“This application failed to start because msajetfs.dll was not found.”
The msajetfs.dll error usually points to a damaged or incomplete legacy Microsoft Jet application, not a missing Windows 11 system file.

Which fix applies to you

Use the description that matches your situation:

  • The error names an old database, Access, Visual Basic, or business application: repair or reinstall that application first.
  • The error appeared after antivirus activity: check Windows Security protection history before replacing anything.
  • The program was moved to another computer or drive: reinstall it from its original media rather than copying a DLL.
  • The program is decades old and Windows is 64-bit: expect a compatibility problem even if the file is restored.
  • The message says “specified module could not be found” while the DLL is present: a dependency may be missing.
  • You do not recognize the program: identify the executable shown in the error, shortcut properties, Task Manager, or Event Viewer before downloading files.
  • Several Windows components are failing: run DISM and SFC after dealing with the application itself.

Do not begin by downloading msajetfs.dll from a DLL archive or placing it in System32. That approach can install the wrong 32-bit build, hide the real application problem, or introduce an unsafe file.

What msajetfs.dll is

msajetfs.dll is an old 32-bit Microsoft Jet 3.0 component associated with Jet Transport Library and database replication functions. Microsoft historically distributed it with:

  • Microsoft Access for Windows 95 version 7.0
  • Microsoft Visual Basic 4.0
  • Jet components from the Windows NT 4.0 era

Microsoft’s historical Jet update identified the file as version 3.000.3011, approximately 32 KB, with a June 1996 file date. That information describes an old release, not a current Windows build.

This file is not established as a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 component. There is no verified reason to expect it in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64, and it is not the same technology as Jet 4.0, ACE, or the modern Microsoft Access Database Engine.

The error may appear as:

  • “The file msajetfs.dll is missing or corrupted.”
  • “Error loading msajetfs.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “The program can’t start because msajetfs.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “Failed to load msajetfs.dll.”

A “specified module could not be found” message can also mean that a dependency of msajetfs.dll is missing. The named DLL is not always the only file involved.

1. Identify the application that needs the DLL

The application is the most important clue. msajetfs.dll should be restored as part of the program that installed it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the title bar or wording of the error. Then inspect the shortcut:

  1. Right-click the shortcut that produces the error.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Read the Target field.
  4. Note the executable name and its folder.
  5. Select Open File Location if available.
  6. Check whether the folder belongs to an old database, accounting, engineering, Access, or Visual Basic application.

If the error appears during Windows startup, use Task Manager:

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Look for an unfamiliar or legacy program.
  4. Right-click it and choose Open file location.

You can also check Event Viewer:

  1. Press Win + X.
  2. Select Event Viewer.
  3. Open Windows Logs > Application.
  4. Look for an error at the time the message appeared.
  5. Record the failing application name and path.

Do not assume that the program is Microsoft Office simply because the file came from the Jet family. The affected application may be a separate program that uses an old database engine.

2. Repair or reinstall the owning program

This is the safest and most likely fix. An incomplete installation, failed update, damaged disk, application removal, or cleanup operation may have removed the file or another Jet dependency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a currently installed program, try Windows repair:

  1. Press Win + I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Open Installed apps.
  4. Find the program identified in the previous step.
  5. Select the three-dot menu.
  6. Choose Advanced options.
  7. Select Repair, if available.
  8. Start the application again.

If that option is unavailable:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs > Programs and Features.
  3. Right-click the affected program.
  4. Choose Repair or Change.
  5. Follow the installer prompts.

Microsoft notes that not every program supports these repair options. If repair is missing or does not resolve the message, uninstall the application and reinstall it from its original installer or trusted vendor media. Back up the program’s databases and configuration files before uninstalling.

A successful repair should do more than make the DLL appear. The application should launch normally, open its database, and complete the operation that previously triggered the error. If the same message returns immediately, the installer may not support modern Windows or may be missing an older prerequisite.

3. Check antivirus quarantine

Windows Security or another antivirus product may have quarantined a legacy DLL. This is possible, but the quarantine record is needed before treating antivirus as the cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In Windows Security:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security and open it.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Choose Protection history.
  5. Filter or inspect entries from the time the application stopped working.
  6. Expand an entry to view its path and action.

Restore a quarantined file only when all of these are true:

  • The original path belongs to the known application.
  • The program came from trusted installation media.
  • The file is clearly associated with that program.
  • Your security product does not identify it as an active threat.

If the file came from an unofficial DLL download, do not restore or allow it. Remove it and reinstall the parent application instead. Microsoft explains the risks of restoring quarantined items in its guide to Protection History.

After restoring a legitimate file, launch the application again. If protection history immediately quarantines it again, stop forcing the restore and investigate the installer, the file’s provenance, and the application’s compatibility.

4. Use the historical Jet update only for a confirmed Jet 3.0 program

The old Microsoft update was named msjtwng.exe. Microsoft described it as an update for Jet 3.0 DLLs included with Access 95, Visual Basic 4.0, and Windows NT 4.0-era components. Its listed files included Msajetfs.dll and other Jet libraries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is relevant only when you have confirmed that the affected program belongs to that product family. The historical material is available through an archive rather than a current supported Microsoft download page. Its present authenticity and suitability for modern Windows have not been established, so do not treat it as a routine Windows update.

Prefer this order:

  1. Locate the original Access 95, Visual Basic 4, or application installation media.
  2. Reinstall the complete product or its documented update.
  3. Use the historical Jet package only when its source and integrity are trusted.
  4. Keep the files with the legacy application rather than placing them in Windows system directories.

Do not install the Microsoft Access Database Engine 2016 package expecting it to supply msajetfs.dll. That package provides separate ACE connectivity components and is not a replacement for Jet 3.0.

5. Do not copy the DLL into System32 or use regsvr32 blindly

Copying a downloaded DLL into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 is not a repair strategy. It can create version conflicts, place a 32-bit file in the wrong location, and make future application servicing more difficult.

Copying a verified original file into the application’s own directory can sometimes help a controlled legacy setup, but only when the exact version, architecture, and original application path are known. Reinstalling the owning program remains preferable.

regsvr32 also does not generally repair this problem. It is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A missing Jet runtime or transport library is not fixed merely by registering it.

If you run:

regsvr32 msajetfs.dll

an entry-point, architecture, or dependency error does not prove that the DLL is corrupt. It may simply be the wrong operation for this library. Microsoft documents the purpose and syntax of regsvr32.

6. Repair Windows components if other files are failing

Because msajetfs.dll is not established as a current protected Windows component, DISM and SFC are secondary checks. Use them when Windows itself is showing other corruption symptoms, applications are failing broadly, or the error began after a system problem.

Open Command Prompt as administrator:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click it.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Wait for it to finish, then run:

sfc /scannow

Restart Windows and test the affected program. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its System File Checker instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repeatedly running SFC without identifying the calling application will not rebuild a missing Jet 3.0 installation.

If manually hunting through Windows components and interpreting repeated SFC/DISM results is slowing you down, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair requires the full version. Reinstalling the application that owns msajetfs.dll remains the definitive fix for this file.

7. Check drivers only when the wider failure points there

A graphics, storage, or chipset driver does not normally provide msajetfs.dll, so Device Manager is not a primary fix for this error. Check drivers only if the application began failing alongside broader hardware or device problems.

To inspect them:

  1. Press Win + X.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand categories with a warning icon.
  4. Right-click the affected device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.

For a damaged device driver, use Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver when the option is available, or obtain the driver from the computer or device manufacturer. Do not expect a driver update to install Jet 3.0.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If identifying which of many installed drivers is outdated is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show the driver status; installation of drivers requires the full version. It is not a substitute for reinstalling the legacy application that owns msajetfs.dll.

8. Account for 32-bit compatibility

msajetfs.dll is a 32-bit Win32 component. A 32-bit application can sometimes run on 64-bit Windows, but the surrounding Access 95, Visual Basic 4, or database program may depend on installation behavior that modern Windows no longer supports.

The correct architecture is determined by the application loading the DLL, not by whether Windows itself is 64-bit. Installing a 64-bit ACE or Office component will not convert a Jet 3.0 application into a modern program.

If reinstalling restores the file but the program still fails:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click the application executable.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Compatibility tab.
  4. Try a suitable older Windows compatibility mode.
  5. Select Run this program as an administrator only if the application genuinely needs it.
  6. Test the program after each change.

For business-critical software that requires Access 95 or Visual Basic 4, an isolated virtual machine running an appropriate legacy Windows release may be safer than changing modern Windows directories. Keep the virtual machine offline or tightly controlled where practical, and migrate the data to a supported application when possible.

If the error remains after reinstalling

Use this escalation checklist:

  1. Confirm the executable path that produces the message.
  2. Verify that the repaired program is launching, not an old shortcut or stale scheduled task.
  3. Check antivirus protection history again.
  4. Inspect Event Viewer for a missing dependency or access-denied event.
  5. Check the application folder permissions.
  6. Test with a new Windows user profile if the failure appears profile-specific.
  7. Use System Restore if the problem began after a recent system change. Microsoft’s recovery options explain what System Restore changes.
  8. Move the workload to a controlled legacy virtual machine if the application cannot operate reliably on current Windows.

FAQ

Is msajetfs.dll part of Windows 10 or Windows 11?

It is not established as a current Windows system file. It is an old Jet 3.0 component associated with legacy applications.

Should I install Jet 4.0, ACE, or Office?

Not as a blind replacement. Jet 4.0 and ACE are different generations. Install the runtime required by the identified application, preferably through that application’s original installer.

Should I download the DLL separately?

No. Random DLL sites may provide the wrong version or architecture, and the file may be unsafe. A replacement DLL also does not restore missing dependencies or registry and configuration data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does regsvr32 fix it?

Usually not. regsvr32 applies to DLLs designed for self-registration. Reinstalling the application is the correct first repair.

Why did the error appear now?

A damaged installation, failed upgrade, uninstall, disk cleanup, antivirus quarantine, moved program folder, or compatibility change may expose the missing component. The exact cause requires checking the application and system history.

Where should the file go?

Use the location established by the original installer. Do not place it in System32 or `SysWOW64 by guesswork. Reinstalling the owning program is safer than manual copying.

What if the DLL is present but Windows still reports it is missing?

The message may indicate a missing dependency, incompatible architecture, inaccessible folder, or stale application path. Check Event Viewer and reinstall the complete application rather than replacing only the named file.
