Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchmsh_zwf.dll is a missing legacy Microsoft IntelliPoint mouse component, not a normal Windows system file. The safest fix is to repair or reinstall the original IntelliPoint software that requests it, or remove that obsolete software and its startup entry if you no longer need it.
What this file actually does
msh_zwf.dll was historically used by Microsoft IntelliPoint, also called Microsoft Pointing Device Software. Historical installations placed it in an application folder similar to:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
C:Program FilesMicrosoft HardwareMouseMsh_zwf.dll
The file is associated with POINT32.EXE, an old IntelliPoint mouse utility that provided extra wheel and pointing-device features. It is a 32-bit application component, even though 32-bit programs can run on 64-bit Windows.
This does not mean that msh_zwf.dll belongs in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Application DLLs normally stay beside the program that uses them. Current Windows 10 and Windows 11 do not normally require this legacy file for ordinary mouse operation.

Historical records contain multiple IntelliPoint-related builds, including 4.00.0657.0000, 4.10.0851.0000, and another archived record identified as 1.31.110.0. These are historical records, not interchangeable versions. The correct file is the one installed by the matching IntelliPoint package.
Causes and symptoms
| What you see | Most likely cause | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| Error appears when Windows starts | IntelliPoint or POINT32.EXE is still configured to launch |
Repair the software or remove its stale startup entry |
| Error appears when mouse features initialize | The IntelliPoint installation is incomplete or damaged | Reinstall the original mouse software |
| Windows Security shows a detection | The DLL may have been quarantined | Review Protection history before restoring anything |
| The file exists but the error remains | Another dependency of the application may be missing | Reinstall the complete application |
| Error began after uninstalling mouse software | An orphaned startup command remains | Remove the confirmed stale startup item |
| A copied DLL produces a new error | Wrong build, architecture, or dependent files | Remove the copied file and reinstall the full package |
| Several Windows features also malfunction | Possible system component corruption | Run DISM and SFC as secondary checks |
Common loader messages include:
- “This application failed to start because msh_zwf.dll was not found.”
- “The file msh_zwf.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: msh_zwf.dll. Please install the application again.”
- “Error loading msh_zwf.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The program can’t start because msh_zwf.dll is missing from your computer.”
The wording is useful, but it does not by itself identify the correct repair. Find the application named in the dialog and confirm which program is launching it.
Fix 1: Identify the program requesting the file
Before changing Windows folders, identify the caller.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheck the error dialog
Read the title bar and the line above the missing-file message. It may identify POINT32.EXE, IntelliPoint, or another old mouse utility.
If the dialog names a different application, repair that application instead. Do not assume every msh_zwf.dll message comes from IntelliPoint.
Check shortcuts
- Right-click the shortcut that triggers the error.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, inspect Target and Start in.
- Look for a path containing
Microsoft Hardware,Mouse,IntelliPoint, orPOINT32.EXE. - Select Cancel when finished.
Check startup apps
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for IntelliPoint, Microsoft mouse software,
POINT32, or an entry whose location points to the old mouse folder. - Right-click the entry and select Open file location if that option is available.
- Record the path before disabling anything.
If the file location no longer exists, the entry is probably stale. Disable only the confirmed old mouse entry, then restart Windows. If the error disappears, you have identified the caller.
Search for the executable
- Open File Explorer.
- Select This PC.
- In the search box, enter:
POINT32.EXE
- Allow the search to finish.
- Right-click any result, select Open file location, and inspect the surrounding files.
A genuine historical IntelliPoint installation should have its executable and support files together in an application directory. An unexpected location deserves an antivirus check before you restore or run anything.

Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the original IntelliPoint software
Use this fix when you still need the old mouse features or the error appears when POINT32.EXE starts.
Uninstall the damaged installation
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for IntelliPoint, Microsoft IntelliPoint, or Microsoft mouse software.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the matching program.
- Choose Uninstall and follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows.
If the program is not listed, check Control Panel:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Look for IntelliPoint or Microsoft Pointing Device Software.
- Select it and choose Uninstall.
Reinstall the matching package
Use the original CD, OEM recovery media, or a verified Microsoft-provided installer that matches the mouse software. Avoid replacing only the DLL.
If the installer is very old, right-click it, select Properties, open Compatibility, and try a suitable earlier Windows compatibility mode. Run the installer with Run as administrator if Windows permits it.
After installation:
- Restart Windows.
- Move the mouse wheel and test any IntelliPoint-specific buttons or settings.
- Confirm that the startup error no longer appears.
- Check that
msh_zwf.dllis inside the application’s own installation directory, not copied into a Windows system folder.
If reinstalling restores the file but the error continues, the application may depend on another missing file. Reinstall the complete package again rather than downloading individual DLLs.

Fix 3: Restore a file quarantined by Windows Security
Antivirus software may have removed a legitimate old file, or it may have detected an impersonating file.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open the detection related to
msh_zwf.dll. - Check the original path and detection details.
Restore the file only when all of these conditions are true:
- The path is the known IntelliPoint installation directory.
- You trust the complete original installer.
- The detection is understood and not an active malware warning.
- You will immediately repair or reinstall the full application and scan the installer.
Do not create a broad exclusion for System32, SysWOW64, or an entire drive. If the file was found in an unexpected directory and there is no trusted IntelliPoint installation, leave it quarantined and run a full scan.

Fix 4: Remove obsolete IntelliPoint startup software
If you no longer use the old mouse utility, removing it is safer than rebuilding a legacy component.
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Uninstall IntelliPoint or the old Microsoft mouse program.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Disable a confirmed IntelliPoint or
POINT32entry that still remains.
Also inspect the Startup folders:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
shell:startup. - Press Enter.
- Remove only a shortcut that clearly points to the uninstalled mouse software.
- Repeat with
shell:common startup.
If the error still appears, check the program’s uninstall entry and startup path before editing the registry. Remove only a confirmed stale command. Do not delete arbitrary registry values based solely on the filename.
Windows already provides basic pointer settings through Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Mouse on Windows 11, or Settings → Devices → Mouse on Windows 10. Microsoft’s current Mouse and Keyboard Center is a replacement path for supported Microsoft peripherals, with separate 32-bit and 64-bit installers, but its current download information does not establish that it contains this legacy DLL.
Fix 5: Check architecture and version matching
Historical msh_zwf.dll records describe a 32-bit IntelliPoint component. A 64-bit Windows computer can run that type of program, but the application still needs the correct build and supporting files.
Do not copy a DLL from another IntelliPoint release just because the filename matches. A mismatched build can cause an entry-point error, initialization failure, or another crash after the original missing-file message disappears.

Fix 6: Update or reinstall related mouse drivers
A driver update will not normally recreate an application-local msh_zwf.dll, but it can help when the mouse itself, its buttons, or its modern replacement software is also malfunctioning.

Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through several device entries and guessing which driver is stale; its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation through the full version is optional. Reinstalling the IntelliPoint application remains the definitive fix when that application is the one requesting msh_zwf.dll.
Do not use Windows Features to look for this file. Turn Windows features on or off controls optional Windows components and does not reinstall an IntelliPoint application DLL.
Fix 7: Run DISM and System File Checker only when Windows is also damaged
Because msh_zwf.dll belongs to old mouse software rather than the protected Windows component store, SFC and DISM usually will not restore it. Use them when other Windows components are failing, Windows Update is damaged, or SFC reports broader system corruption.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the original application again.
Success means DISM and SFC complete without reporting unresolved corruption, and related Windows functions work normally. If the msh_zwf.dll message remains, reinstall or remove IntelliPoint; do not expect SFC to recreate an application file.
Outbyte PC Repair can make the manual process of repeating system checks less guess-based by showing detected issues in its free scan; repairs through the full version are optional, and Microsoft’s DISM/SFC commands remain the direct Windows method.
Why System32, SysWOW64, and regsvr32 are poor fixes
Copying msh_zwf.dll into System32 or SysWOW64 can introduce a wrong version, obscure the real installation problem, and create conflicts with other applications. The correct location is normally the folder belonging to the program that loads the DLL.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do not run:
regsvr32 msh_zwf.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide the DllRegisterServer registration entry point, commonly COM or ActiveX components. There is no reliable evidence that this IntelliPoint support DLL is a self-registering COM component. Registering it will usually fail or do nothing useful, and it cannot repair a missing dependency of POINT32.EXE.
If no original installer is available
First decide whether the old utility is necessary. If you only need normal pointer movement, scrolling, and button configuration, uninstall the legacy software and use Windows settings.
If a special mouse feature is essential, look for the original manufacturer media or a verified Microsoft package intended for that particular device. Do not treat archived DLL files as interchangeable, and do not install a standalone copy from a random download page.

FAQ
Is msh_zwf.dll a Windows system file?
Apparently not. It is historically associated with Microsoft IntelliPoint, which is application software rather than a core Windows component.
Can I download just msh_zwf.dll?
That is unsafe and often ineffective. A download may contain malware, the wrong 32-bit build, or a file with incompatible dependencies. Repair the complete original application instead.
Should I copy it to System32?
No. Keep the DLL in the application directory installed by IntelliPoint.
Why does Windows say the file is missing when it is present?
The named DLL may depend on another missing module, or the program may be looking in a different directory. Reinstall the complete parent application and verify which executable launches it.
Will Windows 11 or Windows 10 need this file for a modern mouse?
Normally no. Modern mouse functions use Windows support or current device software, not this legacy IntelliPoint component.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What if the error returns after uninstalling IntelliPoint?
Look for a stale entry in Task Manager → Startup apps and the Startup folders. Confirm its path, disable or remove only the old IntelliPoint shortcut, and restart.
Should I run System Restore?
It can help if the problem began immediately after an uninstall or cleanup and a restore point predates that change. It is secondary to repairing the original software or removing its stale startup entry.
