The exact message matters. Also record the complete path shown in the error. A file under %WINDIR% points toward Windows repair. A copy beside one program’s executable may indicate that the application was altered or is incorrectly shipping a Windows component.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Servicing updates can replace damaged protected files and repair dependencies without manual copying.

Windows 11
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Reopen the program or test Wi-Fi.
Windows 10
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart Windows.
If the same error returns, continue with component repair. Do not download wlansec.dll from a search result.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the safest general repair when the file is missing from System32, fails its integrity check, or several Windows components are affected. DISM repairs the Windows component store first; System File Checker then restores protected files from that repaired store.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish. It can remain at one percentage for several minutes.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the failing program or WLAN AutoConfig.
A successful SFC result says that Windows Resource Protection did not find integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. If SFC says it could not repair some files, do not copy a random DLL into System32. Run DISM again after installing pending updates, then inspect the SFC details:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
Open sfcdetails.txt on the desktop and look for entries involving wlansec.dll or related wireless components.

Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying Windows issues and show what needs attention, while repairs are performed by the full version; it is optional, and Microsoft’s built-in commands remain the appropriate first repair.
Fix 3: Check WLAN AutoConfig
If the error appears during startup, Wi-Fi connection, or an svchost.exe crash, check the service associated with the file.
- Press Win+R.
- Type:
services.msc
- Press Enter.
- Find WLAN AutoConfig.
- Double-click it.
- Set Startup type to Automatic if it is disabled.
- Click Start if the service is stopped.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Restart Windows and test Wi-Fi.
You can also start the service from an elevated Command Prompt:
net start wlansvc
If Windows reports that the service cannot start, note the exact error and check Event Viewer:

- Press Win+R.
- Enter
eventvwr.msc. - Open Windows Logs > System.
- Look for errors at the time of the failure.
- Check whether the fault names
WLANSEC.dll,wlansvc,svchost.exe, or the wireless adapter driver.
A WLAN AutoConfig failure is different from a program that merely reports a missing DLL during launch. The service branch is relevant when wireless networking itself fails.
Fix 4: Repair or roll back the wireless adapter driver
A driver update can expose a WLAN service problem, but reinstalling a driver does not normally replace a missing Windows system DLL. Use this step when Wi-Fi stopped working, WLAN AutoConfig crashes, or Device Manager reports an adapter error.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the wireless adapter.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- If the problem began after an update, select Roll Back Driver if available.
- Otherwise choose Uninstall Device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver package only when you have the correct OEM driver ready.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Allow Windows to reinstall the adapter, or install the driver supplied by the computer or adapter manufacturer.
- Test WLAN AutoConfig and Wi-Fi.
Driver packages must match the system and adapter. Avoid forcing an x86 driver onto a 64-bit installation or using a driver intended for a different adapter model.
Manually hunting through driver versions is error-prone, particularly when several network devices are listed. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify stale drivers, while the driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional, and the computer or adapter manufacturer’s driver remains the preferred source.
Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a file after detecting an alteration or suspicious behavior. Do not restore wlansec.dll solely because an application says it is missing.

- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review detections involving
wlansec.dll. - Check the recorded path, detection name, and action.
- If the file was in
%WINDIR%System32and is confirmed as a Microsoft-signed system file, follow your organization’s security policy before restoring it. - If the file was beside an unfamiliar application, leave it quarantined.
- Run a Full scan.
- If malware is suspected, run Microsoft Defender Offline scan.
After a legitimate file is restored, run DISM and SFC. If the file is unsigned, located outside the expected Windows directory, or repeatedly detected, do not restore it. Remove the underlying malware or questionable application instead.
Fix 6: Repair the affected application
If the error appears only when one application or game launches, inspect its installation directory before assuming Windows is the cause.
- Right-click the program’s shortcut.
- Select Open file location.
- Check whether the error refers to a copy of
wlansec.dllbeside the program executable. - Do not replace that copy with a file downloaded from the internet.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not work, use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application data.
- Otherwise uninstall the application.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application developer’s official source and reinstall it.
For a game, use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity function. If the program still requests a Windows system DLL after a clean reinstall, return to DISM and SFC and verify the full path shown in the error.
Do not automatically reinstall Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET for this error. wlansec.dll is not one of those runtimes. Reinstall those components only when the application separately reports that one of them is missing.
Check architecture and file location
A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows through WOW64, but it must load compatible dependencies. Mixing an x86 DLL with an x64 process, or copying a file from a different Windows build, can produce “not designed to run on Windows” errors.
Check the Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > About.
- Read System type.
Check the file:
- Open File Explorer.
- Enter
%WINDIR%System32in the address bar. - Search for
wlansec.dll. - Right-click it and select Properties.
- Check the Details tab for Microsoft Corporation.
- Open Digital Signatures and inspect the signer.
The absence of a file in one directory does not prove that a download is needed. Windows builds and WOW64 redirection affect placement. Repair the installed Windows image instead.
When manual copying is defensible
Manual replacement is a last resort, not the normal fix. It is defensible only when the source is verified and matches the same Windows edition, build, architecture, language, and servicing level. Suitable sources include matching Microsoft installation media or a Microsoft repair mechanism.

Never copy a historical file because its version number appears newer. Do not use a Windows Embedded Compact Wlansec.dll package on desktop Windows. The same filename can belong to a different Microsoft platform.
Why regsvr32 is not the fix
Do not run:
regsvr32 wlansec.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. wlansec.dll is a wireless security module, not a typical self-registering COM control. Registering it will not restore a missing protected Windows component and may produce another error.
If DISM and SFC cannot repair it
If both tools fail, save the DISM and SFC results and try these escalation steps.
Use System Restore
If the problem began immediately after an update, driver installation, cleanup utility, or other system change:
- Press Win+R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point dated before the failure.
- Review the affected programs.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can remove recently installed programs and drivers.
Perform an in-place Windows repair
Use matching Microsoft installation media for the installed edition and language.
- Download official Windows installation media from Microsoft.
- Mount the ISO or open the installation media.
- Run
setup.exe. - Follow the setup screens.
- Select Change what to keep.
- Choose Keep personal files and apps.
- Continue with the repair installation.
- Recheck Windows Update and test the file afterward.
If this option is unavailable, the media may not match the installed edition or architecture.

On Windows Server, Wireless LAN may be an optional feature. Open Server Manager > Add Roles and Features, review the feature list, and install Wireless LAN Service when the server requires wireless networking. This is separate from downloading wlansec.dll.

Is wlansec.dll a Microsoft file?

Should I download wlansec.dll from a DLL website?

Record the exact executable, complete DLL path, Windows build from winver, system architecture, Event Viewer entry, and signature status. The named DLL may be a dependent module rather than the actual root cause.
Can I fix it with Windows Features?
Not on ordinary Windows 10 or 11 desktop installations. WLAN support is built into Windows. On Windows Server, install the documented Wireless LAN Service feature when required, rather than downloading the DLL.
