“The program can’t start because apimswincoreerrorhandlingl110.dll is missing from your computer.”
The name apimswincoreerrorhandlingl110.dll is usually a mangled search version of api-ms-win-core-errorhandling-l1-1-0.dll, a Windows API-set contract that an application may request when it starts.

Which fix applies to you
Use the symptom that best matches your computer:
- Only one game or program fails: repair, update, verify, or reinstall that application first.
- Several programs fail: install Windows updates, restart, then run DISM and SFC.
- The error started after an application update: use the application’s Repair, Verify, or Scan and repair feature.
- It started after antivirus activity: check Protection history before restoring anything.
- The application is old: check whether it supports your installed Windows version and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- It began after a driver or Windows change: update the driver or use System Restore.
- DISM and SFC cannot repair Windows: use a matching repair source, Windows Recovery, or a repair reinstallation.
Do not begin by downloading a replacement DLL. The correct repair depends on whether the damaged component belongs to Windows or whether one application has an incompatible or incomplete installation.

The canonical Windows name is:
api-ms-win-core-errorhandling-l1-1-0.dll
The unhyphenated name in the error is not the official Windows filename. Microsoft documents this name as an API-set contract used for core Windows APIs, including SetErrorMode. An API-set contract is a loader-facing agreement between an application and Windows. It does not always correspond to a standalone physical DLL at a fixed path on every PC. See Microsoft’s explanation of Windows API sets.

That is why manually searching for one file in System32 or SysWOW64 can be misleading. Microsoft has included the canonical name in Windows servicing packages, but its physical location, version, and implementation can vary by Windows build. Microsoft also lists the APIs associated with this contract in its Windows API requirements and API list.
An application may still be the only visible source of the error. It could be incompatible with the installed Windows release, have incomplete dependencies, or have been damaged during an update or migration.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the affected program
This is the first fix when one game or application produces the message.

- Close the error message.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the application’s launcher, if it has one.
- Open its settings or game-management menu.
- Select Verify, Repair, Scan and repair, or a similarly named option.
- Wait for the check to finish.
- Restart the application.
For a Microsoft Store application:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Test the program.
- If it still fails, return to the same screen and select Reset, if available.
Repair normally preserves the installation. Reset may remove application data, so use it only when repair does not work.
Reinstall from the developer’s official installer
If the launcher has no repair function:
- Back up the application’s saved data if necessary.
- Uninstall the program through Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current installer from the application’s developer or publisher.
- Install the version that supports your Windows release.
- Start the program once before adding modifications, unofficial patches, or copied files.
Run the installer by right-clicking it and selecting Run as administrator if the installation fails because of permissions. Reinstalling the specific application remains the definitive fix when only that application is broken.
If the program offers both 32-bit and 64-bit builds, install the build supported by the application and your Windows version. Do not copy files between the two installations.
Fix 2: Install Windows updates, then repair system components
Use this path when several applications fail, Windows features are unstable, or the problem began after an interrupted update, storage issue, or system migration.

Install updates
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Return to Windows Update and check again until no further updates are offered.
Microsoft recommends updating and restarting before using System File Checker. If the error remains, run DISM followed by SFC.
Run DISM and SFC
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. It may remain at one percentage for several minutes.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the affected program.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies when a suitable copy is available. Microsoft documents this order in its guide to using DISM and SFC to repair Windows.
When SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test again. If it reports that it found corruption but could not repair everything, run the commands again after restarting and note the exact message.
Repeatedly running repair commands without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow. Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan showing detected problems, while repair actions are handled by its full version; it is optional, and repairing or reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when only one program fails.

If DISM says source files cannot be found
Do not replace the missing source with a random DLL. DISM may need a matching Windows installation source with the same edition, language, and architecture. Microsoft documents using /Source and /LimitAccess in its DISM and SFC repair guidance.
If SFC still cannot repair files, review:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
The log can identify which protected files were not repaired. If normal servicing cannot correct the system, continue to System Restore or a repair reinstallation rather than copying an isolated API-set file.
Fix 3: Check Visual C++ and other application dependencies
api-ms-win-core-errorhandling-l1-1-0.dll is not itself a normal Visual C++ runtime DLL. Installing Visual C++ Redistributable is therefore not a guaranteed direct fix.
It can help when the same application also reports files such as ucrtbase.dll, vcruntime140.dll, or related runtime libraries.

Match the Redistributable architecture
Microsoft provides these current package types:
vc_redist.x86.exefor 32-bit applicationsvc_redist.x64.exefor 64-bit applicationsvc_redist.arm64.exefor ARM64 applications
On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit application still needs the x86 package. Check the application’s documentation or executable architecture before choosing a package. Microsoft provides the official downloads and architecture guidance on its latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable page.
To repair an installed package:
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Search for Microsoft Visual C++.
- Select the package matching the application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Modify.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows.
Do not uninstall every Visual C++ version. Multiple generations can coexist, and removing them may break unrelated programs.
DirectX, .NET, and graphics drivers should be repaired or updated only when the application’s own error messages or documentation point to them. Reinstalling unrelated runtimes will not recreate a Windows API-set contract.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine a file used by the application, particularly after an application update.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →In Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand a detection associated with the affected application.
- Confirm the original file path and source before taking action.
Do not restore an unknown DLL merely because its name resembles a Windows component. If the file was inside the application’s installation directory, repairing or reinstalling the application is safer. Scan the system if you suspect unauthorized modification, and do not add an application folder to exclusions until its installer and files are trusted.
Fix 5: Update the application’s drivers and Windows device drivers
A driver is not the usual owner of this API-set contract, but a recent driver or system change can expose compatibility problems when an application starts.
Update through Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Install a found update and restart Windows.
For graphics, chipset, audio, or other specialized hardware, use the hardware manufacturer’s supported driver package when Device Manager finds nothing. If the issue began immediately after a driver update:

- Restart and test the program.
Hunting through hardware models and deciding which of many installed drivers is stale can be tedious. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues, while driver installation is handled by its full version; it is optional and does not replace repairing the application that actually fails.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore is appropriate when the error started after a driver, Windows update, or other system change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Select Next → Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore changes system files, drivers, and settings but does not normally remove personal documents. Microsoft describes the procedure in its System Restore documentation.
If only one application is affected, application verification or reinstallation is usually more targeted than restoring all of Windows.
Fix 7: Repair-install Windows if servicing still fails
If multiple applications remain broken after updates, DISM, SFC, and System Restore, use Windows Recovery options or reinstall the current Windows version. A repair reinstallation can restore Windows components without relying on a copied DLL.
Before proceeding:
- Back up important files.
- Confirm the Windows edition and architecture.
- Disconnect unnecessary external devices.
- Use Microsoft’s supported installation method for the current Windows version.
- Follow the option that keeps personal files and applications when available.
- Restart and run Windows Update after setup completes.
Microsoft explains this escalation path in its guide to reinstalling the current version of Windows.
Do not copy or register this DLL
Avoid these common but unsafe fixes:
- Downloading the file from a random DLL website
- Copying it from another PC
- Copying it from
System32into a game folder - Replacing a 32-bit file with a 64-bit file
- Using a file from another Windows release
- Running
regsvr32against the API-set name
regsvr32 applies to DLLs that provide registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. This API-set contract should not normally be registered, and the command may return a misleading registration error. Microsoft explains the requirement in its Regsvr32 troubleshooting documentation.
FAQ
Is apimswincoreerrorhandlingl110.dll a real Windows filename?

Is the canonical file part of Windows or the application?
The canonical name identifies a Windows API-set contract. The application is usually the program that requests it and displays the startup error. Repair the application when only that program fails, and repair Windows when several programs are affected.
Why can Windows report a missing DLL that is not always visible?
API-set names are loader contracts and may be resolved through Windows redirection rather than a standalone file at one universal location.
Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable?
Only when the application also needs Visual C++ runtime components or its documentation recommends them. Match x86 to 32-bit applications and x64 to 64-bit applications. It is not a guaranteed repair for this API-set error.
Does regsvr32 fix it?
No. This is not normally a DLL-registration problem. Do not register the API-set contract.
What if only one user account sees the error?
Test the application in another Windows account. If it works there, a damaged profile or per-user installation may be involved. Repair or reinstall the application for the affected account.

What should I do if the error says “not designed to run on Windows” or shows 0xc000012f?
That wording can indicate incompatible, damaged, or mismatched binaries. Update or reinstall the application, check its architecture, then run DISM and SFC if other programs are affected. Do not assume every instance has the same cause.
