livesnth.dll Load Error: Rebuild the Legacy LiveSynth App

By VGSources Team 12 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The livesnth.dll error may say “This application failed to start because livesnth.dll was not found,” “The file livesnth.dll is missing or corrupted,” or “Error loading livesnth.dll.” livesnth.dll is associated with the old LiveSynth application, not with Windows itself.

The 60-second answer

livesnth.dll is a legacy 32-bit third-party DLL connected with LiveUpdate’s LiveSynth and LiveSynth Pro SoundFont synthesizer software. It was used as part of an old audio application and DXi instrument.

The safest fix is to identify the program requesting the file, then repair or reinstall that complete program from its original installer, installation disc, archived installer, or trusted backup. Do not download an isolated copy of livesnth.dll and place it in System32 or SysWOW64.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the old audio program is no longer needed, uninstalling the parent application is safer than trying to keep a damaged legacy component running.

What is livesnth.dll?

Available public file metadata describes livesnth.dll as follows:

  • Internal description: Lupdate
  • Product: LiveSynth
  • Reported developer: LiveUpdate
  • Architecture: recurring metadata identifies it as Win32 or PE32, meaning 32-bit
  • Reported version: 4.0.0.101
  • Reported size: 278,528 bytes

These details come from third-party file metadata rather than a current official vendor download or authenticated Microsoft catalog. One public listing conflicts with the recurring 32-bit identification by labeling the file x64, so treat the architecture information as useful guidance rather than proof of a particular binary’s identity.

LiveSynth Pro was a legacy SoundFont playback module released as a DXi instrument. It could be installed with older music-production software, including some Cakewalk or SONAR-related setups, but the exact parent program depends on the computer and installer involved.

Is livesnth.dll a Windows file?

No evidence identifies livesnth.dll as a Windows component, Microsoft runtime file, Visual C++ file, DirectX file, or standard device-driver component.

A clean Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation should not normally contain it. Windows repair tools cannot provide this DLL because it belongs to an old third-party application.

The file is also not automatically malware simply because it has appeared in historical malware-removal logs. Those logs show that the filename existed on affected computers, but they do not prove that every copy of the file is malicious. Judge the specific file by its location, origin, signature, and relationship to installed software.

First, identify the program requesting the DLL

The name in the error dialog is more important than the DLL filename. A complete repair depends on knowing which executable is trying to load livesnth.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the error dialog

Look at the title bar and surrounding text. It may identify:

  • A music-production application
  • A DXi or plugin host
  • A Cakewalk or SONAR component
  • An installer or uninstaller
  • An old utility that was removed incompletely

Write down the application name before closing the message.

Check the shortcut target

  1. Right-click the shortcut that produces the error.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Shortcut tab.
  4. Read the Target field and Start in folder.
  5. Note the executable name and installation directory.

If the shortcut points to a program that has already been removed, the error may be caused by a leftover startup entry or plugin registration rather than an actively used application.

Check Task Manager

If the error appears during startup:

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Look for an old audio, synthesizer, recording, or plugin-related entry.
  4. Right-click a suspicious entry and choose Open file location, if available.
  5. Record the executable path.

Do not delete startup entries yet. First determine whether the associated application is still installed or still needed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check Event Viewer when the message is vague

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type eventvwr.msc.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Open Windows Logs > Application.
  5. Look for an Error recorded at the time the message appeared.
  6. Check the Faulting application name and Faulting module name.

Event Viewer may identify the caller even when the popup only says that livesnth.dll could not be found.

Causes of the error

Likely cause What it means Best response
Parent app was partly removed The program still expects its DLL Repair or reinstall the complete program
Antivirus quarantine Security software removed or isolated the file Verify the application and inspect Protection history
Damaged installation The DLL or one of its dependencies is corrupt Reinstall from the same application release

Windows corruption Protected system files are damaged Run DISM and SFC as a secondary check
Recent system change An uninstall, update, restore, or cleanup removed required components Use System Restore if appropriate

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the parent application

This is the most likely solution.

Try Windows’ built-in repair option

For a modern packaged application:

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Find the program named in the error.
  4. Select the three-dot menu.
  5. Choose Advanced options.
  6. Select Repair.
  7. Start the program again.

If Repair is unavailable or does not help, return to the same screen and choose Reset only if you understand that it may remove the application’s settings or data.

For classic desktop software:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Find LiveSynth, LiveSynth Pro, the audio host, or the package that installed it.
  5. Right-click the entry.
  6. Choose Repair or Change, if offered.
  7. Follow the installer prompts.
  8. Restart Windows and test the application.

A successful repair usually removes the missing-file message and allows the original host or plugin to start. If the same error remains, use the original installer to reinstall the complete package rather than copying the DLL separately.

Reinstall from a trustworthy source

Use, in this order:

  1. The application’s original official installer
  2. Original installation media
  3. A backup made from the same computer or application release
  4. An installer supplied by the organization that legitimately licensed or distributed the software

No current official LiveUpdate or LiveSynth download and support page has been established for this old product. Avoid installers advertised as a standalone livesnth.dll fix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before reinstalling, save project files, presets, license information, and custom SoundFont locations. Then:

  1. Uninstall the damaged parent application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, or from Control Panel > Programs and Features.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Run the complete installer.
  4. Install the 32-bit application and its plugins together.
  5. Start the host and check whether the synthesizer is listed.
  6. Open a known project or test SoundFont.

If the installer fails, run it from a local folder, right-click it, select Properties, and use Unblock if that option appears on the General tab. You can also right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.

Fix 2: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine

Security software may have removed the DLL. Do not restore it immediately.

  1. Open Start and search for Windows Security.
  2. Open Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review detections from the time the problem began.
  5. Expand any entry mentioning livesnth.dll or the parent application.
  6. Check the detected file path, detection name, and action taken.

Restore the file only when all of these are true:

  • The path belongs to the legitimate parent application.
  • You still trust and need that application.
  • The installer or backup came from a legitimate source.
  • You have scanned the complete installer and the restored file.

If the file was found in a temporary folder, an unfamiliar download directory, or a random system folder, do not restore it. Remove the obsolete application or obtain a clean copy from its legitimate installer instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After reinstalling, run a full security scan. If Defender immediately quarantines the restored file again, stop forcing the restoration and replace or remove the old software.

Fix 3: Check whether the old 32-bit program is compatible

The recurring file metadata identifies livesnth.dll as 32-bit. A 32-bit application can normally run on 64-bit Windows, but an old DXi plugin may still fail because of obsolete installers, licensing services, permissions, host incompatibility, or missing dependencies.

Try compatibility settings on the program that requests the DLL:

  1. Right-click the program’s executable or shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Compatibility tab.
  4. Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
  5. Start with an older Windows version that matches the application’s documentation, if known.
  6. Select Run this program as an administrator only if the application requires it.
  7. Select Apply, then OK.
  8. Launch the host again.

Do not copy the same DLL into both C:WindowsSystem32 and C:WindowsSysWOW64. Those folders are used according to application architecture, and indiscriminate copying can create version conflicts without repairing the actual installation.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the program starts only under compatibility settings, treat that as a temporary recovery measure. Save your projects and plan to migrate to a maintained SoundFont or sampler product.

Fix 4: Restore the exact file from a backup

If you have a known-good backup of the entire application, restore the application rather than only the DLL.

  1. Identify the original installation folder from the shortcut or Event Viewer.
  2. Compare it with the backup.
  3. Restore the complete program directory and its installer-created files.
  4. If the backup includes an installer, use the installer instead of manually copying files.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Test the application from its normal shortcut.

A file from another LiveSynth release may not match the host or its dependencies. Similar filenames are not sufficient evidence that two DLLs are interchangeable.

Fix 5: Investigate a dependency or bad-image error

“Specified module could not be found” can mean that Windows cannot find a dependency required by livesnth.dll, not necessarily that livesnth.dll itself is absent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A “not designed to run on Windows,” “not a valid Windows image,” or bad-image message may indicate:

  • A truncated or corrupt DLL
  • An architecture mismatch
  • A damaged dependency
  • A DLL copied from a different release
  • An incomplete legacy installation

The practical repair is still to reinstall the complete parent package. If the error remains:

  1. Confirm whether the requesting executable is 32-bit.
  2. Check that the DLL is in the application’s own installation folder, if the installer places it there.
  3. Review the application’s installation log, if available.
  4. Check Event Viewer for the failing executable.
  5. Test the application in a supported environment or replace it.

Do not try random Visual C++ or DirectX packages as a substitute for the original application. Microsoft’s current Visual C++ redistributables and legacy DirectX runtime address specific runtime libraries, and neither is identified as a supplier of livesnth.dll. Multiple Visual C++ runtime versions can coexist, so do not remove existing packages merely because a DLL guide recommends it.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components only as a secondary check

Because livesnth.dll is not a Windows component, DISM and SFC are unlikely to restore it. They are useful when other Windows files are also failing or when several unrelated applications report corruption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
  4. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the command to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test the original application again.

Success means DISM or SFC reports that repair completed, or that no integrity violations were found. It does not mean Windows has downloaded livesnth.dll.

Running DISM and SFC repeatedly without knowing what changed can waste time while leaving the old application broken. If you prefer a guided scan that shows which system issues need attention, Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual guesswork; its free scan identifies issues, while repair features require the full version. Reinstalling the LiveSynth parent application remains the definitive fix when that program owns the DLL.

Fix 7: Try System Restore after a recent change

Use System Restore when the error began immediately after uninstalling software, installing an update, changing drivers, or running a cleanup utility.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select Next.
  5. Choose a restore point dated before the change.
  6. Select Scan for affected programs, if available.
  7. Review the results.
  8. Select Next > Finish.
  9. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, and installed programs, but it does not normally remove personal files. If the error remains, reinstall the parent application after Windows finishes restoring.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Fix 8: Check drivers only when the evidence points there

A driver update is not a demonstrated source or fix for livesnth.dll. Use Device Manager only if the application also reports an audio-device failure, the sound card stopped working, or the problem began after an audio-driver change.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  4. Right-click the audio device.
  5. Select Properties and check the General and Driver tabs.
  6. If Windows reports a problem, choose Update driver.
  7. Select Search automatically for drivers.
  8. Restart Windows and test the audio host.

For a rollback:

  1. Return to the device’s Properties.
  2. Open the Driver tab.
  3. Select Roll Back Driver, if available.
  4. Restart Windows.

Hunting through driver versions and checking each audio component manually can be time-consuming. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan identifies results, while driver installation features require the full version. It is not a substitute for reinstalling the application that supplied livesnth.dll.

Do not register this DLL with regsvr32

Do not run regsvr32 livesnth.dll by default. Most application runtime and plugin DLLs are loaded directly by their host and do not provide the self-registration entry points required by regsvr32.

regsvr32 is mainly appropriate for registration-aware COM or ActiveX DLLs when the software’s own documentation specifically instructs you to register that file. No reliable evidence establishes that livesnth.dll is such a DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you already tried registration and received an entry-point or module error, undoing that command is not the main repair. Reinstall the parent application.

Avoid standalone DLL download sites

A random DLL download can be:

  • Malware disguised as a familiar filename
  • The wrong architecture
  • The wrong release or version
  • Missing required dependencies
  • Unsigned or tampered
  • Placed in a directory the application does not use

It can also hide the original problem, such as a broken installer, missing dependency, or quarantined application.

Use the original vendor installer, original media, a verified organizational backup, or a complete application recovery instead. Do not use a standalone DLL as the repair method.

When to stop repairing LiveSynth

Stop trying to revive the program when:

  • You cannot establish where the installer came from.
  • Security software repeatedly detects the installation.
  • The host, license service, or plugin format no longer works on the current system.
  • Reinstalling the complete application does not resolve its dependencies.
  • Your projects can be opened or exported with maintained software.
  • You have no legitimate installer or backup.

At that point, identify the old application for project recovery, export any usable audio or MIDI data, and migrate to a maintained synthesizer or sampler. Keeping an obsolete audio package installed solely to satisfy a DLL popup creates more risk and maintenance work than restoring the file is worth.

FAQ

Is livesnth.dll part of Windows 10 or Windows 11?

No. It is associated with the old third-party LiveSynth application and should not be expected in a clean Windows installation.

Is livesnth.dll a Microsoft Visual C++ or DirectX file?

There is no verified evidence that Microsoft Visual C++ or DirectX supplies this DLL. Install those runtimes only when the parent application specifically requires them.

Which program installed livesnth.dll?

The strongest association is LiveSynth or LiveSynth Pro, an old SoundFont and DXi synthesizer. The exact requesting program may be an audio host or legacy package that included the instrument. Check the error dialog, shortcut target, and Event Viewer.

Should I put it in System32?

No. Restore it through the complete application installer. The recurring metadata identifies the file as 32-bit, but copying files between system folders is not a reliable repair.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use regsvr32?

Normally no. Use it only when the original application documentation explicitly says that this DLL is a self-registering COM or ActiveX component.

Why does Windows say the specified module could not be found when the file is present?

Windows may be missing a dependency required by the DLL. Reinstall the complete parent application and inspect the application path and Event Viewer.

What if antivirus deleted it?

Check Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history. Restore only after verifying the application and scanning the legitimate installer or backup. If the software is untrusted or obsolete, remove it instead.

What is the safest final fix?

Identify the calling program, repair or reinstall that complete application from a trustworthy original source, and replace the legacy software if it cannot run reliably on the current Windows installation.
