“The program can’t start because libusb-1.0.dll is missing from your computer.”
libusb-1.0.dll belongs to the program that installed it, not to Windows itself.
The safest fix is to identify the affected USB program, repair or reinstall it from its official source, and restore the complete application folder. Do not begin by downloading a loose DLL from a random website.

Which fix applies to you
Use the first matching situation:
- The error names a USB tool, flashing utility, SDR application, camera program, Python script, or hardware-development program: repair or reinstall that application.
- The program runs from a ZIP file or portable archive: extract the entire archive to a normal folder and run the executable there.
- Windows Security recently quarantined the file: inspect Protection history and restore it only if the file belongs to a trusted application.
- The error names
VCRUNTIME,MSVCP, or another Microsoft runtime file: repair the Visual C++ Redistributable. - The program starts but cannot see the USB device: install or repair the separate USB device driver.
- The message includes
0xc000007b, an access violation, or a crash after replacing the DLL: suspect an architecture or dependency mismatch. - Several unrelated programs fail: check Windows components with DISM and SFC.
- The problem began immediately after an update or driver installation: consider rolling back that change or using System Restore.

It is also not interchangeable with:
libusb0.dlllibusbK.dllWinUSB.dlllibusb0.syslibusbK.sys
Those files belong to different libraries, drivers, or projects. A program may require both a user-space DLL and a separate USB device driver, but replacing one with another will not solve the problem.
The old libusbx.org reference found in some error guides relates to a historical fork. Use the owning application’s current installer or the current official libusb project when a direct libusb package is required.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the owning program
This is the most likely solution because the application normally supplies its private copy of libusb-1.0.dll.
Identify the affected application
- Read the complete error message and note the executable name.
- Look at the window, shortcut, or installer that launched it.
- Right-click the program’s shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, check Target to find the executable location.
- Open that folder and look for
libusb-1.0.dll.
Do not assume that the first DLL copy found on the computer belongs to this program. The correct file is usually beside the executable or inside the application’s own binary folder.
Repair an installed application
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair and test the program.
- If Repair is unavailable or does not work, choose Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings.
- Otherwise uninstall the program.
- Download the installer again from the application’s official vendor.
- Install the same architecture and release family the program requires.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If the application has its own Repair, Verify files, or Reinstall option, use that before manually copying anything.
Restore a portable application
For a portable program, do not run the executable directly inside a ZIP preview.
- Delete or move the incomplete extracted folder.
- Download the complete archive again from the vendor.
- Right-click the archive and select Extract All.
- Extract it to a normal folder such as
C:ToolsProgramName. - Confirm that all folders and DLL files were extracted.
- Run the executable from the extracted folder.
Copying only the executable often creates a missing-DLL error. Some programs need additional DLLs, configuration files, plugins, or subfolders that are supplied in the same archive.

Match the application architecture
A 32-bit program needs a 32-bit libusb-1.0.dll. A 64-bit program needs a 64-bit build. Windows 11 and Windows 10 on 64-bit hardware can run both types, but the application architecture determines which DLL it can load.
To check the application:
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Start the program, if possible.
- Select the Details tab.
- Right-click a column heading and choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform, where available.
You can also check the application’s documentation or installer. Do not mix x86, x64, ARM64, MinGW, and Microsoft Visual C++ builds without confirming that the application supports them.
A replacement DLL that produces 0xc000007b usually indicates an architecture or dependency mismatch. Remove that replacement and reinstall the application or obtain the exact build supplied by its vendor.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may remove or quarantine a legitimate application DLL, especially when the file is inside an old utility or an unusual portable package. A quarantine event does not automatically prove that the official libusb project is malicious, but an unexpected copy must be investigated.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Find the event involving
libusb-1.0.dll. - Expand it and review the detected path.
- Confirm that the path belongs to the application you intended to install.
- Check the application’s source and scan the installer.
- Restore the file only when the application and source are trusted.
- Reinstall the application if the path is temporary, random, or unfamiliar.
Do not disable antivirus globally just to make the error disappear. If protection removes the file again, contact the application’s vendor or use a newly downloaded official installer.
Fix 3: Install the required Visual C++ runtime
Sometimes Windows reports a missing libusb-1.0.dll, but the real problem is a dependency required by that DLL. If the message names VCRUNTIME, MSVCP, or another Microsoft runtime file, install the matching Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable from the official Microsoft downloads page.
- Determine whether the affected application is 32-bit, 64-bit, or ARM64.
- Download the matching Microsoft package.
- Install x86 for a 32-bit application, even on 64-bit Windows.
- Install x64 for a 64-bit application.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the application again.
The Visual C++ Redistributable does not install libusb-1.0.dll. It only supplies Microsoft runtime dependencies that some libusb builds or consuming applications may need.

Fix 4: Install the separate USB device driver
A present DLL does not guarantee USB access. The application may also require a device driver such as WinUSB, libusbK, or another driver selected by the hardware vendor.
To inspect the current driver:
- Connect the USB device.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers, Other devices, and any category matching the hardware.
- Look for a warning icon or an Unknown device entry.
- Right-click the relevant device and select Properties.
- Check Device status on the General tab.
- Open the Driver tab to review the provider and installed driver.
- Use the hardware vendor’s installer or driver instructions.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Do not replace libusb-1.0.dll with WinUSB.dll or a .sys driver. The application library and the device driver serve different purposes.
When manually checking several hardware packages and driver versions becomes confusing, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs attention; its free scan shows the findings, while the repair or driver installation is done by the full version. Reinstalling the specific USB application’s driver remains the definitive fix when that program requires a particular package.
Why copying the DLL to System32 is usually wrong
Windows searches an application’s executable directory early in the standard DLL search order. That is why the safest private copy is normally beside the program that needs it.
Avoid copying third-party files into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- A global
PATHdirectory
This can create architecture confusion, affect unrelated programs, overwrite another application’s dependency, and make future troubleshooting harder.
Manual copying is appropriate only when the application’s vendor explicitly says that it expects a private DLL beside its executable, or when a developer is deploying a known compatible libusb build.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. libusb-1.0.dll is normally a runtime library loaded by the application, not a COM component that needs registration.

Running a command such as:
regsvr32 libusb-1.0.dll
usually produces another error or changes nothing. It does not repair a missing file, install a USB driver, or resolve an incompatible architecture.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components
SFC and DISM generally cannot recreate libusb-1.0.dll because it is not normally a protected Windows system file. They are useful when several unrelated Windows programs fail or when system corruption is suspected.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
Microsoft documents these commands for repairing a Windows image and running System File Checker.
If the commands report that they repaired files but the application still reports libusb-1.0.dll, reinstall the application. Windows repair is not a substitute for restoring an application’s private DLL.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing which component changed can make diagnosis tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies findings, while repair is performed by the full version. It is not required when the owning application’s installer is the actual source of the missing DLL.

Should I download it from a DLL website?
No. Random DLL sites may provide malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible build, or a file that does not match the program’s dependencies. Use the application’s official installer or the official libusb project.
Can I copy the file from another computer?
Usually not safely. The other computer may have a different application version, architecture, compiler build, or dependent runtime. Reinstall the owning program instead.
Is libusb-1.0.dll the USB driver?
No. It is a user-space USB access library. The hardware may separately require WinUSB, libusbK, or another vendor-supplied device driver.
Why does PyUSB report “No backend available”?
PyUSB may be unable to locate a usable native USB backend. Confirm that the correct libusb library is installed where the Python environment and application can find it, then follow the PyUSB and device vendor’s installation instructions.
What if the program still crashes after reinstalling?
Confirm that the executable and DLL have matching architecture, inspect any named dependent DLL, check antivirus history, and use the application’s verify or repair feature. An access violation that names libusb-1.0.dll does not prove that the library itself is defective.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while libusb-1.0.dll belongs to an application. Repair the application first.
When should I use System Restore?
Use it only after ordinary application repair, driver rollback, and dependency checks fail, especially when the problem began directly after a known system change.
