mscorjit.dll Won’t Load: Repair the Right .NET Runtime Safely

By VGSources Team 16 min read

Start with this diagnostic checklist

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before changing anything, treat mscorjit.dll as a Microsoft .NET Framework loading problem rather than a file you should download separately. The mscorjit.dll error usually means that an older program cannot load the .NET runtime it was built to use.

Check these details first:

  • Which program or game shows the error?
  • Does the error appear when you launch the program, during installation, or while Windows starts?
  • Does only one application fail, or do several older .NET programs fail?
  • Did the problem begin after Windows Update, an application reinstall, antivirus activity, cleanup software, or a system crash?
  • Are you using Windows 10, Windows 11, or another Windows release?
  • Is the program 32-bit or 64-bit?
  • Does the error say that mscorjit.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded?

Press Win + R, type winver.exe, and press Enter to record the Windows version and build. Keep that information available because the correct .NET Framework installation method depends on the Windows release.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The safest repair order is:

  1. Enable or install .NET Framework 3.5.
  2. Repair the .NET installation and Windows component store.
  3. Repair the affected application or game.
  4. Check antivirus quarantine and Windows Update.
  5. Investigate architecture, drivers, and system recovery only if the earlier steps fail.

What mscorjit.dll is

mscorjit.dll is the Microsoft .NET Runtime Just-In-Time Compiler. It is a genuine Microsoft file that ships as part of Microsoft .NET Framework, not as a standalone application dependency that should normally be downloaded from a file library.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Just-In-Time compiler converts managed .NET code into instructions that the processor can run while the program is executing. An old Windows application or game may therefore fail at startup when its expected .NET Framework runtime is missing, disabled, damaged, or mismatched.

Microsoft documents the relationship between the .NET Framework generations in its guide to “.NET Framework versions and dependencies”. The important distinction is:

  • .NET Framework 1.0 and 1.1 belong to an older CLR generation.
  • .NET Framework 2.0, 3.0, and 3.5 share CLR 2.0.
  • .NET Framework 4.x uses CLR 4.

That is why installing .NET Framework 4.8 does not automatically replace every component required by an application built for .NET Framework 2.0 through 3.5. .NET Framework 3.5 includes the 2.0 and 3.0 layers and is usually the correct first repair for a modern Windows system running an older program.

On a typical Windows installation, the file may appear in one of these directories:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\mscorjit.dll
C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727\mscorjit.dll

The Framework directory contains the 32-bit runtime files. The Framework64 directory contains the 64-bit runtime files.

Microsoft servicing records show that separate x86 and x64 builds exist. A file version such as 2.0.50727.8977 is associated with different file sizes for the two architectures. Older x86 examples include versions 2.0.50727.5467 and 2.0.50727.5456. These are historical examples, not universal latest versions. The correct build depends on the Windows version, installed updates, architecture, and servicing branch.

Do not choose a replacement file by comparing its version or size with a result found online. Repairing the framework installs the matching set of runtime files and supporting components together.

What the error message means

A common message is:

Unable to load JIT Compiler: (mscorjit.dll): file may be missing or corrupt. Please check or rerun setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This wording tells you that the application could not load the .NET JIT compiler. It does not prove that the named file alone is corrupt. The file may be absent, the required .NET Framework feature may be disabled, a dependency may be damaged, or the application may be loading the wrong architecture.

You may also see Windows loader wording like:

  • The program cannot start because mscorjit.dll is missing from your computer.
  • The code execution cannot proceed because mscorjit.dll was not found.
  • Error loading mscorjit.dll.
  • mscorjit.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or contains an error.
  • The specified module could not be found.

These are variations of Windows loader messages. They do not identify separate, definitive causes. In particular, “the specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency of mscorjit.dll is missing rather than the named file itself.

Fix 1: Enable or install .NET Framework 3.5

This is the most likely fix when an old program fails on a clean Windows installation, after a Windows upgrade, or after the .NET Framework feature was removed.

Windows 11 25H2 or earlier

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Windows Features.
  3. Select Turn Windows features on or off.
  4. Find .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0).
  5. Select its checkbox.
  6. Select OK.
  7. Allow Windows to download or install the required files.
  8. Restart Windows if prompted.
  9. Launch the affected program again.

If the program starts normally, the missing runtime was the likely cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Windows reports that it cannot download the required files, do not download mscorjit.dll manually. Continue to the offline installation method below or repair Windows components first.

Windows 11 26H1 or later

Microsoft changed the delivery method for .NET Framework 3.5 on Windows 11 26H1, build 28000, and later. The feature is provided as a version-specific standalone installer rather than through the normal Windows optional-feature workflow.

Open Microsoft’s Windows 11 .NET Framework 3.5 installation page and download the installer that matches the installed Windows release. Microsoft’s package is named DotNet35Setup.exe. The associated language pack is DotNet35LPSetup.exe.

After downloading:

  1. Close the affected application.
  2. Right-click the Microsoft installer.
  3. Select Run as administrator.
  4. Follow the installation prompts.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Test the application again.

If you are unsure which Windows 11 release is installed, run winver.exe before choosing the package. Do not use an installer intended for a different Windows 11 release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016

Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016 normally provide .NET Framework 3.5 as a Windows feature. Use the Windows Features method first. You can also enable it from an elevated Command Prompt:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
  6. Run:
DISM /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:NetFx3 /All

Wait for DISM to finish. A successful operation should report that the feature was enabled. Restart Windows and test the program.

If the command reports that the source files could not be found, use installation media that matches the installed Windows version:

DISM /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:NetFx3 /All /LimitAccess /Source:D:\sources\sxs

Replace D: with the drive letter assigned to the mounted Windows installation media.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The media must match the installed Windows version and servicing state closely enough for Windows to use the component files. Microsoft warns that mismatched media can leave Windows unsupported or unserviceable. Follow Microsoft’s DISM deployment guidance for .NET Framework 3.5.

Older supported Windows systems

For older supported systems, Microsoft provides the .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 package. Choose the package intended for the operating system and installation type rather than downloading an individual DLL.

Very old software may target .NET Framework 1.1 instead of the CLR 2.0 family. Do not install obsolete framework generations blindly. First check the application’s documentation, installer requirements, or publisher support information.

Fix 2: Repair .NET Framework and Windows components

If .NET Framework 3.5 is already enabled but the error remains, the installation or Windows component store may be damaged. This can happen after an interrupted update, failed setup, disk problems, aggressive cleanup software, or broader system corruption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run the Microsoft .NET Framework Repair Tool

Microsoft provides the Microsoft .NET Framework Repair Tool.

  1. Download the tool from Microsoft.
  2. Close running applications.
  3. Right-click NetFxRepairTool.exe.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Accept the Microsoft license terms.
  6. Allow the tool to inspect and repair supported .NET Framework components.
  7. Apply any recommended changes.
  8. Restart Windows.
  9. Try the affected program again.

Microsoft’s support documentation also describes a quiet repair command for .NET Framework 3.5:

NetFxRepairTool.exe /q /r .net35

Run that command from the directory containing the downloaded tool, using an elevated Command Prompt if required.

Microsoft’s Support article and Download Center page have displayed different release metadata for the Repair Tool at different times. Use the current Microsoft download rather than relying on a version number copied from an older guide.

Running DISM and SFC repeatedly while guessing what changed is tedious, especially when Windows gives you several repair stages. Outbyte PC Repair can use a free scan to show exactly what is wrong; the repair is done by the full version, and it remains optional because Microsoft’s built-in steps are the primary repair path.

Repair the Windows component store

Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Leave the window open until the command completes. DISM may take time and may appear to pause while it checks or repairs the component store.

A successful result indicates that the restore operation completed. Restart Windows before moving to the next command.

Repair protected system files

After DISM completes, run:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.

SFC may report one of several outcomes:

  • No integrity violations were found. Windows did not find protected system-file corruption.
  • Corrupt files were found and repaired. Restart and test the application.
  • Corrupt files were found but some could not be repaired. Run DISM again, restart, and run sfc /scannow a second time.
  • The requested operation could not be performed. Restart into normal Windows and repeat the scan from an elevated Command Prompt.

Microsoft describes DISM as the broader Windows component-store repair tool and SFC as the protected-system-file checker in its guide to repairing a Windows image.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If .NET Framework 3.5 still does not work after DISM and SFC, return to Windows Features and disable the .NET Framework 3.5 feature. Restart, enable it again, restart once more, and test the application.

Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the affected application

If only one program or game reports the error while other older .NET applications work, the application installation may be damaged.

Use the application’s own repair option first:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find the affected application.
  5. Select its menu button.
  6. Choose Advanced options, Modify, or Repair if available.
  7. Restart the application.

If no repair option exists, uninstall and reinstall the program from the publisher’s official installer. Keep saved games and application data if the program stores them separately.

For a game installed through Steam, use the client’s file verification feature:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Steam.
  2. Open Library.
  3. Right-click the game.
  4. Select Properties.
  5. Open Installed Files.
  6. Select Verify integrity of game files.
  7. Wait for the verification to finish.
  8. Launch the game again.

Game-file verification repairs the game installation. It does not repair Windows .NET Framework, so enable or repair .NET Framework 3.5 separately when the game requires it.

If reinstalling the application restores the program but the same error returns after every update, record the application path and contact the publisher. A launcher, updater, installer, or plug-in may be the component that actually requires the older runtime.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software may quarantine a runtime file after an update, a false detection, or a damaged installer. This is more likely when the error appeared immediately after an antivirus notification.

For Microsoft Defender:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Windows Security.
  3. Open it.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Review recent quarantined items.
  7. Select an item only after confirming that it belongs to the affected Microsoft .NET Framework installation.
  8. Use Restore only when you have verified that the detection is a false positive.

Do not restore an unknown DLL simply because its name is mscorjit.dll. Check the file location, publisher information, and detection details first. Reinstalling the framework from Microsoft is safer than restoring an unverified loose file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run a Microsoft Defender scan after reviewing the quarantine history. If other suspicious files or unexpected startup programs appear, disconnect the computer from sensitive accounts and investigate the security issue before trusting restored runtime files.

Fix 5: Install Windows updates

A failed or incomplete update can leave a Windows component or .NET Framework servicing operation unfinished.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Windows Update.
  4. Select Check for updates.
  5. Install the available updates.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Check for updates again after the restart.
  8. Test the affected program.

Microsoft documents this process in its Windows Update instructions.

If the error began immediately after an update, do not assume that the update itself is defective. First complete pending updates, repair .NET Framework, and run DISM and SFC. User reports can associate the error with Windows Update without proving a general Windows Update bug.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 6: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

Windows can contain both 32-bit and 64-bit .NET Framework runtime files. A 32-bit application running on 64-bit Windows may require the x86 copy under:

C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\

A 64-bit application may require the x64 copy under:

C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727\

The operating system’s architecture does not automatically tell you the application’s architecture. An old 32-bit game can run on 64-bit Windows and still require the 32-bit framework files.

Do not copy a file from Framework64 into Framework, or the reverse. Do not select a file because its size appears to match an online listing. The correct repair installs the complete framework for the required architecture and Windows servicing branch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To inspect a file that already exists:

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Browse to the relevant Microsoft .NET Framework directory.
  3. Right-click mscorjit.dll.
  4. Select Properties.
  5. Open the Details tab.
  6. Record the file description, version, and product information.
  7. Open Digital Signatures if available and inspect the signer.

A file named mscorjit.dll outside the expected Microsoft .NET Framework directories deserves extra scrutiny. An application folder copy may be old, altered, or unrelated to the installed runtime. Do not replace it manually before identifying which executable is loading it.

Fix 7: Update a driver only when Windows identifies a driver problem

mscorjit.dll is not a graphics, chipset, storage, sound, or other hardware driver. A driver installer may launch a .NET-based setup program, but reinstalling a driver is not a primary fix for a missing JIT compiler.

Use Device Manager only when you also see a separate driver symptom:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the device category related to the separate problem.
  4. Right-click the affected device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Open the General tab and review the device status.
  7. Open the Driver tab.
  8. Select Update Driver if a current driver is available from the hardware vendor.
  9. Restart Windows.
  10. Test the original application again.

If the device status is normal and the only symptom is the mscorjit.dll error, return to .NET Framework repair instead of changing drivers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hunting through Device Manager and vendor pages to find stale drivers can take time when you do not yet know whether a driver is involved. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver problems and identify what needs updating; its free scan shows the findings, while installing the drivers is done by the full version, and it is optional.

Do not use regsvr32 for mscorjit.dll

Do not run:

regsvr32 mscorjit.dll

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is commonly used with certain COM or ActiveX components. mscorjit.dll is a .NET CLR implementation component, not a DLL that should be manually registered.

Microsoft explains the registration model and common regsvr32 errors in its Regsvr32 troubleshooting documentation.

If regsvr32 reports that the module was loaded but the entry point could not be found, that does not repair the runtime. It only confirms that the command was not appropriate for this file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not download or copy a loose DLL

Avoid downloading mscorjit.dll from random DLL download websites, file catalogs, forums, or another person’s computer. A loose file can have:

  • The wrong architecture.
  • The wrong CLR generation.
  • An incompatible servicing build.
  • Missing companion files.
  • An altered or malicious payload.
  • A location that bypasses normal Windows servicing.

The runtime also depends on related framework components. Replacing one file may change the error without restoring a working .NET installation.

Do not copy the file into:

C:\Windows\System32
C:\Windows\SysWOW64

Do not copy it into the game or application directory unless the application’s official publisher specifically documents a private runtime deployment. A normal Windows .NET Framework installation should be repaired through Windows Features, Microsoft’s installer, Windows servicing, or the official .NET repair tool.

The safe sources are Microsoft’s Windows .NET Framework 3.5 installation guidance, the official .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 package, and the official .NET Framework 4.8 download, selected according to the application’s requirements.

Why Visual C++ and DirectX usually do not fix this error

Visual C++ Redistributable packages and DirectX provide different runtime components.

Install Visual C++ Redistributable only when the application separately reports a Visual C++ runtime error. Install or repair DirectX only when the program separately reports a DirectX or graphics component error.

Neither package is a substitute for .NET Framework 3.5. If the application requires CLR 2.0, the relevant repair is the .NET Framework 2.0 through 3.5 family.

Use System Restore only when the timing is clear

System Restore can help when the error appeared immediately after a system change and a restore point exists from before the failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Create a restore point.
  3. Open the result.
  4. Select System Restore.
  5. Choose a restore point created before the mscorjit.dll problem began.
  6. Review the affected programs and drivers.
  7. Start the restore operation.
  8. Allow Windows to restart.

Microsoft describes System Restore in its system restoration documentation.

System Restore is not guaranteed to reconstruct a valid .NET Framework installation. If the problem remains, enable or repair .NET Framework 3.5 and run DISM and SFC. If no restore point clearly predates the failure, skip this step rather than restoring blindly.

When the error may be an old installer problem

Some very old .NET Framework 1.0 or 1.1 installers could display a JIT compiler setup error when installation was delayed by system load. In that historical scenario, closing nonessential programs and rerunning setup could allow the installation to complete.

That does not explain every modern missing-DLL error. If a current application reports that mscorjit.dll cannot load, begin by identifying its required .NET Framework generation and repairing the matching Microsoft runtime.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Advanced check: identify the actual failing executable

If all framework repairs succeed but the error continues, identify which executable is producing it.

Record:

  • The exact application or game name.
  • The full path to its executable.
  • The exact error text.
  • The Windows version and build from winver.exe.
  • Whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  • Whether the program targets .NET Framework 1.x, 2.0–3.5, or 4.x.
  • Whether the error affects one program or multiple programs.
  • The path of any mscorjit.dll found on the system.
  • The file version and publisher information.
  • The time the error occurred.
  • What changed immediately before it appeared.
  • Any antivirus detection or quarantine record.
  • Relevant Event Viewer details.
  • Any .NET Framework installation or repair logs.

To inspect Event Viewer:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Event Viewer.
  3. Open Windows Logs.
  4. Select Application.
  5. Look for entries recorded at the time of the failure.
  6. Open entries mentioning the affected executable, .NET Runtime, application errors, or Windows servicing.
  7. Copy the general description and faulting application path.

Do not post an entire event log containing personal information. Preserve the exact error text and the relevant application path, then provide those details to the application publisher or Microsoft support.

Frequently asked questions

Is mscorjit.dll safe?

It is a legitimate Microsoft .NET Runtime Just-In-Time Compiler file when it is located in the expected Microsoft .NET Framework directory and carries valid Microsoft publisher information. A copy found in an unusual application folder should be checked before it is trusted.

Should I put mscorjit.dll in System32?

No. Do not manually copy it into System32, SysWOW64, a game folder, or an application folder. Repair the appropriate .NET Framework installation instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Windows 11 need .NET Framework 3.5?

An application built for .NET Framework 2.0 through 3.5 may need it even when newer .NET versions are installed. Windows 11 25H2 and earlier normally provide it through Windows Features. Windows 11 26H1 and later use a version-specific standalone installer.

Will .NET Framework 4.8 fix mscorjit.dll?

Not necessarily. .NET Framework 4.8 belongs to the CLR 4 family. Applications built for .NET Framework 2.0 through 3.5 generally require the CLR 2.0 family, which is supplied through .NET Framework 3.5.

Is mscorjit.dll part of Visual C++ Redistributable?

No. It is part of Microsoft .NET Framework. Visual C++ Redistributable repairs a different runtime family.

Is mscorjit.dll a graphics driver file?

No. A graphics or chipset installer may be written in .NET, but mscorjit.dll itself is a .NET runtime component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I run regsvr32 mscorjit.dll?

No. regsvr32 is not an appropriate repair for this CLR component.

Why does Windows say “the specified module could not be found” when the file exists?

The loader may be unable to find a dependency required by mscorjit.dll. The message does not prove that the named file is the only missing component.

Should I install every .NET Framework version?

No. Identify the application’s target framework first. Multiple .NET Framework generations can coexist, but obsolete runtimes should not be installed without a compatibility reason.

What if SFC finds corruption but cannot repair it?

Run:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Restart Windows, then run:

sfc /scannow

If the error continues, repair or reinstall .NET Framework 3.5 after Windows component repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the error remains after all these steps?

Confirm the exact executable that fails, its architecture, the Windows build, the .NET Framework generation it requires, and the path of the runtime file being loaded. Collect the corresponding Event Viewer entry and installation logs, then contact the application publisher or Microsoft support with those details.

The correct end state is a matching, Microsoft-supplied .NET Framework installation and a working application. It is not a loose replacement copy of mscorjit.dll.
