MSI Claw 8 AI+ vs. ROG Ally X: Which Is Right for You?

The MSI Claw 8 AI+ is the better choice for maximum performance, screen size, memory, storage, and desktop-style connectivity. The 2024 ASUS ROG Ally X is the better choice for most buyers who value comfort, portability, lower cost, and more mature handheld software.

This comparison covers the MSI Claw 8 AI+ A2VM and the original 2024 ROG Ally X with AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme. It does not cover the later ROG Xbox Ally X, which is a different product with different hardware and software.

The short answer: who should buy which?

Buy the MSI Claw 8 AI+ if you want:

  • Higher performance in many tested graphics-heavy games.
  • A noticeably larger 8-inch 16:10 display.
  • 32GB of memory and a 2TB SSD out of the box.
  • Hall-effect sticks and triggers.
  • Two Thunderbolt 4 ports for docks, displays, storage, and accessories.
  • A handheld that can serve as a small desktop PC when connected to peripherals.

Buy the ROG Ally X if you want:

  • A lighter, shorter, and more compact handheld.
  • More comfortable ergonomics for extended sessions.
  • A lower purchase price when both devices are at their usual relative pricing.
  • More mature Armoury Crate controls, profiles, and tuning options.
  • A well-established AMD driver ecosystem and broad compatibility.

At similar prices, the MSI offers more hardware. When the Claw carries a substantial premium, the Ally X is the less risky value for buyers who do not specifically need the larger display, 32GB RAM, 2TB storage, or extra ports.

Performance: the MSI usually leads, but not universally

The Claw uses Intel’s Core Ultra 7 258V and Arc 140V graphics, while the Ally X uses AMD’s Ryzen Z1 Extreme with Radeon 780M-class graphics. In the cited third-party tests, the MSI generally delivered higher gaming performance in demanding titles.

Tom’s Guide measured the Claw at 30 fps versus 23 fps for the Ally X in Assassin’s Creed Mirage at 1080p, and 37.9 fps versus 30.5 fps in DiRT 5 at 720p. Its 3DMark Fire Strike Ultra result was 2,243 versus 2,090. See the full Tom’s Guide testing.

Windows Central also found the Claw substantially ahead of comparable Z1 Extreme handhelds in its tested games, but its results were not uniformly better. The Ally X led in some CPU multi-core tests, and the gaming gap changed according to the title, driver, power profile, resolution, and upscaling setting. The Windows Central review provides that broader context.

That means “the MSI is faster” is too broad. A more accurate conclusion is that the Claw was faster in the cited game and synthetic tests, while the real advantage depends on the workload.

Power modes matter

Handheld benchmarks are particularly sensitive to power limits. A meaningful comparison should match the same game build, Windows updates, graphics drivers, resolution, preset, frame cap, and upscaling mode at minimum 15W, 20W or 25W, and 30W. Plugged-in and battery results should be separated, and frame-time behavior or 1% lows should be reported alongside average fps.

CPU-limited games may narrow the MSI’s advantage. GPU-limited AAA games may favor its Arc graphics. Driver-sensitive games can change results after updates. Intel XeSS can help in supported games, but it is not a universal feature: game support varies.

Display: the Claw’s biggest everyday advantage

The Claw’s 8-inch, 1920×1200 16:10 panel gives you more physical viewing area and more vertical pixels than the Ally X’s 7-inch, 1920×1080 16:9 screen. The difference is useful beyond headline specifications:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Small text and Windows controls are easier to read.
  • PC game interfaces and strategy titles have more room.
  • Emulators and productivity applications benefit from the additional vertical space.
  • The larger panel feels more immersive in games played at a distance.

The Ally X’s 16:9 shape suits many console-style games and video content, and it is less bulky. Windows Central and Laptop Mag found the Ally X brighter in their comparisons. Windows Central measured roughly 99% sRGB for the Claw and 98% for the Ally X, while Laptop Mag measured approximately 473 nits for the Claw and 523 nits for the Ally X. Panel samples and test methods differ; see the Windows Central comparison and Laptop Mag review.

  • 【RGB Wide-Angle Hall Joysticks】The AIR X features RGB wide-angle Hall joysticks and linear Hall triggers, delivering swift rebound response and surgical control precision. Equipped with 16.7 million-color RGB lighting, the MANGMI AIR X handheld console offers three adjustable modes: Constantly Bright, Breath, Rainbow, with customizable brightness and hue settings.

Both displays support 120Hz and variable refresh rate. Do not assume the Claw should render demanding games at its native 1920×1200 resolution. Many modern AAA games will feel better at 800p, 900p, or 1080p with upscaling and sensible quality settings.

The MSI’s glossy glass can also produce more reflections. That matters on trains, planes, and bright rooms where the larger screen’s benefit can be offset by glare.

Battery life: neither is an automatic winner

Both handhelds have 80Wh batteries, but capacity does not determine runtime by itself. Brightness, refresh rate, Wi-Fi, frame caps, Windows background activity, game engine, resolution, and power mode all change consumption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Windows Central reported about 2 hours 10 minutes for both during demanding gaming at roughly 200 nits.
  • Tom’s Guide recorded 2:22 for the Claw and 3:04 for the Ally X in its continuous web-surfing test.
  • Laptop Mag recorded 3:06 for the Claw in its default AI Engine mode and 3:04 for the Ally X in its comparison table.
  • Laptop Mag recorded 4:21 for the Claw in Endurance mode, but with reduced performance.

These results are not contradictory so much as differently controlled. The responsible conclusion is that demanding gaming is generally a short-session activity on either device—often around two hours at higher performance—and lower-power modes can extend play substantially. Indie and older games may last much longer.

For travel, budget for a 65W USB-C PD charger or a power bank that can actually sustain the handheld’s required USB-C PD wattage. A large mAh number alone does not guarantee suitable output, and many travel power banks cannot maintain maximum-performance gaming.

Comfort, controls, and portability

The ROG Ally X is the better fit for commuters and players who hold the device for long sessions. Its body is shorter, thinner, and lighter, and reviewers generally preferred its grip ergonomics. Its Xbox-style layout and D-pad also feel familiar.

The Claw’s larger chassis provides room for its bigger screen, but it adds bulk. Its Hall-effect sticks and triggers are an important advantage for buyers concerned about the traditional potentiometer wear mechanism. They are designed to reduce that specific type of wear, not to guarantee perfect quality control, identical stick tension, or immunity from every input problem.

Windows Central preferred the Ally X’s grip comfort but gave the MSI credit for its Hall-effect controls and ports. Fan noise and thermals vary with firmware, profile, ambient temperature, and whether the device is plugged in, so neither should be treated as universally quieter or cooler without a matched test.

Software and game compatibility

Both systems run Windows 11 and can access Steam, Epic Games Store, Xbox PC Game Pass, Battle.net, Ubisoft Connect, EA App, and other PC storefronts. That flexibility is their strength—and their main usability drawback.

Neither device plays every PC game without qualification. You may encounter small desktop-oriented text, launchers that require mouse input, anti-cheat restrictions, sleep or resume problems, driver bugs, or games that need manual resolution, scaling, or memory adjustments.

The Ally X’s Armoury Crate software is the more mature handheld control environment in the cited comparisons. It provides convenient operating modes, per-game profiles, display settings, and manual VRAM allocation. The Claw relies on MSI Center M and Intel graphics software, which can require more troubleshooting depending on the game. The Ally X’s software advantage does not make it more powerful, but it can make daily tuning less frustrating.

AMD’s Z1 Extreme also has a broad, established driver history. Intel Arc performance has been strong in many tests, but game-by-game driver behavior is particularly important when buying the Claw.

RAM, storage, and desktop use

The Claw’s 32GB of memory and 2TB SSD are more than specification luxuries for certain buyers. They help if you install multiple large AAA games, use Game Pass and several launchers, emulate newer systems, keep mods and shader caches locally, or use the handheld for multitasking.

The Ally X’s 24GB RAM and 1TB SSD remain adequate for many players. Its SSD can be replaced, but system memory is not a normal user-upgrade path. Storage expansion is therefore a separate question from RAM: an Ally X with a reasonably priced aftermarket SSD may be better value than paying MSI’s full premium solely for capacity.

The Claw is also the more convincing desktop-replacement candidate. Its larger screen, extra memory, 2TB storage, and strong productivity results make it useful as a compact Windows computer. Tom’s Guide measured it ahead in several file-copy and HandBrake tests, although Windows Central found the Ally X ahead in some multi-core CPU benchmarks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Neither is a laptop replacement for everyone. Sustained desktop work generally calls for a dock, monitor, keyboard, mouse, and reliable charger. Once those are attached, the setup loses much of the handheld’s convenience.

Ports, docks, displays, and eGPUs

Two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports make the Claw especially attractive for a desk setup. You can connect a dock and charge without constantly swapping one cable, use fast external storage, attach multiple displays, and access Thunderbolt accessories. MSI lists the two Thunderbolt 4 ports in its official specifications.

The Ally X supports USB4-class connectivity and external displays, but its port arrangement and accessory compatibility differ. Interface support should not be confused with a guarantee of eGPU performance or compatibility with every enclosure and graphics card. Confirm the specific dock, display resolution, charging wattage, and accessory requirements.

Price and total setup cost

The frequently cited comparison used $899.99 for the Claw and $799.99 for the Ally X, but those are dated observed or launch comparison prices rather than a verified August 2026 retail snapshot. Sale and clearance pricing can change the decision completely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The MSI premium is easiest to justify when it is small enough that you genuinely value its larger display, 32GB RAM, 2TB SSD, Hall-effect controls, dual Thunderbolt 4 ports, and higher results in your favorite demanding games. If the price gap is large, the Ally X’s comfort and software maturity become more valuable.

Compare the complete setup, not only the handheld:

  • Case—Claw cases are not automatically compatible with the smaller Ally X.
  • 65W or higher USB-C charger.
  • USB-C dock if you use an external display or peripherals.
  • Power bank with sufficient USB-C PD output.
  • microSD card for secondary storage.
  • Optional keyboard, mouse, screen protector, and portable monitor.

A microSD card is useful for less demanding games and media, but it is not equivalent to the internal SSD for modern AAA loading performance.

Decision matrix

Priority Better choice Why
Maximum AAA performance MSI Claw 8 AI+ Higher results in many cited gaming tests
Larger screen and PC usability MSI Claw 8 AI+ 8-inch 16:10, 1920×1200 display
More RAM and storage MSI Claw 8 AI+ 32GB and 2TB included
Smaller, lighter body ROG Ally X More compact and comfortable for many users
Easier tuning ROG Ally X More mature Armoury Crate environment
Lower purchase price Usually ROG Ally X Verify the live price and exact model
Dock and desktop use MSI Claw 8 AI+ Two Thunderbolt 4 ports and more memory
Equal price Depends MSI for hardware; ASUS for comfort and software

When neither is the right buy

Choose neither if you want console-like simplicity, all-day demanding-game battery life, an OLED display, or SteamOS-style suspend and resume. A Steam Deck OLED may better suit a Steam-focused library and console-like interface, while a Lenovo Legion Go or Legion Go S offers a different screen and control philosophy. A newer ROG Xbox Ally X is a separate product to investigate—not a substitute for the original Ally X in this comparison. If you mostly play at home, a gaming laptop, mini PC, or desktop may deliver more performance per dollar.

For used devices, verify battery health, charger inclusion, SSD capacity, dead pixels, stick behavior, and warranty transferability. For any purchase, confirm the seller, region, return window, and RMA terms.

Final recommendation

The MSI Claw 8 AI+ is the more ambitious machine and the stronger choice for demanding AAA gaming, a large readable screen, substantial local storage, heavy multitasking, Hall-effect controls, and docked desktop use.

The 2024 ROG Ally X remains the safer all-round recommendation for buyers who want a lighter handheld, better comfort, more mature tuning software, and a lower price. Do not let the MSI’s stronger specification sheet settle the question by itself: the right choice depends on whether you will use those advantages often enough to justify the extra cost and bulk.
