“The application or DLL C:WindowsSystem32msansspc.dll is not a valid Windows image.”
If msansspc.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, do not download a replacement before checking for malware.
Which fix applies to you
Use this order:
- The error appeared suddenly, or the file is in
System32: treat it as a possible malware infection and run Microsoft Defender scans first. - Your antivirus removed the file and the error remains: the file may be gone while a startup or registry reference remains.
- The computer has other damaged Windows features: remove any confirmed malware, then run DISM and SFC.
- The message names a specific old application: reinstall that application only from its original developer or publisher.
- The file is outside
System32: do not assume it is safe. Scan the file and check its path, hash, detection name, and persistence. - The problem returns after every restart: inspect persistence and consider a Windows reset or clean installation.
Microsoft identifies msansspc.dll as a filename used by the historical Win32/Bredolab trojan. Bredolab could download and execute additional files, copy itself into the Windows system directory, and configure Windows to load the DLL through the SecurityProviders registry value. See Microsoft’s descriptions of TrojanDownloader:Win32/Bredolab.B and Win32/Bredolab.

That historical association does not prove every file with this name is the same sample. However, there is no reliable Microsoft component listing, supported Windows package, publisher, or legitimate product association for msansspc.dll. Treat the file as suspicious until a security product confirms otherwise.
1. Disconnect and run Microsoft Defender
If you suspect an active infection, disconnect the computer from sensitive office networks, VPNs, and removable storage. Keep internet access available only when needed to obtain security updates or tools from Microsoft.

Run a full scan
- Open Start and select Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan.
- Select Scan now.
- Allow Defender to quarantine or remove detections it identifies.
A full scan checks the running Windows installation and connected storage. When it finishes, open Protection history and record the detection name, file path, and action taken.
Do not restore msansspc.dll from quarantine unless Microsoft or your security vendor explicitly confirms a false positive. The known Microsoft association makes restoration particularly risky.
Run Microsoft Defender Offline
A malware file that loads during startup can interfere with scanning inside normal Windows. Defender Offline starts the scan in the Windows Recovery Environment before the usual Windows session loads.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Save open work.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan).
- Select Scan now.
- Confirm the restart.
The computer restarts and performs the scan outside the normal desktop. After Windows starts again, return to Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history to review the result. Microsoft documents this process in its Defender Offline instructions.
If Defender cannot complete the scan, the machine repeatedly detects the file, or the infection returns after reboot, continue with the second-opinion scan below.
2. Run Microsoft Safety Scanner
Microsoft Safety Scanner is an on-demand malware-removal tool. Download the current msert.exe only from Microsoft’s Safety Scanner download page.
- Open the Microsoft download page on the affected computer or a clean computer.
- Select the 32-bit or 64-bit download that matches Windows.
- Save
msert.exe. - Right-click the downloaded file and select Run as administrator.
- Accept the license terms.
- Choose Full scan.
- Start the scan and allow it to finish.
- Restart Windows if the tool requests it.
Safety Scanner expires 10 days after download, so download a current copy when you run it. It writes detailed results to:

To open the report, press Windows key + R, enter the path above, and press Enter. If the tool reports msansspc.dll or related persistence, follow the removal instructions from the security product rather than copying a clean-looking DLL over the detected file.
3. Remove a leftover startup reference
Sometimes antivirus software removes a malicious DLL but leaves the registry entry that attempted to load it. Windows then displays messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because msansspc.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “msansspc.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading msansspc.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
These messages do not mean the DLL should be restored.
Microsoft’s Bredolab analysis associates this filename with:
HKLMSYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSecurityProviders
Windows can load security-support-provider DLLs through this area. Microsoft explains the mechanism in its documentation about writing and installing a Security Support Provider.
Inspect this area carefully:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
regedit. - Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Browse to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSecurityProviders - Right-click the key and select Export.
- Save the backup somewhere you can find later.
- Record any value that refers to
msansspc.dll, including its complete path.
Do not delete the entire key. Do not remove an entry merely because its name looks unfamiliar. Let Defender or a qualified incident-response technician remove confirmed malicious values. If you must make a manual change, export the key first and remove only the confirmed reference.
If the error disappears after the security product cleans the persistence entry, restart Windows and confirm that the message does not return. Recheck Protection history and the Safety Scanner log.
4. Repair Windows after malware removal
Run Windows repair commands only after malware cleanup. DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components; they do not remove malware or safely recreate msansspc.dll.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for the operation to complete.
- Restart Windows.
The command may take time and can appear to pause. Let it finish. If it reports that the operation completed successfully, continue with SFC.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and enter:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Typical outcomes include:

- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart Windows and test the affected application.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: repeat DISM, restart, and run SFC again. If it still fails, use Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance.
Manually repeating repair commands without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow. Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan that shows reported issues before its full version performs repairs, but it is optional and does not replace malware removal. For this filename, reinstalling an application is definitive only when the original vendor confirms the file is genuinely part of that application.
5. Reinstall the named application only if its vendor confirms it
If the error appears only when launching one old program, identify that program before changing Windows.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Note the application name in the error window.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Locate the application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application developer or publisher.
- Install it using the architecture supported by that application.
- Launch it and check whether the error returns.
Do not assume a game, Office, Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET, or a driver requires msansspc.dll. No credible product association has been verified. Reinstalling those components is not the primary fix for this filename.
If the program offers Repair instead of uninstalling:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the application’s three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the program.
- Use Reset only after saving the program’s settings and data, because Reset may remove local configuration.
A missing file in an application folder can also indicate a damaged installation, but a file in System32 or referenced by SecurityProviders should be handled as a security incident first.
6. Check drivers only when other hardware errors exist
A driver update is not a justified fix for msansspc.dll by itself. Check Device Manager only if the computer also has hardware failures, unexplained device warnings, or a separate application that clearly depends on a vendor driver.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Review the General tab for an error code.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and version.
- Obtain an update from the hardware manufacturer or computer manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test the device.
Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention before its full version installs updates, avoiding the manual work of checking many hardware entries. It is optional, and updating a driver will not remove a malicious msansspc.dll.
Do not use regsvr32 for this file. That command is intended for DLLs that provide the DllRegisterServer entry point, as Microsoft explains in its regsvr32 documentation. Bredolab used a security-provider loading mechanism, not ordinary COM self-registration.
Avoid unsafe DLL fixes
Do not:
- Download
msansspc.dllfrom a random DLL website. - Copy it into
System32,SysWOW64, or an application folder. - Register it with
regsvr32. - Restore it from antivirus quarantine.
- Use an automated registry cleaner as the first response.
- Install unrelated runtimes because a generic DLL error appeared.
- Delete the entire
SecurityProvidersregistry key. - Trust a file solely because its size, timestamp, or apparent signature looks normal.
A downloaded replacement can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, mismatch the calling application, or hide the persistence that caused the error. There are no trustworthy official 32-bit or 64-bit versions of this file to recommend.
When to reset or reinstall Windows
Use a reset or clean installation when scans repeatedly detect the file, persistence returns after reboot, Windows remains unstable, or you cannot establish that the system is clean. Microsoft provides guidance for severe or persistent malware damage.
Before resetting:
- Disconnect unnecessary external drives.
- Back up essential personal documents only.
- Do not back up unknown executables or suspicious DLLs.
- Change important passwords from a clean device.
- Confirm you have installation media, recovery keys, and application installers.
- Choose the reset or clean-install option appropriate for your environment.
System Restore may roll back a persistence change, but it is not a guaranteed malware-removal method.
FAQ
Is msansspc.dll a Windows system file?
There is no reliable evidence that it is a supported Windows component. Microsoft’s authoritative reference associates the exact filename with historical Bredolab malware.
Why is it in System32?
Microsoft documented that Bredolab copied itself into the Windows system directory and configured the SecurityProviders value so Windows would load it. A System32 location does not prove legitimacy.
Is there a safe 64-bit or 32-bit download?
No trustworthy official version or architecture was verified. Do not use DLL download sites listings that advertise unexplained versions or file sizes.
Can SFC restore msansspc.dll?
No. SFC repairs protected Windows components. It should not be expected to recreate a file associated with malware.
Should I reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not as the primary fix. No credible evidence connects this filename to those runtimes.
What if the error appears after antivirus removal?
The file may have been removed while a startup or registry reference remains. Review the security product’s cleanup result and inspect the SecurityProviders value carefully rather than restoring the DLL.
What if scans find nothing?
Keep the file quarantined, record its path and hash if available, and check for persistence. If Windows continues to show the error or behaves abnormally, have the machine assessed by a qualified technician or reinstall Windows.
