If Windows or an application says that mscandui.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows first rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The file is identified as MSCANDUI Server DLL and is associated with Microsoft Windows Operating System. It is commonly found at %WINDIR%System32. Its precise internal function is not clearly documented by Microsoft, but older Windows file references associate it with Windows input-method and language infrastructure.

Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes, plus a restart
This is the safest first repair when the file is missing from Windows or several programs are affected. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while System File Checker repairs protected system files using that store.

Then run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows after both commands finish, then open the program that produced the error.
Microsoft’s documented System File Checker procedure recommends repairing the Windows image with DISM before running SFC.
How to interpret the result
- “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations” means SFC did not find damaged protected files. Continue with the application and dependency checks below.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them” means the repair found a problem. Restart and test the affected program.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them” means the repair is incomplete. Restart Windows, run DISM again, and then run
sfc /scannowonce more. - If DISM cannot find source files, use pending Windows updates or matching Windows installation media as a repair source rather than copying
mscandui.dllfrom another computer.
If the manual DISM and SFC process leaves you repeatedly hunting through logs and rerunning commands without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows issues; its free scan shows what it identifies, while repair features are completed with the full version.

A failed or incomplete Windows update can leave system components inconsistent. Install pending updates before attempting more invasive recovery.
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
- Run DISM and SFC again if the error remains.
To run the Windows Update troubleshooter:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Troubleshoot.
- Select Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update.
- Select Run.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Select Update & Security.

Then run the troubleshooter:
- Open Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Troubleshoot.
- Select Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Run the troubleshooter.
Microsoft provides additional Windows Update troubleshooting guidance.
After the update process completes, test the affected application. If the error remains, repeat the DISM and SFC commands because the update may have supplied files needed for servicing.
Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
Windows Security or another antivirus product may quarantine a system file after a detection. Quarantine is only one possible cause, so do not assume every missing DLL was removed by antivirus software.
Check Microsoft Defender Protection History
- Open Start.
- Type
Windows Security. - Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
If you find an entry for mscandui.dll, inspect its location and detection details before taking action. Restore a file only when all of the following are true:
- It is located in the expected Windows directory.
- Its publisher or signature identifies Microsoft.
- The detection is clearly a false positive or has been resolved by updated security definitions.
- You have not found signs that the file is malware.
Microsoft warns that restoring a valid detection can expose the device. See Microsoft’s Protection History guidance.
If the file was removed and you cannot verify it, do not restore a copy downloaded from elsewhere. Run a full security scan, then use DISM and SFC to restore the Windows component.
Do not create a permanent Defender exclusion just to make the error disappear. An exclusion prevents Defender from scanning the excluded file or location. Microsoft explains this risk in its Virus and threat protection guidance.
Fix 4: Determine whether one application or Windows itself is failing
Time needed: 5 to 20 minutes
The wording of the error helps identify the scope:
- “The program can’t start because mscandui.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because mscandui.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting mscandui.dll.”
- “Error loading mscandui.dll.”
- “mscandui.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
If multiple unrelated programs fail, or Windows features also behave abnormally, treat the issue as Windows corruption and continue with DISM, SFC, Windows Update, and recovery options.
If only one program fails, the named DLL may be a dependency that the application expects, or the application may be reporting a failure to load one of its related modules. In that case, repair the application from its official publisher.
Repair an installed application
The exact menu depends on the program, but the Windows route is:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its menu or advanced options.
- Choose Repair if available.
- Restart the application and test it.
If Repair is unavailable or does not help, uninstall the program, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the publisher’s official installer. Save your settings or game data first if the application requires that.
For a game, use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity command. The launcher should restore the game’s own files without placing an arbitrary DLL in the Windows directory. No specific game has been established as the normal owner of mscandui.dll, so do not assume that a game-specific DLL package is appropriate.
Fix 5: Check the file location and system architecture
Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes
On a typical Windows installation, the expected system location is:
Rank #2
- MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
%WINDIR%System32mscandui.dll
To open that location:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
%WINDIR%System32
- Select OK.
- Search for
mscandui.dll.
Do not interpret the name System32 as meaning “the 32-bit folder.” On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system files. The 32-bit system directory is normally:
%WINDIR%SysWOW64
Microsoft documents this behavior in its file-system redirector documentation.
A 32-bit application can need the 32-bit Windows copy even when the computer runs 64-bit Windows. A 64-bit application needs the 64-bit copy. Windows normally handles this separation through its system directories and file-system redirection.
Do not replace a file merely because another copy has a newer-looking version number. Public inventories list both 32-bit and 64-bit builds, including examples from different Windows releases, but those inventories are not an official Microsoft compatibility table.
If a copy appears beside the application
A copy in an application folder is not automatically legitimate. DLL search rules can cause Windows to load a file from the application directory before loading the intended system component. Microsoft describes this risk in its DLL search order documentation.
If mscandui.dll exists only in an unexpected download folder or beside an application, do not register or move it into System32. Use Defender, DISM, SFC, and the application’s official repair process instead.
Fix 6: Repair a related Windows language or input component
Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes
mscandui.dll is associated cautiously with Windows input-method and language infrastructure. If the error began after changing display languages, adding an input method, or removing language components, check the installed language settings.
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Time & language.
- Select Language & region.
- Review the installed languages and language options.
- Select the affected language.
- Open its language options.
- Confirm that the required keyboard or input method is installed.
- If a language component is incomplete, remove and add the language again.
- Restart Windows.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Select Time & Language.
- Select Language.
- Review the installed languages.
- Select the affected language.
- Open Options.
- Confirm that the required keyboard or input method is present.
- Remove and re-add the language only if its installation is clearly damaged.
- Restart Windows.
These steps are not a substitute for DISM and SFC when the system DLL itself is corrupted. They are useful when the failure began after a language-pack or input-method change.
Do not remove random entries from Windows Features to fix this file. mscandui.dll is not established as a standalone optional feature, and enabling or disabling unrelated features is unlikely to restore it.
Fix 7: Update a driver only when the error involves a device
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
A printer, scanner, keyboard, or other input device can expose a separate driver problem at the same time as a Windows DLL error. However, mscandui.dll is a Windows component, not a confirmed printer-driver or game-driver file. Update a driver only when Device Manager shows a warning or the application clearly fails while using a particular device.

- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories related to the failing device, such as Keyboards, Human Interface Devices, Printers, or Imaging devices.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
If the problem started immediately after a driver update:
- Right-click the device in Device Manager.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if available.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Use the hardware manufacturer’s official support page if Windows cannot locate a suitable driver. Do not download a DLL merely because a driver installer mentions one.
When a device has many possible driver versions and manually identifying the correct package is the main obstacle, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for reported driver problems; its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation is completed with the full version.
Fix 8: Use Windows 11 repair reinstall
Time needed: 30 minutes to over an hour
On supported Windows 11 installations, the recovery settings may offer a repair reinstall that preserves apps, files, and settings while reinstalling the current Windows version.

Why you should not download mscandui.dll
There is no official Microsoft download page for mscandui.dll as an individual file. Downloading a DLL from a random repository can provide:
- Malware or a tampered file.
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- A build intended for a different Windows release.
- A file with missing dependencies.
- A file that creates DLL search-order or hijacking problems.
- A temporary copy that does not repair the Windows component store.
The safe sources are Windows servicing, Windows Update, an official Windows repair reinstall, System Restore, or matching Microsoft installation media. Do not copy the file beside a game or application unless that program’s official support instructions specifically require a vendor-supplied component.
Why regsvr32 is usually not the answer
regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft documents its purpose in the regsvr32 command reference.
Recommended Free Tools
Some analysis of one mscandui.dll sample reports registration-related exports, but that does not prove that manual registration is required for every Windows build. There is no Microsoft instruction to register this file as a standard repair.
regsvr32 cannot restore a missing or corrupted Windows component. Using the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit registration tool can also produce an architecture error. Use DISM and SFC instead.
Likely causes of the error
| Possible cause | What points to it | Appropriate response |
|---|---|---|
| Corrupted or missing Windows files | Several programs fail, or SFC reports corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Failed Windows update | The problem began after an update or restart | Run Windows Update troubleshooting, install updates, then repair |
| Antivirus quarantine | Protection History shows the file or a related detection | Verify the path and Microsoft signature, then repair Windows |
| Damaged application | Only one program fails | Repair or reinstall that application |
| Language or input-method change | The error began after changing language components | Check language settings, then run DISM and SFC |
| Architecture mismatch | A 32-bit program is given a 64-bit copy, or vice versa | Restore the component through Windows, not manual copying |
| Disk corruption or malware | Repeated file loss, unexplained system damage, or detections | Run security scans, inspect disk health, and use recovery options |
Installing Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET is not a targeted fix for a Windows-owned mscandui.dll. Those runtimes may be relevant to a different missing-DLL message from the same application, but they do not replace Windows servicing.
If the error says “specified module could not be found”
That wording does not always mean the named DLL itself is absent. Windows can find mscandui.dll but fail to load one of its dependencies. This is another reason that copying a replacement file is unreliable.
Check the following:
- Confirm whether the error affects one application or many.
- Run DISM and SFC.
- Repair or reinstall the affected application.
- Check whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Remove any manually copied DLL from the application directory if it is not supplied by the official vendor.
- Review Windows Security and Event Viewer for related errors.
Avoid downloading dependency files individually. Repair the Windows component or the application that owns the dependency chain.
FAQ
Is mscandui.dll a Windows file?
Yes. It is identified as MSCANDUI Server DLL, published by Microsoft Corporation, and associated with Microsoft Windows Operating System.
Is mscandui.dll part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No evidence identifies it as one of those redistributable runtimes. Treat it as a Windows component and begin with DISM and SFC.
Where should mscandui.dll be located?
The common Windows location is %WINDIR%System32. On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit system components use %WINDIR%SysWOW64.
Should I download mscandui.dll?
No. There is no official Microsoft standalone download page for this file. Restore it through Windows servicing, Windows Update, repair reinstall, System Restore, or installation media.
Should I run regsvr32 mscandui.dll?
Not as a general fix. Registration does not restore a missing Windows component, and the wrong tool can create an architecture error.
Can a game cause this message?
A game can report a Windows DLL loading failure, but no particular game is established as the canonical owner of mscandui.dll. Use the game launcher’s official Verify or Repair function if only that game fails.
What should I collect if the problem continues?
Record the Windows version and build, the affected executable, the complete error text, the path where any copy of the file appears, Defender Protection History, relevant Event Viewer entries, and the final DISM and SFC results. If SFC cannot repair the file, also preserve %WINDIR%LogsCBSCBS.log for support.
