If mshtmler.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, first determine whether Windows or one older application is calling it. It is a genuine Microsoft HTML Editing Component resource DLL associated with the Windows and Internet Explorer/MSHTML stack, not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET component, driver, or game download.

What this file actually does

mshtmler.dll is associated with Microsoft’s older HTML rendering and editing technology. File inventories describe it as the Microsoft HTML Editing Component’s Resource DLL, with historical Windows locations including:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • C:WindowsSystem32mshtmler.dll
  • C:WindowsSysWOW64mshtmler.dll on 64-bit Windows, for the 32-bit copy

The names are confusing: on 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files.

Older Internet Explorer and Outlook Express functionality could depend on this component. A modern application may also fail because it embeds or calls older Windows HTML technology, but do not assume that every game or program using the error owns a private copy.

There is no identified official standalone mshtmler.dll redistributable. Windows servicing, component repair, or repair of the affected legacy program is safer than copying a DLL from another computer.

Cause-by-symptom guide

What you see Most likely explanation Start here
The error appears while Windows starts Missing or damaged Windows component, or a startup program using legacy HTML technology Install updates, then run DISM and SFC
Only one old program fails Broken installation, private dependency, or compatibility problem Repair or reinstall that exact program
“The specified module could not be found” A dependency may be missing even if mshtmler.dll exists Check the full error and repair Windows and the application
The file disappeared after antivirus activity Quarantine or a detection involving the file Review security history and verify the file before restoring it
The issue began after cleanup software or manual deletion Protected Windows file or application file was removed Undo the cleanup if possible, then run DISM and SFC
A 32-bit application fails but other programs work Architecture-specific copy or application compatibility issue Repair the app and check System32 and SysWOW64
Several Windows components fail Broader servicing, disk, malware, or system corruption Scan the system and proceed to Windows recovery

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart

Because mshtmler.dll belongs to an older Windows HTML component, Windows Update is the safest first repair path.

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Click Check for updates.
  4. Install all available updates.
  5. Restart Windows, even if it does not immediately request a restart.
  6. Open the program that produced the error.

Internet Explorer and MSHTML files have historically been delivered through Windows servicing packages rather than as a general-purpose DLL download.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the same message returns, continue with the component repair commands below. If the error occurs only in one old application, also complete the application repair section instead of repeatedly reinstalling unrelated runtimes.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

Use these commands when the file is missing from a normal Windows directory, Windows reports that it cannot load the file, or several applications show related system-file errors.

Run DISM first

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Press Enter and wait for the operation to finish.
  2. Keep the window open, even if progress appears paused.

DISM repairs the Windows component store. It normally obtains suitable repair files through Windows Update. When it completes successfully, continue with SFC.

Run System File Checker

In the same elevated Command Prompt, enter:

sfc /scannow

Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart the PC and test the affected program.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A successful result usually says that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and repaired them. If SFC repaired files, restart before testing.

If DISM cannot find source files, Microsoft documents using a matching Windows repair source:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

Replace the example path with a repair source matching the installed Windows edition and build as closely as possible. Do not point DISM at a random downloaded DLL or an unrelated Windows installation.

Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make this process unnecessarily difficult. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the problems behind recurring repair work; its free scan shows what it identifies, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and Windows Update, DISM, and SFC remain the appropriate built-in steps.

Fix 3: Repair the application that triggers the message

If Windows starts normally and only one old program fails, the application may be loading a private file, an incompatible component, or another missing dependency.

Repair a Windows app

On Windows 11:

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Find the affected program.
  4. Select its three-dot menu.
  5. Choose Advanced options.
  6. Select Repair.
  7. Start the program again.

If Repair does not help, use Reset only if you understand that it may remove the app’s local settings or data.

Repair a classic desktop program

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select the affected application.
  5. Choose Repair, Change, or the equivalent option.
  6. Follow the installer’s instructions.
  7. Restart Windows and test the application.

If no repair option exists, uninstall the program, restart, and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer. For a game, use the launcher’s Verify files, Repair, or equivalent function first, then reinstall the game if verification cannot restore its files.

Do not assume that reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET will restore mshtmler.dll. Those packages address different dependencies unless the application separately identifies one of them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Check whether antivirus software quarantined the file

A security product may have quarantined a file because of its location, alteration, or a detection involving the application. That does not prove mshtmler.dll is malware.

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Review entries from the time the error began.
  5. Expand any entry involving mshtmler.dll or the affected program.
  6. Confirm the file path and detection details before taking action.

Restore a quarantined file only when the path is a normal Windows directory, the file is identified as Microsoft-signed, and a current scan does not indicate tampering. If the detection remains unclear, repair Windows or reinstall the affected program instead of restoring the file manually.

Run Scan options > Full scan. If the file repeatedly disappears after restoration, perform an offline or full Microsoft Defender scan and investigate possible malware, disk corruption, or cleanup software.

Fix 5: Check the correct architecture and file location

A 32-bit program and a 64-bit program may use different copies of Windows components.

On 64-bit Windows:

  • C:WindowsSystem32 is the normal location for 64-bit system files.
  • C:WindowsSysWOW64 is the normal location for 32-bit system files.

To identify the program architecture:

  1. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  2. Select Details.
  3. Right-click a column heading and choose Select columns if needed.
  4. Add the architecture column where available.
  5. Check whether the affected executable is 32-bit or 64-bit.

You can also right-click the program’s executable, select Properties, and inspect its details, although Windows does not expose architecture consistently for every application.

Do not copy one version into both folders. A DLL from another Windows release can have the wrong architecture, language, dependencies, or servicing level. If the file is absent after DISM and SFC, move to Windows recovery rather than manual replacement.

Fix 6: Do not register this DLL with regsvr32

regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide COM self-registration through DllRegisterServer. It is not a general command for repairing every missing DLL.

mshtmler.dll is a resource and support DLL, and there is no reliable evidence that it is a self-registering COM server. Running this command is therefore unlikely to restore it:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
regsvr32 mshtmler.dll

It may produce an entry-point or registration error. That result does not mean the file needs another copy. Use Windows component repair or repair the application that called it.

Fix 7: Check Windows Features only for a clearly identified legacy dependency

Do not enable or disable Windows Features at random. Changing legacy Internet Explorer-related components will not automatically restore every missing file, and it will not make unsupported Outlook Express functionality current.

If the affected program explicitly requires an optional Windows component:

  1. Open Start and type Windows Features.
  2. Select Turn Windows features on or off.
  3. Review the feature named by the application’s documentation.
  4. Change only that feature.
  5. Restart Windows when prompted.
  6. Test the application.

If the program is an old Internet Explorer or Outlook Express application, expect compatibility limits on current Windows. Repairing Windows may restore a component without restoring full support for obsolete software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 8: Update drivers only when the wider problem points to them

A graphics or storage driver does not normally supply mshtmler.dll. Driver work is relevant when the DLL error appeared alongside display crashes, disk errors, failed updates, or broader system instability.

To check drivers manually:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Storage controllers, or Disk drives.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart if Windows installs an update.

For a more targeted result, obtain the driver from the PC or device manufacturer’s official support page. Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers it identifies as outdated, while installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace DISM, SFC, or application repair.

Fix 9: Use System Restore or Windows repair

Use deeper recovery when:

  • DISM and SFC cannot repair the component.
  • The file continues to disappear.
  • Several Windows applications fail.
  • The issue began immediately after an update, cleanup, malware removal, or disk problem.
  • The affected file is absent from a current Windows installation after normal servicing repair.

First consider System Restore:

  1. Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
  2. Open the result.
  3. Select System Restore.
  4. Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
  5. Review the affected programs and drivers.
  6. Confirm the restore.

If no suitable restore point exists, use Windows recovery options or perform an in-place repair installation that preserves personal files and applications where supported. Back up important data first and follow Microsoft’s edition-specific instructions.

Frequently asked questions

Is mshtmler.dll a virus?

Not by identity alone. It is a genuine Microsoft Windows HTML component, but a malicious file can use the same filename. Verify its path, Microsoft digital signature, and security-product detection.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Should I download mshtmler.dll from a DLL website?

No. Random copies can contain malware or have the wrong architecture, language, dependencies, or servicing level. They also bypass the Windows repair system and often fail to fix the underlying problem.

Is this a Visual C++ or DirectX file?

No. mshtmler.dll is associated with Microsoft’s HTML editing technology. Install another runtime only when the application separately names that runtime as missing.

Why does the message say “specified module could not be found” when the file exists?

The named DLL may depend on another missing or damaged module. Repair Windows, repair the calling application, and use the complete error text to identify the actual failing dependency.

Does regsvr32 mshtmler.dll fix the problem?

Usually not. regsvr32 applies to self-registering COM DLLs, and mshtmler.dll is not established as one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if SFC says it repaired files but the program still fails?

Restart first, then identify the exact executable producing the error. Check whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit, repair its installation, and look for a different dependency named in the full message.

What is the safest final step?

If Windows repair does not restore the component, use System Restore, an in-place Windows repair, or Microsoft or PC-manufacturer support. Do not replace the file with an arbitrary download.
