msimsg.dll errors usually appear when Windows or an installer cannot load the Windows Installer message component. The message may say:
- “The program can’t start because msimsg.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “This application failed to start because msimsg.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading msimsg.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “msimsg.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The 60-second answer
msimsg.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component named Windows® Installer International Messages. It belongs to Windows Installer – Unicode, and Windows Installer uses it for message and resource strings, including localized installation messages. It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET component, or device-driver DLL. Microsoft documents its use in Windows Installer localization and installer validation.Microsoft’s MUI example

Do not download a replacement copy from a random DLL website, copy one into System32, or start with regsvr32. The safest first repair is:
- Install pending Windows updates and restart.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
- Restart and test the installation or application again.
If only one application triggers the error, repair or reinstall that application from its original vendor or launcher. If every MSI installation fails, concentrate on Windows servicing and Windows Installer rather than the application that happens to display the message.

What msimsg.dll does
The name refers to Microsoft Installer messages. The file contains message resources used by Windows Installer rather than application logic that a normal program calls directly. Microsoft identifies the component as Windows® Installer International Messages and associates it with the product Windows Installer – Unicode.Microsoft’s ICE40 documentation
Windows Installer is the Windows technology used by many .msi packages for installation, repair, update, and removal operations. As a result, the program shown in the error may not be the true owner of the file. An application’s installer may fail because Windows cannot access its own Installer component.
Windows Installer 5.0 is included in Windows 7 and later. Microsoft does not provide a separate Windows Installer 5.0 redistributable for modern Windows. Older systems, including some Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, and Windows Server 2008 installations, may require the matching Windows Installer 3.1 or 4.5 package instead.Microsoft Windows Installer redistributables

On a 64-bit Windows installation, matching copies may exist in locations such as:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Despite the directory names, System32 normally contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files used by 32-bit applications. On 32-bit Windows, the relevant system directory is generally C:WindowsSystem32.
The correct path depends on the Windows architecture and the application making the request. Do not choose a file based only on its name or on the largest version number shown by a download site. Microsoft security documentation lists architecture-specific Msimsg.dll files, while file metadata varies between Windows releases.Microsoft MS15-074 file information
Older inventories list 32-bit builds such as 3.1.4001.5512 and 3.0.3790.2180. Those details do not establish what belongs on every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation. File version, size, language, and architecture must be evaluated against the particular Windows release.
What may have caused the error
The timing helps identify the repair path.
The error appears during Windows startup
A startup entry, scheduled task, or application may be trying to start after a partial uninstall or failed update. Windows system-file corruption is also possible.
First complete Windows Update, then run DISM and SFC. If the message names one application, repair or remove that application after Windows servicing completes.
The error appears during an .msi installation
This points more strongly toward Windows Installer, a damaged installer package, blocked files, or a missing Windows component. Test another trusted MSI package. If several unrelated MSI packages fail, repair Windows rather than replacing a DLL.
The error appears during uninstall or repair
The application may have lost its cached installer files, or the Windows Installer cache may be damaged. Do not delete C:WindowsInstaller; cached files there can be required for later repair, update, and uninstall operations.Microsoft’s Windows Installer cache guidance

The error appears when launching one program
The program may have an incomplete installation or a damaged installer transaction. Repair it from Windows settings or Control Panel. If repair is unavailable, reinstall it using the original vendor installer or its official launcher.
The problem began after security software activity
Check whether Microsoft Defender or another security product quarantined the file. A quarantine event does not prove the file was malicious or that it was a false positive. Verify the path, Microsoft digital signature, and security-product detection before restoring anything.
The problem began after cleanup or disk trouble
Aggressive cleanup, malware, failing storage, or an interrupted update can damage protected Windows files. Run a full security scan, back up important data, and check whether corruption returns after repair.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Windows updates can restore servicing components and correct files without manual copying.

After restarting, retry the same installation or application. If the error returns, continue with DISM and SFC rather than downloading msimsg.dll.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the main repair for a missing or corrupted Windows component. DISM repairs the Windows component store, which SFC can then use to replace damaged protected files.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window because progress may pause for a while.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application or MSI installation again.

Microsoft describes these repair paths in its application repair guidance.Repair apps and programs in Windows
If repair is not available or does not work, uninstall the application and restart Windows. Reinstall it using the original vendor installer, Microsoft Store, or the application’s official launcher. For a game, use the launcher’s built-in verify or repair-files feature when available.
Do not assume the application owns msimsg.dll. The application may simply be the first program to expose a Windows Installer failure.
Fix 4: Check Defender quarantine and file authenticity
If a security product removed or blocked the file, replacing it manually is not the right first move.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections related to
msimsg.dll. - Record the detection name, original path, and action taken.
- Do not select Restore or Allow on device until the file has been verified.
A legitimate system copy should be in the expected Windows system directory and should have a valid Microsoft digital signature. A copy found beside an unrelated executable, in a temporary download folder, or in an unusual application directory deserves additional investigation.
After confirming the path and signature, review the detection with your security administrator or security-product documentation. Run a full scan if the file appeared outside the Windows directories. If corruption or quarantine returns, investigate malware, a damaged disk, or a security-product conflict instead of repeatedly restoring the same file.Microsoft Protection History
Fix 5: Check Windows architecture and the file path
A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows may use the 32-bit Windows components in SysWOW64, while a 64-bit application uses the 64-bit system components in System32.
To identify the operating-system architecture:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Look at System type.
On Windows 10, open Settings > System > About and review System type there as well.

The presence of a file does not prove that it is the correct file. A loader error can also mean a dependency, path, architecture, or corrupted image problem. Windows DLL search behavior can make an untrusted copy beside an executable load before the intended system component, creating additional risk.Microsoft DLL search order
Fix 6: Do not register msimsg.dll
regsvr32 is not a universal DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that expose a self-registration entry point, commonly COM or ActiveX components.
msimsg.dll is a Windows Installer message-resource DLL, not a normal COM server. Running a command such as this is generally inappropriate:
regsvr32 msimsg.dll
A failure from regsvr32 does not show that the correct repair is to find another copy. It usually means the DLL is not designed for that registration mechanism. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, application repair, or system recovery instead.Microsoft regsvr32 documentation
Fix 7: Consider legacy Windows Installer packages only on legacy Windows
Do not install an old Windows Installer redistributable on Windows 10 or Windows 11 simply because a website lists it beside msimsg.dll.
Microsoft lists Windows Installer 3.1 and 4.5 packages for older operating systems. These packages are architecture-specific and apply only to the Windows releases named in Microsoft’s documentation. Use the package matching the exact operating system and architecture, and obtain it from Microsoft.Windows Installer redistributables
For modern Windows, Windows Installer 5.0 is part of the operating system and has no separate redistributable. Windows Update and component repair are the correct starting points.
Fix 8: Use System Restore when the timing is clear
System Restore is useful when the error began after a driver, application, update, or system change and a restore point exists from before the failure.
Recommended Free Tools
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.

- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace personal files, but it can remove applications, drivers, or updates installed after the selected restore point. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore guidance.Microsoft System Restore

If the option is unavailable, use Microsoft’s supported Windows recovery or installation process for the installed edition and architecture. Back up important files before major recovery work.
Drivers, Windows Features, and unrelated runtimes
Drivers are not a primary cause of msimsg.dll errors. Do not begin with Device Manager unless the complete error also identifies a hardware or driver problem.
If a separate device problem appeared at the same time:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
For a confirmed driver rollback or reinstall, right-click the device, select Properties, open the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver or Uninstall Device only when appropriate. Obtain replacement drivers from the hardware manufacturer or Windows Update.
Finding the correct driver manually can mean checking hardware identifiers, Windows editions, and architecture across many vendor pages. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers, while its full version performs driver installation; it is optional and is not a substitute for repairing Windows Installer.
Windows Features are also not a normal fix for this file. Do not enable or disable random features to restore msimsg.dll. Use Settings > Optional features or Control Panel > Programs > Turn Windows features on or off only when the complete error identifies a missing Windows feature.
Reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is usually irrelevant unless the failing application separately reports one of those dependencies. Those packages do not replace the Windows Installer message component.
Why DLL download sites and manual copying are unsafe
A standalone download may have:
- The wrong Windows build
- The wrong language
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- An invalid or missing Microsoft signature
- Malware or a modified payload
- No related component-store or installer repair
- A path that creates DLL search-order problems
Copying a file into System32 or SysWOW64 can also make Windows servicing inconsistent. It may hide the original cause while leaving related files, permissions, and component metadata damaged.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, the original application installer, System Restore, or a Microsoft repair installation. These methods restore the component in context rather than dropping an unrelated DLL into a system directory.
Recommended Free Tools
If SFC and DISM do not fix the error
Work through these checks in order:
- Test whether another trusted MSI package fails.
- Repair or reinstall the one affected application.
- Check Defender Protection History and other security logs.
- Confirm that
msimsg.dllis in the expected Windows directory and has a valid Microsoft signature. - Check Event Viewer for errors at the same time as the failure.
- Review the application’s MSI or setup log if one exists.
- Test the installation from a fresh local user account.
- Back up data and check drive health if corruption returns.
- Use System Restore when a matching restore point exists.
- Use a Windows 11 repair reinstall or the appropriate recovery process.
If the error says “The specified module could not be found” while the file exists, investigate the calling program, its dependencies, and its path. That wording does not always mean msimsg.dll itself is absent.
Frequently asked questions
Is msimsg.dll a genuine Microsoft file?
Yes. It is the Windows® Installer International Messages component associated with Windows Installer – Unicode and published by Microsoft Corporation.
Should I download msimsg.dll separately?
No. Restore it through Windows servicing or the correct Microsoft Windows Installer package for a supported legacy operating system. Avoid arbitrary DLL download sites.
Should I run regsvr32 msimsg.dll?
Generally no. This is a message-resource DLL, not a typical self-registering COM or ActiveX component. Use DISM, SFC, Windows Update, or application repair.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIs this a Visual C++ or DirectX problem?
Usually not. Those runtimes do not provide Windows Installer’s message resources. Investigate them only if the complete error separately identifies one of those dependencies.
Why are there System32 and SysWOW64 copies?
64-bit Windows supports both 64-bit and 32-bit applications. The two application types can use different system directories and architecture-specific binaries.
What if the file exists but Windows still reports an error?
Check its location, Microsoft signature, architecture, and the application or installer log. The message may indicate a dependency, path, architecture mismatch, or corrupted image rather than a missing file.
Can I delete the Windows Installer cache?
No. Do not delete C:WindowsInstaller. Its cached files may be needed for future repair, update, and uninstall operations.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What is the best fix when only one program fails?
Repair the program, verify its installer files, then reinstall it from the original vendor or launcher. If other MSI installations work, the application’s installation is more likely than a missing global Windows component.
What is the best fix when every MSI installation fails?
Install Windows updates, restart, then run DISM followed by SFC from an elevated Command Prompt. If servicing corruption continues, use System Restore or a Windows repair reinstall.
