windows.applicationmodel.background.systemeventsbroker.dll is a genuine Windows component, not a game-specific DLL or a Visual C++ redistributable file. If Windows says it is missing or cannot load it, repair Windows first instead of downloading a replacement DLL.

What this DLL does
The filename belongs to the Windows.ApplicationModel.Background Windows Runtime infrastructure. That infrastructure coordinates background work for compatible Windows applications. Microsoft also documents the related SystemEventsBroker service as an always-installed Windows service that coordinates background activity for WinRT apps.

This does not mean a particular game or application installed the DLL. It is part of Windows itself. A program may trigger the error because it requests a Windows component that is damaged, missing, blocked, or unable to load one of its dependencies.

Check the file location and signature
A normal 64-bit Windows installation can contain:
C:WindowsSystem32Windows.ApplicationModel.Background.SystemEventsBroker.dllC:WindowsSysWOW64Windows.ApplicationModel.Background.SystemEventsBroker.dll
Despite its name, SysWOW64 stores 32-bit system files on 64-bit Windows. System32 stores the native 64-bit copy. This naming is a long-standing Windows compatibility design.
Do not swap these copies. A 32-bit application may need the 32-bit file, while a 64-bit process needs the native copy. A wrong architecture can produce a load failure even when the filename appears correct.
To check a copy:
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the reported location.
- Right-click the DLL and select Properties.
- Open Digital Signatures.
- Select the Microsoft signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid digital signature.
The filename alone cannot prove that a file is safe. A copy in a game folder, Downloads folder, temporary directory, or an unrelated application directory deserves more suspicion than a correctly signed copy in the Windows directory.

You may see one of these messages:
- “The program can’t start because Windows.ApplicationModel.Background.SystemEventsBroker.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “This application failed to start because Windows.ApplicationModel.Background.SystemEventsBroker.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading Windows.ApplicationModel.Background.SystemEventsBroker.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Windows.ApplicationModel.Background.SystemEventsBroker.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These messages do not all prove that the named DLL itself is absent. Windows loads a DLL’s dependencies separately, so “the specified module could not be found” can refer to a dependent module. Microsoft describes this behavior in its DLL search-order documentation.
If only one application displays the message, that application may have a damaged package or dependency. If Windows components and multiple applications fail, system corruption or a failed update is more likely.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates first
A failed or incomplete update can leave protected Windows components out of sync.

- Select Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not insist on a restart.
- Test the affected application again.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart and test again.
If the machine is still using an obsolete Windows build, upgrading to a supported release is safer than preserving that exact DLL version. Microsoft identifies builds 10586 and 14393 with older Windows 10 releases. Windows 10 Home and Pro reached end of support on October 14, 2025, although special LTSC and IoT editions follow different lifecycle rules.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source for protected files. Run DISM before SFC.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to reach completion.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows after SFC finishes.
- Launch the affected program again.
A successful result may say that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and repaired them. If the error remains, run the DISM command again, restart, and run SFC a second time.
If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, do not copy a DLL from another computer. Review the DISM and CBS logs, install pending updates, and consider Windows recovery or official installation media if servicing remains damaged.
If you would rather avoid repeatedly guessing which repair command changed the system, Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows what it finds; repair actions are handled by the full version, and it is not required when DISM and SFC solve the problem.
Check only this file
After repairing Windows, you can perform a targeted verification. For the native 64-bit copy, run:
sfc /verifyfile=C:WindowsSystem32Windows.ApplicationModel.Background.SystemEventsBroker.dll
For the 32-bit copy on 64-bit Windows, run:
sfc /verifyfile=C:WindowsSysWOW64Windows.ApplicationModel.Background.SystemEventsBroker.dll
The targeted check verifies the protected resource; it is not a substitute for the general DISM-before-SFC repair when several components may be damaged.

Fix 3: Repair the affected application
If the error appears only when starting one packaged application, repair that application rather than assuming it supplied the Windows DLL.
Windows 11 Store or packaged apps
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- If Repair changes nothing, use Reset and test again.
Reset can remove the application’s local settings or data, so use it only after Repair and after confirming that important data is synchronized or backed up.
Windows 10 apps
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
- Select the application.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, then Reset only if necessary.
For conventional desktop software:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Right-click the affected program.
- Choose Repair, if available.
- Otherwise uninstall it and reinstall it using the developer’s official installer.
For a game, use the launcher’s official Verify, Repair, or Scan files function. Do not place this Windows DLL in the game directory. There is no reliable public evidence that a particular game uniquely requires this file.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software or a cleanup utility can remove a damaged or suspicious-looking file.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Open Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the DLL.
- Check the recorded path and detection details.
Restore a quarantined file only if it is in the genuine Windows directory and its Microsoft signature is valid. Do not blindly add a Windows folder or DLL to antivirus exclusions. If the file was found outside the Windows directories, scan the system before restoring anything.
Run a Quick scan from Windows Security. If malware is suspected, use a deeper scan and follow Microsoft’s recovery options if normal repair cannot be trusted.

Fix 5: Investigate architecture and dependencies
If the file exists and is correctly signed but still fails to load, the problem may be a dependency rather than the target DLL.
Check these details:
- Which executable produces the error.
- Whether that executable is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Whether the failing process is loading from
System32orSysWOW64. - Whether the error began after an update or application installation.
- Whether other Windows applications show similar failures.
Do not install Visual C++ packages merely because a DLL error appeared. Visual C++ redistributables provide files such as vcruntime and msvcp; they do not provide this Windows background broker DLL. Install or repair Visual C++ only when the error names a Visual C++ runtime file.
Fix 6: Reinstall a related driver only when evidence points to it
This DLL is not a driver component, so driver reinstall is not a primary fix. Consider Device Manager only if a separate driver problem began at the same time.
- Right-click Start.
- Open Device Manager.
- Look for a warning icon or a device named in the separate error.
- Right-click that device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For graphics, audio, chipset, or capture hardware, obtain drivers from the hardware manufacturer or Windows Update. If you are manually hunting through many driver versions, Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan showing outdated drivers; driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is unnecessary when no separate driver fault exists.

Escalation when repair fails
Use these steps in order:
- System Restore: Press
Win+R, enterrstrui.exe, and select a restore point from before the failure began. - Repair reinstall: On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now, when available. This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings.
- Official installation media: Use Microsoft’s Windows 11 download page or Windows 10 download page for a supported repair path.
- WinRE servicing: If Windows will not boot, use the Windows Recovery Environment. Drive letters can change there, so identify the actual Windows volume before using offline SFC commands.
- Storage diagnostics: If DISM and SFC repeatedly fail, investigate disk health or broader profile corruption.
What not to do
Do not download the DLL from a random website
A downloaded DLL can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, have an incompatible build, lack a valid Microsoft signature, or fail because the real problem is a missing dependency. It can also overwrite a protected Windows file and make servicing more difficult.
The safe sources are Windows Update, DISM, SFC, official Windows installation media, and a controlled offline repair performed with matching official media.
Do not copy it from another PC
Two computers can have different Windows editions, builds, architectures, servicing states, and dependency versions. Manual copying is appropriate only for controlled administrator-led offline servicing using identical official media. It is not a normal consumer repair.

Do not run regsvr32
regsvr32 is for self-registering OLE and ActiveX DLLs that expose DllRegisterServer. This Windows Runtime component uses Windows Runtime activation rather than that registration model. Running regsvr32 is likely to produce an entry-point-not-found error and will not restore the component.

Is this DLL a virus?
Not by filename alone. A valid Microsoft signature and a location under the appropriate Windows directory support authenticity. An unsigned copy in an application folder should be investigated and scanned.
Is it part of Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a game?
No evidence supports those associations. It is a Windows background-task component. Repair the operating system unless the failure is clearly limited to one damaged application.
Why does the message name a DLL that exists?
The named file may be present while one of its dependencies is missing, incompatible, or blocked. The exact executable, architecture, signature, and event timing matter.
Should I use the System32 copy or the SysWOW64 copy?
Do not choose manually. Windows redirects 32-bit and 64-bit processes to the appropriate system directory. Never replace one with the other.
What information should I provide when asking for help?
Include the exact error text, affected executable, Windows edition and build, full DLL path, digital-signature result, DISM result, SFC result, and whether the problem affects one application or Windows more broadly.
