“The program can’t start because msgcompo.dll is missing from your computer.” If Windows reports that msgcompo.dll was not found or could not be loaded, the problem is usually a damaged or incomplete Mozilla/Netscape installation, not a missing Windows component.
Which fix applies to you
Choose the situation that best matches what you see:
- The error appears when opening an old Mozilla or Netscape browser, Mail, or Composer: repair or reinstall that exact application.
- The file disappeared after antivirus activity: check Windows Security Protection history before reinstalling.
- The program was copied from another computer or restored from backup: restore the complete application, not just one DLL.
- An old shortcut still launches a deleted program: remove the shortcut or reinstall the application properly.
- The error says “entry point,” “not designed to run,” or mentions another DLL: the files are probably mismatched or the installation is corrupted.
- You no longer need the old program: back up its profile and mail, then remove it and migrate the data.
- Other Windows components are also failing: repair Windows separately with DISM and System File Checker.
What msgcompo.dll belongs to
msgcompo.dll is a historical Mozilla mail-composition component. Mozilla crash records identify it under the application’s components directory, with the internal module name msgcompose and company metadata identifying Mozilla and Netscape.
That location matters. This is an application DLL, not a Windows DLL. It should normally be beside the old Mozilla/Netscape installation, similar to:

The exact installation path can differ. Do not assume that the file belongs in either:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
A historical verified build was a 32-bit Win32 component. A 64-bit version of Windows can run the old 32-bit application, but the application still needs its complete matching 32-bit files.
First identify the application requesting the file
Before downloading or copying anything, identify the executable that is failing.
- Read the full Windows error carefully. Note the application name shown in the title bar or message.
- Right-click the shortcut that launches the program and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, inspect Target. The executable path often reveals whether the program is Mozilla, Netscape, or another legacy application based on that code.
- Select Open File Location if it is available.
- In File Explorer, look for a
componentsfolder beside the executable. - Search that application folder for
msgcompo.dll.
Do not use a broad Windows search as proof that every copy is valid. Multiple old installations, backup folders, and quarantine remnants can make the results misleading.
Also check whether the failure began after one of these events:
- Mozilla or Netscape was uninstalled and reinstalled
- antivirus software quarantined a file
- disk cleanup removed old application files
- an old backup was only partially restored
- the program directory was copied to another computer
- an update or installer failed
- the old program was deleted while a shortcut, startup entry, or file association remained
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the complete Mozilla/Netscape application
This is the safest and most likely fix.
Back up mail and profiles first
Do not uninstall a legacy mail application before preserving its user data.
- Close Mozilla, Netscape, Mail, Composer, and any related process.
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. - Select any remaining Mozilla or Netscape process and choose End task.
- In File Explorer, search for profile folders associated with the application.
- Copy the profile, mail, bookmarks, address books, and settings to an external drive or another safe folder.
- If the application has an export feature, use it as well as making a file backup.
A program reinstall and a profile migration are separate operations. Reinstalling the executable does not guarantee that old mail data will be preserved.
Reinstall from a trustworthy original source
Use the original installer or a verifiable official Mozilla archive for the same legacy application family. Mozilla Suite 1.7.13 was distributed as an official Windows installer and ZIP archive, but it is obsolete and unsupported. Do not treat an archived installer as a modern, secure browser or mail solution.

Win+I. - Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Search for Mozilla, Netscape, or the application named in the error.
- If the application offers Modify, Repair, or Change, use that option first.
- If no repair option exists, select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows if the uninstaller requests it.
- Install the complete matching application package.
- Use the same installation architecture and release family as the existing profile where possible.
- Launch the application once before restoring profile data.
- Confirm that the installation contains a
componentsfolder and that the application starts without the DLL error. - Restore the backed-up profile only after the clean installation launches successfully.
Do not copy msgcompo.dll alone from another Mozilla or Netscape release. Companion libraries, executable exports, configuration files, and profile formats may need to match. Mixing files can replace a “missing DLL” message with an entry-point error or a crash.
How to tell whether this worked
The fix worked if the original executable starts without reporting msgcompo.dll, and its mail or composition functions open normally. If the error remains, record the exact executable path and the full path of every msgcompo.dll found. Multiple partial installations are common in this situation.
Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
A legitimate application file can be quarantined, but the filename alone does not prove that a copy is safe.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the application stopped working.
- Expand any detection that identifies the old Mozilla/Netscape application directory.
- Verify the original path and detection details.
- Restore the file only if you can confirm that it came from a genuine, intact Mozilla/Netscape installation.
- If the source is uncertain, leave it quarantined and reinstall the complete application from a trustworthy official archive.
- Run a full scan after removing any suspicious loose DLL.
Do not disable antivirus protection simply to make the error disappear. Restoring an unverified DLL can introduce a second problem, and reinstalling the parent application is usually safer than restoring one isolated file.

Fix 3: Remove an obsolete shortcut or incomplete installation
Sometimes Windows is still trying to launch an application that was partially removed.
- Right-click the failing shortcut and select Properties.
- Check the Target and Start in fields.
- If the target points to a deleted or incomplete folder, do not create a replacement DLL in that location.
- Delete the obsolete desktop or Start menu shortcut.
- Check Settings → Apps → Startup for an old Mozilla or Netscape entry.
- Open Task Manager, select Startup apps, and disable an obsolete entry if present.
- Check file associations under Settings → Apps → Default apps if opening old mail or HTML files triggers the error.
- If the application is still required, reinstall the complete package instead of removing only the shortcut.
If the old software is no longer needed, backing up its profile and removing the obsolete launch paths is preferable to keeping a damaged legacy application active.
Fix 4: Use System Restore for a recent rollback or cleanup problem
System Restore can help if the failure began immediately after a program removal, cleanup operation, or failed change. It is not a replacement for reinstalling the application.
- Press
Win+R. - Type
rstrui.exeand press Enter. - Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm that you understand which applications and drivers may be affected.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
If the application directory was deleted or the profile is important, preserve your current backup before using System Restore. Afterward, test the original application and reinstall it if msgcompo.dll is still absent.

msgcompo.dll is not a protected Windows system file, so SFC and DISM normally will not restore it. Use these commands when Windows itself shows broader corruption, such as multiple built-in applications failing, update errors, or damaged system components.
- Right-click Start and select Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Mozilla or Netscape application again.
Success means DISM or SFC reports that the operation completed and any Windows corruption was repaired. If msgcompo.dll is still missing, reinstall the parent application. Repeating SFC will not recreate a third-party Mozilla file.

Fix 6: Treat driver and runtime advice as a separate issue
msgcompo.dll is not a device driver, and there is no verified reason to install a graphics, printer, audio, or chipset driver to replace it. Do not use Device Manager as a way to register or repair this application file.
If the same computer has a separate hardware problem:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the affected device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- If that fails, select Properties → Driver and record the provider and version.
- Obtain the correct driver from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart and test the hardware separately from the Mozilla application.

Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no verified indication that this Mozilla mail-composition module is a self-registering COM server.
Running this command is therefore not a normal repair:
regsvr32 msgcompo.dll
It may produce an entry-point error and will not restore missing companion files. Registering the DLL is different from making an application load its private component directory.

- the wrong Mozilla or Netscape release
- the wrong architecture
- modified or bundled with malware
- missing required companion files
- incompatible with the executable already installed
Do not copy the file into System32, SysWOW64, or beside an unrelated application. The safe source is the complete original installer or a trustworthy official Mozilla archive, followed by a full application reinstall.

Collect these details before troubleshooting further:

A persistent error after a complete reinstall may indicate a damaged executable, permissions problem, incompatible compatibility setting, duplicate application directory, or a dependency failure rather than a missing msgcompo.dll.
Prevention and migration
Keep a backup of old Mozilla/Netscape profiles before changing the installation. Avoid copying an entire program directory between computers unless the application specifically supports that method.
Mozilla Suite is end-of-life. If you only need old mail, bookmarks, or HTML files, migrate or convert that data to a supported modern application and remove the obsolete program afterward. Keeping a legacy browser or mail suite installed solely to satisfy one missing DLL leaves the underlying compatibility and security problems in place.
