MSI’s MPG 491CQPX QD-OLED keeps the 49-inch, 32:9, 5120×1440 Dual-QHD format of the company’s MPG 491CQP, but raises the refresh rate from 144Hz to 240Hz. It launched on November 12, 2024, and remains listed by MSI in the U.S. as of August 2026.
That makes it a serious upgrade for high-end PC gamers, sim-racing enthusiasts and multitaskers—but not automatically a better buy for everyone. The key question is whether your games and graphics card can produce enough frames at roughly 7.37 million pixels to make use of 240Hz.

What changed from the MPG 491CQP?
The defining change is the refresh rate. The earlier MPG 491CQP runs at 144Hz, while the MPG 491CQPX reaches 240Hz. That is an increase of 96Hz, or approximately 66.7%.
#1 Best Overall
- Next-Gen QD-OLED Panel – With stunning image quality and fast response time
- Fastest 0.03ms GtG response time and 240Hz refresh rate
- Incredible HDR visual – VESA DisplayHDR True Black 400
- QD Premium Color – Ensures the color meets the market standard
- MSI OLED Care 2.0 – Reduced the risk of OLED image sticking / burn-in
The frame interval also falls from about 6.94 milliseconds at 144Hz to 4.17 milliseconds at 240Hz. In a game producing well over 144 frames per second, this can make camera movement look smoother and may reduce the time between rendered frames. It is most relevant to competitive shooters, racing games and other fast-motion titles.
It is not a universal image-quality improvement. If your GPU produces 90fps in demanding games, or you mostly play slower single-player titles capped below 144fps, the 240Hz upgrade will have limited practical value. The display’s claimed 0.03ms GtG response time is an MSI panel specification, not an independently measured end-to-end input-lag result.
Launch coverage from HotHardware identified the 491CQPX as the faster successor to the 491CQP. MSI also describes the newer QD-OLED subpixel arrangement as improving text sharpness, but that claim should not be interpreted as proof that all desktop text-fringing concerns have disappeared.
Why 5120×1440 is called Dual-QHD
Dual-QHD, or DQHD, is effectively two 2560×1440 displays placed side by side. The MPG 491CQPX provides that panoramic workspace on one seamless panel, without a physical bezel dividing the middle.
For games, the 32:9 format can provide a much wider view in titles with proper ultrawide support. It is particularly compelling for:
Rank #2
- The latest 5th-Gen QD-OLED Panel – A new RGB Stripe sub-pixel layout for sharper visuals
- DarkArmor Film- Delivers 40% deeper blacks and a 2.5x more scratch-resistant screen surface
- Incredible HDR visual – VESA DisplayHDR True Black 500, Crystal-Clear Motion – VESA ClearMR 15000 certified
- Peak 1300 Nits-delivers a superior HDR experience with 1300 nits peak brightness, Ensures the color meets the market standard – Delta E≤2
- 5-layer tandem OLED panel with EL Gen 3 technology – Light efficiency up to 30%
- Sim racing, where the extra horizontal view can show more of the track and cockpit.
- Flight simulators, where a wider horizon and instrument layout are useful.
- Strategy and management games with broad maps or interfaces.
- Supported first-person games that render 32:9 correctly.
For work, the width allows two large application windows, a browser beside an editor, or a timeline beside a preview. However, it is still one physical display rather than two independently managed monitors. Some applications are less flexible when maximized, and window-management software or the operating system’s snapping tools may be needed.
Game support is another qualification. A title may support native 32:9, stretch a 16:9 image, crop the sides, limit the field of view, place HUD elements awkwardly near the edges, or use 16:9 presentation during cutscenes. Before buying, check each important game for:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Native 32:9 support.
- Field-of-view behavior and competitive-game restrictions.
- HUD and menu placement.
- Whether cutscenes and pre-rendered sequences remain 16:9.
Can your GPU really drive 240Hz?
The MPG 491CQPX has roughly twice as many pixels as a conventional 2560×1440 display: about 7.37 million versus 3.69 million. It has slightly fewer pixels than 4K, at approximately 8.29 million, but asks the GPU to render them across an unusually wide 32:9 image.
There is no single mandatory GPU. Performance depends on the game engine, graphics settings, ray tracing, upscaling, frame generation and the frame rate you want. A demanding game at native resolution with high settings can be far more difficult to run at 240fps than a competitive title using reduced settings.
A sensible buying test is to examine benchmarks for your actual games at resolutions close to 5120×1440. Consider the monitor a 240Hz-capable display, not a promise that every game will run at 240fps. A high-end graphics card is useful if maximum refresh rate is a priority, while less powerful systems can still benefit from the panel’s OLED contrast and ultrawide workspace at lower frame rates.

QD-OLED image quality and desktop trade-offs
QD-OLED combines individually controlled OLED pixels with quantum-dot color conversion. Pixels can switch off for very deep blacks, while the quantum-dot layer helps provide a wide color gamut and strong color volume. The result should be especially attractive in dark games and HDR content, where OLED’s contrast is more important than raw full-screen brightness.
MSI advertises DisplayHDR True Black 400 and a 1,000-nit peak HDR figure. The 1,000-nit number is measured under a specific 3% average picture-level condition, meaning it describes a small bright highlight rather than sustained full-screen brightness. It should not be read as saying the monitor is a 1,000-nit full-screen display.
The screen also has an anti-reflection coating, a 178-degree horizontal and vertical viewing angle, and MSI-advertised VESA ClearMR 13000 certification. The available launch and specification sources do not establish independent measurements for sustained HDR brightness, color accuracy, uniformity, actual input lag or long-term performance.
Text rendering deserves a check before purchase. QD-OLED subpixel layouts can look different from a conventional RGB-stripe LCD, and some users may notice color fringing around fine text. The visibility varies with scaling, font rendering, viewing distance and individual sensitivity. MSI says the newer arrangement improves text sharpness, but independent hands-on testing would be needed to quantify that improvement.
OLED care and burn-in coverage
MSI includes OLED Care 2.0, a collection of panel-maintenance and image-retention mitigation features. The company also advertises a three-year OLED warranty that includes burn-in protection, subject to the terms, exclusions and procedures applicable in the buyer’s region. Check the relevant MSI support and warranty documentation before relying on that coverage.

Mitigation is not immunity. Static taskbars, desktop icons, news tickers, application toolbars and game HUDs can create more concern than varied full-screen content. Users should allow the monitor’s panel-care routines to run and should not disable protective functions simply to avoid reminders. MSI’s current product information also describes a 24-hour panel-refresh interval intended to reduce interruptions.
Ports and features
The connectivity is stronger than the basic 49-inch format alone suggests. MSI lists:
- Two HDMI 2.1 inputs with up to 48Gbps bandwidth.
- One DisplayPort 1.4a input.
- One USB-C input with DisplayPort Alt Mode and up to 98W power delivery.
- Two USB 2.0 Type-A ports and one USB 2.0 Type-B upstream port.
- A headphone output.
- KVM, picture-in-picture and picture-by-picture modes.
USB-C can carry video, USB connectivity and laptop charging through one cable. However, 98W may not fully replace a performance laptop’s own charger under heavy load, and the laptop’s USB-C implementation still determines what display mode is available. Generic docks and adapters may also prevent 5120×1440 at 240Hz.
MSI lists G-SYNC Compatible support and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro on its global product page. HDMI 2.1 adds VRR, ALLM and CEC features, while the monitor supports console modes including 120Hz operation with HDR according to MSI.
What about PS5 and Xbox?
The HDMI 2.1 inputs make the monitor compatible with current consoles’ supported high-refresh signals, including 120Hz and VRR modes where the console and game provide them. That does not mean a PS5 or Xbox renders games at the monitor’s native 5120×1440 resolution.

Console output is generally designed around 16:9 resolutions and may appear with unused space or scaling on a 32:9 display. The MPG 491CQPX is therefore a PC-first monitor. Console support is a useful secondary feature, not a reason to choose this model over a conventional 16:9 television or monitor.
Who should buy the MPG 491CQPX?
- High-end PC gamers: Especially players whose games can sustain high frame rates at 5120×1440.
- Sim-racing and flight-simulation players: The panoramic format is a central part of the experience.
- Productivity-and-gaming users: The seamless width can replace two 1440p monitors for many workflows.
- Laptop-plus-desktop owners: USB-C power delivery and KVM simplify switching between systems.
- OLED enthusiasts: The deep blacks and wide-gamut QD-OLED presentation are strong reasons to prefer it over an LCD.
Who should hesitate?
- Buyers with small desks: A 49-inch 32:9 monitor is physically wide and needs suitable depth and viewing distance.
- Users with midrange GPUs: You may spend on 240Hz capability that your games cannot use.
- Console-only players: The native Dual-QHD ultrawide format is primarily a PC advantage.
- Static-office users: OLED-care routines and burn-in considerations matter more when the same desktop elements remain visible all day.
- Users needing independent dual-monitor control: One seamless panel is not identical to two separately positioned screens.
- HDR brightness seekers: The peak 1,000-nit claim is a small-window figure, not sustained full-screen brightness.
What to do if 240Hz does not appear
- Connect the monitor directly to the graphics card rather than through a low-bandwidth dock.
- Use the supplied cable or another cable rated for the required signal.
- Select 5120×1440 and 240Hz in the operating system’s display settings.
- Check the GPU driver’s resolution, color-output and refresh-rate settings.
- Try another cable or input.
- Check MSI’s support page for firmware and follow the exact update procedure for the relevant release.
MSI states that firmware updates can be performed through USB and DisplayPort connections, but the supported procedure may vary by firmware version.
Price and availability
MSI continues to list the MPG 491CQPX QD-OLED on its U.S. site and official store, but current stock and pricing should be verified at the time of purchase. Historical launch pricing for the predecessor is not a reliable guide to the 491CQPX’s current price, and this monitor should not be called a bargain without a live comparison.

The MSI MPG 491CQPX QD-OLED is a specialist enthusiast display rather than a universally better monitor. Its compelling combination is the seamless 49-inch 32:9 workspace, QD-OLED contrast and 240Hz refresh rate. For a high-end PC with games that support ultrawide rendering, the upgrade over the 144Hz MPG 491CQP is meaningful.
For everyone else, the decision is less obvious. If your system rarely exceeds 144fps at 5120×1440, if you mainly use static desktop applications, or if you play primarily on consoles, the extra refresh rate and OLED trade-offs may not justify the size and price. The 491CQPX makes the most sense when its panoramic format is already a priority and your hardware can exploit the faster panel.
