Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11msdri.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows component, not a file you should normally download from a DLL website. Before repairing it, record:
- The exact program or game that shows the error.
- The complete message, such as “msdri.dll was not found” or “The specified module could not be found.”
- Whether it started after Windows Update, antivirus cleanup, a driver change, disk trouble, or removal of older Windows features.
- Whether the affected application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Whether the problem affects one application or Windows more broadly.
The safest repair is to restore Windows components through Windows Update, DISM, and SFC. If the message belongs to one older application, that application may also need repair or reinstallation.
What msdri.dll is
msdri.dll is associated with Microsoft Digital Receiver Interface Class Driver, a Microsoft Windows component connected historically with Windows Media Center and digital receiver functionality. Microsoft’s Windows 7 Media Center update documentation lists Msdri.dll among the updated files, including an x64 build. Public Windows file inventories also document it in Windows 8 and later Windows 8.1-era files.
The file is normally found in a Windows system directory such as:

The correct location and architecture depend on Windows and the application using it. Documented historical builds include 32-bit versions such as 6.1.7601.17514 and 6.2.9200.16384, along with 64-bit Windows builds. Do not treat those versions as interchangeable or assume that every current Windows installation contains the file.
This is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX package, or .NET component. Installing those redistributables is not the normal fix.
What the error means
You may see messages including:
- “The program can’t start because msdri.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because msdri.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting msdri.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading msdri.dll.”
- “msdri.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean that msdri.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by the DLL. A damaged Windows component, wrong architecture, incomplete update, or legacy application path can produce the same wording.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Start with the least invasive repair.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- On Windows 11, select Check for updates. On Windows 10, open Update & Security > Windows Update, then select Check for updates.
- Install all available quality, security, and servicing updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Open the program that showed the
msdri.dllmessage.
If the error started immediately after an update, install any remaining updates first. If the problem remains, continue with DISM and SFC rather than copying a replacement DLL.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and restores damaged copies from that repaired source.
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears paused.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
A successful result may say that SFC found no integrity violations, or that it found corrupted files and successfully repaired them. If SFC repaired files, restart before testing.
If SFC says it could not perform the requested operation, retry it after DISM completes and Windows restarts. If DISM reports that source files could not be found, use a matching Windows installation source only if you have one that corresponds to the installed Windows edition and architecture:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace the example path with the actual repair-source path. Do not use a downloaded msdri.dll as the source.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRepeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows detected problems, while repair actions are handled by the full version; it is optional, and Windows servicing remains the direct repair path.
Microsoft’s instructions for using DISM and SFC to repair missing or corrupted system files explain the command sequence and result messages.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a legitimate system file after a false positive, or malware removal can leave Windows with a damaged component.
- Open Windows Security from Start.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving
msdri.dllor Windows system files. - If Windows identifies a legitimate file as a false positive, verify the detection carefully before choosing Restore.
- Run a full scan after restoring or repairing the file.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
Do not restore a file simply because its name matches. A random copy from the internet is not a safe replacement. Prefer SFC, DISM, Windows Update, or a verified Windows recovery source.
Microsoft explains quarantine and restoration in its guide to Protection history in Windows Security.

Fix 4: Repair the program or its driver-related installation
The file is categorized as a driver-support component, but the exact application or package requesting it is not established for current software. If only one program produces the error, repair that program before changing unrelated Windows folders.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair. If Repair does not help, select Reset only after confirming that the program’s data is backed up.
- If those choices are unavailable, uninstall the program from the same screen.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the program from its official vendor source.
If the message began after a hardware-driver change, check Device Manager:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category related to the change, such as Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, Storage controllers, or System devices.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider, date, and version.
- Select Update Driver and allow Windows to search, or install the driver from the hardware manufacturer.
- If the problem began after an update and Roll Back Driver is available, use it.
- Restart and test again.
Do not install a driver merely because its package mentions a DLL. Confirm that the device and Windows architecture match.
Hunting through many driver packages and guessing which one is stale is avoidable. Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan that identifies driver issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional, and the manufacturer’s driver remains the preferred source.
Fix 5: Check Windows optional features carefully
Because msdri.dll has a Windows Media Center and digital receiver history, older installations may have errors after legacy media components were removed or altered. This does not mean that enabling a media feature will fix every current error.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Review the available Windows Features list for media-related components.
- Do not enable an unfamiliar feature solely because its name sounds related.
- If a feature was recently disabled, restore it, select OK, and restart Windows.
- Run Windows Update and then repeat the DISM and SFC repair sequence if the error remains.
Current Windows editions do not all expose the same optional features, and the presence of a feature does not prove that it owns the missing file.
Fix 6: Check architecture and dependency problems
A 32-bit application can require an x86 component even on 64-bit Windows. A 64-bit application requires a compatible 64-bit component. Replacing one architecture with another can produce:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- “Not designed to run on Windows.”
- Entry-point errors.
- Immediate application crashes.
- A continued “module not found” message.
Do not copy an x86 file into System32 based on an internet instruction. Do not replace a Windows 7 or Windows 8 build with a file from another release. Let Windows servicing restore the correct version and location.
If SFC reports no integrity violations, the problem may instead be:
- A stale shortcut pointing to an old program.
- A legacy application that was only partially uninstalled.
- A missing dependency.
- An incorrect application path.
- A program that is calling an old Windows component it no longer supports.
For a single affected application, reinstalling that application is usually more useful than changing system directories.
Do not use regsvr32 for this error
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide self-registration or COM registration entry points. A .dll extension alone does not mean that a file should be registered.
Recommended Free Tools
Avoid commands such as:
regsvr32 msdri.dll
unless the software vendor specifically documents that command for the exact package. For this Windows driver-support component, registration is generally not the repair. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation describes its intended registration scope.
When to use System Restore
Use System Restore when the error began directly after a driver installation, software change, or Windows configuration change and a restore point exists from before that event.

When to repair or reinstall Windows
Escalate to Windows recovery when DISM, SFC, updates, antivirus review, and application repair do not resolve the error, especially if multiple Windows components are failing.

FAQ
Is msdri.dll genuine?
Yes. It is a Microsoft Windows system component named Microsoft Digital Receiver Interface Class Driver. Its historical association is strongest with Windows Media Center and digital receiver functionality.
Should I download msdri.dll manually?
Normally, no. Random DLL downloads can provide the wrong version, wrong architecture, an altered file, or malware, and copying the file does not repair the underlying component store or dependency.
Does every Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer contain it?
That cannot be assumed. Public evidence documents the file in Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and some Windows 10-era inventories. Current Windows 11 inclusion is not established here.
Is msdri.dll a graphics or audio driver?
It is a driver-related Windows component, but the available evidence does not identify it as a normal modern GPU, audio, printer, or chipset vendor driver. Use Device Manager only when the error began after a specific hardware-driver change.
What if SFC says there are no integrity violations?
The file may be unrelated to the current failure. Check the affected application, its dependencies, its shortcut path, and its installation. Reinstall that application if only it reports the error.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not as a default fix. msdri.dll is not identified as one of those runtime components. Start with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.
What information is needed for a precise diagnosis?
The exact error text, Windows version, application name, application architecture, file path, recent system changes, and relevant Event Viewer details. Without those details, the message alone cannot prove whether the DLL itself or one of its dependencies is missing.
