and check again.
- Test the affected program.
Do not install MDAC 2.8 blindly on Windows 10 or Windows 11. MDAC 2.8 SP1 was a historical redistributable intended primarily for older Windows systems. Modern Windows uses integrated Windows Data Access Components.
The MDAC 2.8 SDK download is a developer SDK for old operating systems, not a normal end-user repair package. Installing it is not the standard solution for a current Windows DLL error.
Fix 7: Review drivers only when the failure began after a driver change
A display, storage, chipset, or security-driver problem does not normally explain a missing ADOX file. However, if the application began failing immediately after a driver installation or Windows hardware change, review that change rather than assuming the DLL is the cause.
Update or roll back a driver
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Storage controllers, Display adapters, or System devices.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the driver provider and date.
- Choose Update Driver and then Search automatically for drivers.
- If the problem began after an update, choose Roll Back Driver, if available.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Outbyte Driver Updater can make it easier to identify which of many installed drivers is stale; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace repairing the application that actually owns the failing dependency.
Do not use Device Manager to replace msadox.dll; it is for hardware drivers, not ordinary database libraries.

Fix 8: Use System Restore after a clearly related system change
System Restore is a fallback when the problem began after a specific update, driver, or installation and other repairs failed.

- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs, if available.
- Review the programs and drivers that will be changed.
- Select Next and then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally reverts system files, registry settings, and installed programs without removing personal files. It is not a first-line DLL repair. Microsoft’s System Restore guidance explains the process and limitations.
Why downloading msadox.dll is a bad first fix
Avoid random DLL download sites websites and copies supplied by strangers. A replacement may have:
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- A version incompatible with the application or Windows build.
- Missing or incorrect COM registration data.
- A different set of dependencies.
- Corruption or unwanted code.
Copying the file may also hide the real problem, such as an incomplete application installation, an antivirus quarantine, or a missing dependency. It can leave the program failing with a different error.
Use the affected application’s original installer, Windows Update, Microsoft repair tools, or a verified Microsoft-supplied package instead. Do not copy a DLL from another computer unless an administrator has verified the exact Windows build, architecture, digital signature, and servicing source.
If none of the fixes worked
Collect this information before contacting the application vendor or Microsoft support:
- Exact error text and error code.
- Affected program and its version.
- Windows edition and build.
- Whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Full path of any existing
msadox.dll. - File properties and digital-signature details.
- Results from DISM and SFC.
- Antivirus Protection History entries.
- Recent updates, installers, driver changes, or restores.
- Application and Windows installer logs.
If the file exists but the program still fails, focus on the application’s dependencies, COM registration, and supported architecture. Check Event Viewer under Windows Logs > Application for a matching failure. If every repair fails, the program may simply be incompatible with the current Windows release.
FAQ
Is msadox.dll a Windows file or an application file?
It can be either a Windows-integrated data-access component or a file installed with an older application. MDAC was historically distributed separately, while Windows Vista and later integrated the technology as Windows DAC.
Should I install MDAC 2.8 on Windows 11?
No, not as a routine repair. MDAC 2.8 is a historical package for older Windows environments. Modern Windows includes Windows Data Access Components, and indiscriminately layering old MDAC packages can create compatibility problems.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Is msadox.dll part of Microsoft Access?
Access applications can depend on ADOX, but msadox.dll is not exclusively an Access file. Visual Basic applications, accounting programs, ERP software, and other database tools may use it.
Why does Windows say the specified module could not be found when the file is present?
The message can mean that a dependency of msadox.dll is missing or incompatible. It can also indicate a wrong architecture or a damaged installation. Check the application repair, file path, and 32-bit versus 64-bit match.
Should I run regsvr32 for every missing-DLL error?
No. Use it when the error indicates that a COM library is not registered and you have located a trusted, compatible file. It will not repair a missing dependency or replace a missing DLL.
Where does msadox.dll usually live?
Common locations include the shared ADO directory under Program FilesCommon FilesSystemado, its Program Files (x86) equivalent on 64-bit Windows, and, with older installers, a Windows system directory. The location varies by Windows generation, architecture, and installer.
Can System File Checker repair it?
SFC can repair a protected Windows copy when Windows component corruption is the cause. It may not repair a copy installed privately by an application. Repair or reinstall that application when only it is affected.
What is the safest fix?
Start with the exact application and message. Repair or reinstall the affected program, then use the matching ADOX registration only for a genuine “library not registered” error. Use DISM and SFC when broader Windows corruption is plausible, and avoid loose DLL downloads.
