mscortim.dll is a .NET Framework runtime file, and errors naming it usually mean an older application cannot load the CLR 2.0 layer it needs. The safest fix is to repair or re-enable .NET Framework 3.5, not to download an isolated DLL.

Start with this diagnostic checklist

Before changing anything, note:

  • Which program or game displays the error
  • Whether the error appears at launch, during installation, or after an update
  • Whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit
  • Whether the problem began after Windows Update, antivirus activity, cleanup software, a failed .NET installation, disk trouble, or an application reinstall
  • Whether the message says the file is missing, could not be loaded, could not be located, or is not a valid Windows image

On a 64-bit Windows installation, a 32-bit application may use files under:

C:WindowsMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv2.0.50727

A 64-bit process may use:

C:WindowsMicrosoft.NETFramework64v2.0.50727

The presence of 64-bit Windows does not mean every application needs the Framework64 copy.

Fix 1: Enable .NET Framework 3.5

Microsoft documents that .NET Framework 3.5 includes .NET Framework 2.0 and 3.0, which share the CLR 2.0 runtime layer. That is why installing only a newer .NET release does not always resolve an older application’s mscortim.dll error.

Windows 11 and Windows 10

  1. Press Windows, type Windows Features.
  2. Select Turn Windows features on or off.
  3. Find .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0).
  4. Select its check box.
  5. Select OK.
  6. If Windows asks to download files, choose Let Windows Update download the files for you.
  7. Restart the computer when prompted.
  8. Start the affected program again.

If the program opens normally, the missing framework component was the likely cause.

You can also use Microsoft’s instructions for installing .NET Framework 3.5 if the Windows Features dialog shows an error.

If Windows cannot download the feature

A Windows installation USB or mounted ISO can provide the required component files. Replace X: with the drive letter assigned to your installation media.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Insert the Windows installation media or mount the ISO.
  2. Right-click Start and select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
  3. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  4. Run:
DISM /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:NetFx3 /All /Source:X:sourcessxs /LimitAccess
  1. Wait for the command to finish.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the affected application.

The source must match the installed Windows edition and build closely enough for the component installation to work. Microsoft explains this method in its guidance for .NET Framework 3.5 installation errors.

If the command reports that source files could not be found, check the drive letter and confirm that the media contains a sourcessxs folder. Do not copy mscortim.dll alone from the media.

Running repeated DISM and SFC commands by hand can make it difficult to tell which repair changed the system. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the damaged Windows components involved; its free scan shows what it finds, while repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and repairing or reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when that program is damaged.

Fix 2: Repair Windows component files

If .NET Framework 3.5 is already enabled, the component store or protected system files may be damaged.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
  3. Approve the security prompt.
  4. Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to reach completion. This can take time.
  2. Without closing the administrator window, run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart the computer.
  3. Open the affected application.

DISM repairs the Windows component store. System File Checker checks protected Windows resources. Microsoft provides additional detail in its documentation for repairing a Windows image and using System File Checker.

If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test the program again. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, run DISM once more, restart, and repeat sfc /scannow.

Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the affected application

The application that displays the message may have a damaged installation even when .NET itself is healthy. This can happen after an interrupted update, cleanup utility, incomplete uninstall, or disk problem.

Try the application’s repair option

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find the affected program.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  6. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Start the program again.

Some desktop applications instead provide their own Repair option in Control Panel:

  1. Press Windows, type Control Panel, and open it.
  2. Select Programs.
  3. Select Programs and Features.
  4. Select the affected application.
  5. Choose Repair or Change, if offered.
  6. Follow the installer prompts.

For a game, use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or Scan and repair function before reinstalling the entire game.

Reinstall from the developer’s official installer

If repair is unavailable or fails:

  1. Uninstall the affected application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Obtain the installer from the application developer’s official source.
  4. Install the program again.
  5. Restart if the installer requests it.
  6. Test the application before adding optional plugins or modifications.

Do not assume that reinstalling the application will repair .NET Framework. If the same error returns immediately after a clean reinstall, return to Fix 1 and repair the framework.

Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows may need the 32-bit .NET files in the Framework directory. A 64-bit application may use Framework64.

To check your Windows architecture:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select About.
  4. Look at System type.

To check an application’s architecture, consult its official documentation or ask its developer. The application’s installation directory can also provide clues, but a folder name alone is not conclusive.

Do not copy a file from Framework to Framework64, or the reverse. The correct repair is to install the framework component through Windows Features or an official Microsoft installer so that its companion files, servicing information, and permissions remain consistent.

Installing .NET Framework 4.x alone also does not necessarily provide the .NET Framework 2.0/3.0/3.5 layer required by legacy software.

Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software may quarantine a framework file after a detection or a suspected installation problem. Quarantine does not prove that the file is safe. It may be a false positive, or it may indicate tampering.

  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Find the event involving mscortim.dll.
  5. Read the detection name, file path, and action.
  6. Do not restore the file automatically.
  7. If the file is confirmed as the genuine Microsoft framework file and the detection is a false positive, follow Microsoft’s quarantine restoration guidance.
  8. If the detection is uncertain, leave the file quarantined and repair .NET Framework through Windows Features instead.

Run a full Microsoft Defender scan if the file was found outside the normal .NET directories, particularly if it appeared in a temporary folder or an application folder without a clear reason.

Fix 6: Install pending Windows updates

A failed servicing operation can leave an optional Windows component incomplete.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart when requested.
  6. Try enabling .NET Framework 3.5 again.
  7. Test the affected program.

If Windows Update repeatedly fails, use the installation-media DISM command in Fix 1 rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

Fix 7: Check drivers only when the failure points to hardware

A driver update is not a normal fix for mscortim.dll. Investigate drivers only if the application also reports graphics, audio, printer, storage, or other hardware failures.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category related to the failing hardware.
  4. Look for a warning icon.
  5. Right-click the device and select Properties.
  6. Read the message under Device status.
  7. Select the Driver tab.
  8. Use Update Driver or obtain the driver from the hardware manufacturer.
  9. Restart Windows and test the application.

Manually identifying stale drivers across Device Manager can mean hunting through many hardware entries and comparing versions. Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers it identifies as outdated; the free scan reports the findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional and does not replace repairing .NET when the framework is the actual cause.

Do not download or register mscortim.dll manually

Avoid DLL download sites and unofficial file mirrors. An isolated DLL may contain malware, belong to the wrong architecture, use an incompatible servicing build, or lack companion files required by the CLR. Placing it in System32 can create a second problem without repairing the damaged framework.

regsvr32 is also generally inappropriate here. It is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A CLR runtime implementation file is not normally repaired by registering it, so this command is not a solution:

regsvr32 mscortim.dll

Use Windows Features, official Microsoft installation media, or Microsoft’s .NET Framework Repair Tool instead.

If the error remains after all repairs

A message naming mscortim.dll can be secondary. The actual failure may involve another framework file, a dependent module, the application itself, or a permissions problem.

Collect these details before contacting the application developer:

  • The complete error text
  • The application name and version
  • The application’s installation path
  • Whether the process is 32-bit or 64-bit
  • Whether mscortim.dll exists under Framework or Framework64
  • The result of DISM and SFC
  • Any Windows Security quarantine event
  • The date the problem began
  • Whether another Windows account can start the program

Check Event Viewer for related application errors:

  1. Press Windows, type Event Viewer, and open it.
  2. Expand Windows Logs.
  3. Select Application.
  4. Find an error recorded at the time the program failed.
  5. Read the Faulting application, Faulting module, and exception details.

If the application works under another Windows account, the original user profile may be damaged. If it fails for every account after .NET repair and application reinstall, the application vendor is the appropriate next contact.

Frequently asked questions

Is mscortim.dll a Windows system DLL?

It is a Microsoft .NET Framework runtime file, but it is not normally a standalone System32 DLL. It belongs in the framework’s versioned directories.

Which .NET version does it require?

The relevant layer is the CLR 2.0 layer used by .NET Framework 2.0, 3.0, and 3.5. On Windows 10 and Windows 11, enable .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I install .NET Framework 4.x instead?

Not necessarily. .NET Framework 4.x does not automatically replace every legacy application dependency on the 2.0/3.0/3.5 layer.

Should I copy the file into System32?

No. Install or repair the correct framework component instead.

Will reinstalling the affected program fix it?

It can if the application installation is damaged. If the framework component itself is missing or corrupted, repair .NET Framework first.

What if the file exists but the error continues?

Check the application architecture, dependent modules, Event Viewer, antivirus history, and the application’s own repair or verification feature. The named file may not be the only damaged component.
